Good drummers for you to follow would of course be Palmer, and Bill Bruford from Yes, Buddy Rich, many say he's the best of all time, Neil Peart from Rush, John Bonham from Zeppelin, Ginger Baker, just to name a few

Of course Palmer is number one some others you can add Terry Bozzio, Ansley Dunbar, Michael shreves, and of course Bobby Caldwell along with the ones you mentioned especially bill bruford.

They were considered the standard for musicianship that all other bands were measured by back then😮

There's a reason the traditional grip works. Watch Buddy and Gene. Matched grip works too ,but the original grip allows your left stick to get to the floor toms a little easier .But that's just me.

I have used the traditional grip for 60 years, the way I was taught. Guess I'm kind of a dinosaur among modern drummers. That's ok.

THEY GOT ME INTO THE BARS. The Old guy thought me a lot? They would get me to play in the bars in Orange County Calif. Back then laws were different. It was a cool time. I had a blast. You are correct 100 present.So many greats in our times, Music is the way we all connect. You are diffidently aware of Music. Traditional grip actually hampers playing and it is not meant to be used on drumsets, only marching drums

In most respects, but players who do it can make other useful comments on why it can be useful... but yeah, it started with marching tilted drums. You don't play maybe. Then you wouldn't say something like that.

@@morbidmanmusic I've been playing drums for 15+ years. And I cannot name one example where 'traditional' (mind the word) grip has an advantage. It effectively limits your left hand to the right half of your reach. Players who use it must train to overcome this limit and it only puts strain on the left arm, but has no benefits compared to matched grip. It's purely a matter of what you've gotten used to. If you look at the kits of traditional grip players, they rarely put anything important on the left hand side. Great players who use it aren't great because of it, but in spite of it.

If you like this then you'll probably like anything Thomas Lang does. John Bonham's of Led Zeppelin's solo during Moby Dick is a classic, too. And Ginger Baker of Cream has some great solos too. Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, as well 🥁

@@keithwoodcrest I'm 60. I actually remember watching Buddy Rich on TV when I was a kid. Haven't watched any clips of him in a long time. I grew up watching the big musicals like Guys and Dolls, Music Man, and White Christmas etc. The music had a sound different from what you hear today.

Now they were playing fanfare for the common man, and I picked up just as the drum solo was starting and then as you can see after his solo they finished the fanfare for the common man, Which ended with a whole lot more of his Virtuosity

@@Bob-nu3xe pound for pound comparision as far as technique and ability goes Lang has much more skills. In the end it doesn't matter, everything improves Lang is from a new generation which could learn from the older ones. And tastefull playing is personal

Yes, absolutely. Though O still give a slight nod to Bonham, Peart and Moon, I would say Carl Palmer’s place on Mount Rushmore of greatest Rock drummers is very well deserved. Honorable mention to Bill Bruford.

Respectfully, he isn't the best at all. He's average relative to players in jazz, fusion, etc. Expand those horizons. I’ve seen Colosseum live about a dozen times. There were awesome. Jon Hiseman was another massively underrated drummer.

Both of them are as stiff as Al Capone's corpse. I agree that Peart had a much better sense of structure. If you want inventive you'd better step away from rock drummers and listen to Tony Williams or Elvin Jones.

Well I could tell you he was Buddy Rich's favorite drummer. In an interview in modern drummer Buddy Rich said he even went around and saw him in concert with e l p. A guy like Buddy Rich isn't going to do that unless he thinks you're pretty damn special. Buddy Rich is arrogant and not one to give out compliments easily😅

Although I love ELP, I’m willing to bet if you ask Carl Palmer who does he think is awesome, he would probably mention Ginger Baker, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, to name a few. Finally, I admit it’s been a while since I bought an ELP record. “Tarkus” is my favorite, and I think I have “Pictures at an Exhibition.” To give you a picture, I still have CDs. They’re in the storage but, it’s been a while.

Yes. This guy is just a standard rock drummer. This is just a traditional rock style solo I've heard a million times before from a ton of other rock drummers. Joe Q. Public really don't have a clue.

Also, lets cut palmer some slack here, he is 71 with solid technique and feel. He is more rudimentary in his style then say a modern fusion drummer would be, but he was highly influenced by Buddy Rich, and had a traditional approach to drumming but with a twist, the two used to practice together by the way! @@snuppssynthchannel You're entitled to your opinion. It's weird, I'm a rocker at heart, love great grooves and tunes, but I've never been impressed with rock drum solos. Baker, Peart... it didn't matter. they were wooden. They had no variety to their solos. Many had these enormous kits with the double bass, and I just thought they were boring. In comparison, I could listen to Joe Morello on a tiny 4 pc kit and be blown away. Jazz guys like him, Louie Bellson, Papa Joe Jones were artists on the drums. I don't view rock drummers the same.
