Rockstar Eater kicks of his Houston food tour with The Original Ninfa’s On Navigation, which is an iconic Texas restaurant that has some of the best Tex Mex food in the city. Since 1973, Ninfa’s is a pioneer of Tex Mex cuisine in all of Texas. This restaurant popularized the fajitas all over Texas, and since then all over America. I grew up in Houston and have many fond memories of Ninfa's. My career took me to Detroit in the 90s, and I'm now retired in north Michigan. I miss Ninfa's so much, and there are no restaurants like that up here. I make my own tortillas now, and recreate several of Ninfa's dishes. Thanks for sharing!

Born and raised Los Angeles but left to live in San Antonio a couple of years ago and loving it. Certain foods I miss back in Cali that I haven't been able to replace yet. What sets Texas food apart from Cali is the BBQ it's amazing! Blacks, Franklin's, Slab BBQ sandwiches just to name a few are to die for. I love Texas the cost of living is below the national average and Cali is ridiculously high. Overall the people are nicer and way more generous towards each other you can't compare. Have fun on your trip try and venture out to different cities and next time come in the spring or fall it will definitely be more pleasant.

I have been eating at the Ninfa's Restaurant on Navigation since the 1970's. Great food! Anytime I get people from out of town I take them there. ENJOY!!

Tex-Mex food is way better than any California Mex!!! Also by the way, it’s pronounced more like NEEN-fah’s. I’m a native Houstonian that grew up on Ninfa’s, Casa Olé, Chuy’s, and Monterrey House. These are truly Houston institutions that cannot be replicated. They’re even better than Tex-Mex joints in San Antonio in my opinion!!! Mama Ninfa is a LEGEND and basically INVENTED Tex-Mex style Fajitas as we know them today! Also my favorite dish at Ninfa’s is Beef Fajita Tacos Al Carbon with tons of Chilé con Queso, salsa, & guac dumped on top and rolled up in homemade Ninfa’s tortillas!

Been going there since a few months after they opened. Their tortillas are so good. You missed the true fajita experience if you didn't put the meat with the frilled onions in a tortilla. Also, their queso is ridiculously great, their charro and refried beans are great, ... and I don't think I've ever seen anyone put their bacon-wrapped shrimp in a tortilla.

Welcome to Texas! if you'd like a real treat, Corpus Christi has some of the best breakfast tacos in Texas. I'm not sure what your food travel plans are but if you get a chance to make down to the Corpus area, I'd highly suggest visiting a Taqueria Jaliscos. People will line up on in the mornings just for their breakfast tacos. The drive thru can get pretty crazy but they are definable worth it. We moved a year ago and I desperately miss our morning breakfast tacos. It's an experience.

Food doesn't have to be authentic, it only needs to be good. The Mexican food in LA and Vegas is so much better than what you find in Texas and the Midwest. I chalk that up to incompetence and laziness.

@@dickriggles942 when I’m on adventure I don’t want just good. I want authentic awesomeness.. I used to live in LA..They have awesome Tex Mex food.. A lot of great food everywhere. I chalk up to a new world that’s to fast paise and don’t have pride in cooking anymore. ✌️

@@lisaharrison5397 I had a peanut butter, jelly, jalapeno, bacon and cheese that was good, not because it was authentic, but because the ingredients were great and it was prepared well. Nothing has to be authentic to taste good, that's a logical fallacy.

Love me some Ninfa's. I eat at one out on Memorial Drive but I've gormandized at the original in years gone by. The Memorial location has some sucbutt canned green salsa.

Ninfa's is similar to Mi Tierra's in San Antonio...great ambiance. Best fajitas for me is Lupe Tortilla's. Pappasito's has best enchiladas.

Lil Pappasitos has the best beef fajitas. Still go with Ninfas or El Tiempo for the chicken fajitas.

As someone who follows Tex Mex history, the chile gravy on cheese enchiladas has no beef in it. Never has. It just looks like it does because of the roux.

I know I’m super late lol… this is a year old, but I grew up on Momma Ninfas and they have the other sauces that go on there as well. That’s just one type of enchilada they have. Originally opened in 1973. Definitely has authentic and tex-mex . Delicious!!!

I don't think that he understands what Tex Mex restaurants are. I grew up with Mexican food in Texas. There are only a few real Tex Mex dishes. Almost all restaurants in Texas offer Traditional Mexican and Tex Mex dishes. We do not say that we are going out for Tex Mex. We are going out for Mexican food!

Agreed. Historically significant, though. Food was better there back in the 70s and 80s, but it's still good.

those are some of the worse fajitas I’ve ever had in my life, go to Goode Taqueria or Pappasitos instead
