Best Graphic Novel Formats?

I will show examples next to each other and then talk about what my preferred hardcover collected edition formats are. Watch and see if you agree. What are your favorites?

Seeing all those books on the table - gorgeous. This is fun. I have the three Sweet Tooth hardcovers. I prefer the compendium…some sort of swap/trade? I also have a few hardcovers that are OOP that I want to unload…

I only just started getting DC Absolutes about a year ago. Surprisingly, I have both the Marvels Premium Edition and the Bob Layton Artist Select Series. I have two "King Size" Marvel collections I got at Ollie's last year (Thor and Fantastic Four), but the one I really wanted the most (Ditko is... Strange!) sold out from IST just as I was going to order it a few years back.

The Marvel Gallery Editions are just about perfect. You get the over-sized pages, but they aren't as intimidating as a thick omnibus. But considering that I started reading comic-books in 1963, I appreciate the fact that comics are being printed in such quality at any size.

Great video, Larry. I think the biggest book I have is Parker by Darwyn Cooke from IDW. It’s a bit bigger than a DC Absolute. Those Monster size Marvel books are tempting but might be a bit to big for me.

The majority of my collection are the standard comic sized hardcovers and trades, from 2000AD Files, Archives, Masterworks, to Epic Collections. I dont have any mad sized books, a few oversized 2000AD hardbacks that are omni height but wider/depth, superb quality. Absolute of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Dark Horse Nocturnals hardbacks, I'd say around absolute sized. And a couple of magazine sized hardbacks and softcovers from Fantagraphics, Titan, Panini, Rebellion, DC. If I could choose a universal format, the oversized 2000AD hardback & the Deluxe Hardcover (used by DC & Marvel) share my favourite spot, their build, almost identical size, price, and omnibus sized pages without the crazy skyrocketting page counts.

Love the video. The new Treasury are the same size as the Gallery Editions just not hardcover but they feel very robust with the same extra thick pages. The wideness does vary but I have Absolute World's Greatest and a few of the DC Black Label OHCs so can't complain there haha.

NICE. I think Marvel should reprint some of the original Treasury Editions in Gallery HCs....like Captain America's Bicentennial Battles

One format innovation I don't think you mentioned is the recent line of Black Label hardcovers which have a page size the same height as any regular deluxe hc, but are 1.5 inches wider - so, 8.5 x 11. They're gorgeous. The only other comic with that page size that I can find is Frank Santoro's Pittsburgh from New York Review Comics, an indie/experimental work as far from superheroes as it's possible to get.

One that comes close but I just a hair off (maybe 1/16-1/8" each direction) is Alex Ross' Fantastic Four: Full Circle by Abrams Comic Arts/ Marvel Arts. They're so close that I currently have that shelved with Black Label's Harleen. I love the extra wide pages on those books.

@@LarrysLibrary Don't beat yourself up over it! Lol you did a goo job either way. Like you said in the video, it was a lot of work trying to go thru and figure out all of th different sizes you had. One was bound to slip thru the cracks. We appreciate the work that you do man.

The Best Format is the (300 pg or less usually) over-sized Deluxe edition Hardcovers! _________ E.g. _Azarello's_ SPACEMAN, _Geoff Johns_ Superman: SECRET ORIGIN, _Dan Slott's_ ASM: Superior Spiderman (ASM 698-700 & SS 1-5). Plus _Morrison's_ #MustReads FLEX MENTALLO, & his Batmn INCORPORATED (pre New 52 comics). All of which successively used this format. Now the DC ABSOLUTE slip-case editions are okay. The bindings tend to break on the few I opened (HUSH really snapped). But like I said, most are too heavy, just to big. But they're A few like _Wolfman's_ CRISIS on INFINITE Earth's companion piece, maybe _Johns_ GL REBIRTH (i think it is) work pretty well- cause there not 315+ pages.. Anyways, Thanks for the Video!

Great video Larry! Gallery’s are great we need more releases, as you said we all love marvel omnies bit i really love image OHC the build and art on board is just great (prices and paper quality as well)

I hate reg Marvel & DC Omnibi! Hurts your hands to hold, way to heavy & who wants to lean over A table & read.... Not me! Plus the bindings usually tend to snap. @@floorboss Interesting. I don't think I have ever seen (and certainly don't own any) Marvel or DC Omnis that don't have a sewn binding. All of mine are both sewn and glued. Only one that comes to mind that is glue only is the Boys Omnis that I no longer own. Those were GLUED only HC Omnis....but that was by Dynamite

@@LarrysLibrary The Org 2010-12 published _Geoff Johns_ Awesome FLASH run Omnis have only glued binding. This Planetary book (which only uses gravity) is another one that's garbage! This Org first print Batman HUSH (maybe first Absolute ever) has a decent "Lie flat" binding. But the material used is terrible. I also heard the org _Johns_ JSA Omnis binding are only glued. Which I would believe, cause these FLASH omnis are all only Elmers glue bad.. Thus From my perspective, the big ICON books hold up nicely. But I love the Simple Deluxe Edition over-sized Hardbacks. Which relegate my reading to them & comics (an the occasional standard tpb.). An I haven't bought any Omnis in at least 10 or 11 years. But that Dini Batman book, sure is looking like an up-coming purchase. Dini's Hush Trilogy, Detective Riddler & Gotham underworld in general, w/ Don Kramer & Dustin Nyguen art is hard to top!

Thanks for the detail explanation on all the formats. Didn't realize the wide range the industry is doing. I prefer the Epic Collection format. It's more budget friendly and Marvel is cranking them out in decent time. Plus I like to sit on my porch or in bed to read and the bigger formats are just too cumbersome to do that. Wish DC would jump onboard that format too with their 70's and 80's stuff.

One format I've found great is the Panini Comics Italia hardcover editions that translate THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN in Italian. They are slightly taller than oversized hardcovers and slightly shorter than DC's Absolute Editions. Excluding volume 1-4, they put out two books for every year SSOC was published. They're up to 1989's issues now, but I had to stop at 1981 part 2 due to shelf space. The hardcovers are beautifully done, but here in Italy, fans take CONAN very seriously. I wonder where those monster Taschen Silver Age Marvel books would fit in. About the same size as the Marvels Platinum and Avengers Vibranium Editions?

I recently noticed all of my DC Deluxe HCs are almost 1/4" shorter in paper stock width than my Image Deluxes. I only noticed when I stacked them on top of each other one day, that the DCs werent as wide. But NMC Omar always says Image, DC and Marvel OHCs are all "the same width and height". Since im fairly new to collected editions i dont have any omnis or Marvel OHCs to compare to; just Image and DC Deluxes. I guess im wondering if that same material is the same width when DC prints an omni? Not a big deal to me but just thought it was quirky and wondered if anyone else noticed. Was to worried about soundinglile a noob before to ask on Omar's channel lol

That is a good question! I think it comes down to the different printers they use resulting in slightly different trim sizes? Maybe?

@@LarrysLibrary That actually makes a lot of sense now that you mention it. And those Taschen books look absolutely gorgeous, but are so expensive and seem to sell out so fast. The ultimate fomo buy in my opinion. That Spidey or FF one would be my choice if I could afford them.

@@LarrysLibrary oh for sure. Your daughter is right though; if you miss something the fist time, chances are that it'll be reprinted one day. Its just that there's no telling how long that will take or if it'll it'll in the format you actually want the next tim around. And some of that indie stuff seems to never get a reprinted. But otherwise mostly true. Too much money on the table to not do it and we get spoiled because of it lol
