Best Filters for CINEMATIC VIDEO / Cinematography
The quality & standard of lens filters are at an all time high and with such a huge variety out there, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with options. In a constant pursuit to produce more cinematic looking images I’ve tried a ton of different filters so in this video I’m going to share my personal favourites but more important when & where to use them.

Hey I love all your content, I’m super excited and motivated to be better every time I see your work. I wanted to ask, is a VND FILTER BETTER USED IN A MATTBOX STYLE OR A LENS STYLE? I ask because I feel like a get some vignetting effect when I use ND filters like K&F. Which one will give me that constant color and no color change. Thank you again.

The NiSi IR ND + CPL is the first and most expensive filter I use with my BMPCC and I love how it looks. I can't wait to be able to get the snap on filters. I imagine a IR VND and CPL combo would be a budget/upcoming cinematographer's best friend for shooting in the sun.
@landscapegear9336
@landscapegear9336 Жыл бұрын
If you don't mind us chipping in on Jacques' behalf - The CPL will help with skin tones and reflections when shooting in the sun, but if you're shooting into the sun, then a black mist filter is your best friend to soften those highlights and give the footage a soft dreamy feel.

@@landscapegear9336 Yes, I am a fan of shooting in with the CPL IRND. I actually got it from your store a while back.😅 I can imagine stacking the CPL IRND + Black Pro Mist. I imagine I can reduce reflections to taste with CPL and soften the remaining with the Pro mist. I'll be visiting the store soon when my savings are fit enough.

What’s your opinion on using ND filters along with Phantom LUTs? Joel says they give off a color cast, and in my experience, he’s right. I get terrible purples instead of browns. But I’ve seen you praise Phantom LUTs, along with ND filters, so I’m curious if you just grade without a LUT when using ND.

Thanks Eli! I think for a music video a 1/8 Mist is the safest. I won't use a streak filter unless I'm confident that the look will be consistent in all lighting setups so just a 1/8 mist is the winner.

Thank you so much! I think it's a combination of both technique and settings. On a 35mm the Active Steady on the A7sIII works really well, pair it with a subtle stabilise in post (Resolve) and generally the results are amazing.

Great video like always Mr. Jacques. One quick question. When you stack VND and Mist filter. Do you put the mist filter on top of the VND or viceversa. I put the mist filter first and then the ND. But not sure if its the right way. Also if you use a polarizer. what would be the proper order.

Hi Jacques, I appreciate the work you're doing! I would like to ask a favour since Nisi themselves cant give me a straight answer. I would like to know what is the NiSi VND1-5 outer ring full diameter for 77mm filter, that is including knurled ring. Im asking coz i want to use this filter on the Tiltaing Mini matt-box and they state that; "The Mini Matte Box only supports circular filters with an outer diameter of 85mm or smaller." Much appreciate your time.

I end up shooting a lot of video both vertically and horizontally. I'm curious to know if you still get the crappy color change when rotating the filter 90 degrees. I think it's generally unavoidable with VND's since polarized light tends to change color based on angle. Does the NiSi spin freely to allow you to shift the color based on your angle?
@landscapegear9336
@landscapegear9336 Жыл бұрын
If you don't mind us chipping in on Jacques' behalf - The crappy colour you mention is probably a combination of cross-polarization and poor colour performance, which is common in lower-end VNDs that do not have a limited density range. Jacques covers it in-depth in a video he did for our channel. Link in second comment.

@jacques_crafford

Hi. Is it possible to stack the streak and mist filters? Like is one of them front threaded aswell?
@jacques_crafford
@jacques_crafford Жыл бұрын
Yes you can but I wouldn't recommend it, I think it will look messy. Swift is not front threaded so you would need to use a front threaded mist to add the streaks on top.
@landscapegear9336
@landscapegear9336 Жыл бұрын
If you don't mind us chipping in - At this stage streak is only available as a standard filter and not swift, but it is in the development pipeline, so that you can combine it with other filters via the Swift system. As Jacques mentions, you might end up with some very funky results if you combine the two.
