Hi Kevin - thanks for watching - yeah, I have a lot of students who have that same issue of the pinky having a mind of its own. Totally correctable though, it just takes time and patience and doing these exercises every day consistently and really emphasizing that walk up - its amazing how little control at times we have over our own fingers! Start slow and it will improve over time for sure. Be consistent with these exercises daily and u will see progress. Take care and stay tuned for more killer content and lessons - and keep on rocking! -David Taub, Next Level Guitar Inc.

Thanks for this video. I've been playing for over twenty years, went to school for music etc... But I've always had this problem with my pinky and never corrected it. I've always been able to cover it up a bit. But Now as I'm learning some really difficult pieces the problem is really sticking out and I'm finding it impossible to correct after over 20 years. Think it's too late for me or is there hope ha?

This makes all the difference in the world. I taught myself. It can be rewarding, but I've also run into road blocks and really had to learn my g scale all over again. I started with the scale because my fingers were used to it. So it was easier than the 1234. Now i can do it all up and down the neck. It makes chord changes effortless.

Almost 2 decades of bad habits. I'm on my third day of this exercise, finally getting up to some speed. I modified this exercise slightky for myself, I do the walk down the same way as the walk up, without lifting all the fingers. It's a bit harder, but more well rounded overall as an exercise. I also like to punish myself with harder practice for being a slob with my guitar playing all these years. Already noticing the difference, I'll keep going for another 2 months at least.

Hi and thank u for checking out this lesson - most appreciated. Yeah, many players have the same issue for sure - so u r for sure not alone. Hang in there and you will get thru it. I suggest doing these finger exercises every day. They help build that muscle memory among other things as you want to get total control over all your fingers including that stubborn pinky finger. Stay positive and be consistent with these exercises. Maybe some other exercises will help as well. I have lots more finger exercises and pinky isolation exercises you may want to try and add to your practice regimen - Those lessons are on my video instructional website at www.NextLevelGuitar.com - they are in the GUITAR LEAD>>>FINGER & PICKING EXERCISES section. There is a free 3 day site pass on the home page so grab that and then try out a few of those lessons. All total only do 5-10 minutes daily on finger exercises, that is all u need, but do them every day - be consistent and mix them up. And be sure to take a good look around this channel as we have tons of killer lessons and content taught in the same format - lots of fun stuff. This is the video I needed. Been playing guitar for years and at one point I had corrected this problem but then really slacked on practicing for a while and recently asked a friend who plays guitar to look at a video of me playing and give me tips on how I could improve my playing. First thing he says is "your fingers are coming off of the fretboard way too much." So....back to corrective exercises.

Hi, Actually I play bass, and suffer the FPS ("flailing pinky syndrome") your innovative lesson seeks to correct. The online bass course in which I'm enrolled also has helpful techniques, but the approach of moving the first finger to the next string whilst keeping the remaining fingers pinned to the last string till it's their turn to move is a great idea, one I'll be incorporating into my practice routine. Cheers, Fred Jansohn

Excellent with the walk idea. I used a string crossing similar for electric bass for stretching and the improvement was epic, so this appealed to me. And while it is slow going as you say-the payoff is huge on my guitar journey. The alt picking and clarity tips are super and while watching TV this will be my Go To Discipline. I may even try it in triplets when I reach a smooth progress. Thank you for such great commentary while demonstrating!

What a great exercise. There are so many videos on this but this is one of the best. I just started playing a few months ago at 59. Most teaching sites just start you out on notes and chords. Well, if you can't control your fingers what's the point of learning any of that? So I'm just working on fingers and control. Once I get that dialed I'll go back and learn all the other important stuff. In just a short time of working on my fingers, they have improved. This exercise should seal the dealla nd I can move on. Maybe this becomes my new warm up every day. Thanks so much. I have subscribed and emailed you:-) Rock On.

Dude thank you so much for this video, I have been learning guitar by myself for three months since instructors in this area are too costly, so I’ve learned everything off of KZfaq. There’s so many things I don’t think of, and then a video like this pops up and I’m like oh! I’ve been doing that wrong! My fingers are definitely not close to the fretboard while I’m playing and I had no idea why transitions b/t some chords were so difficult and long for me… I can’t believe it didn’t dawn on me! Oh well. Glad I caught it early on thanks to you. Will be trying this.

@@rockongoodpeople Well David...I'm a step ahead of ya lolol, I'm already subscribed! But I have to tell ya that I really like ur channel & your teaching style. Everyone is different & for some their issues are cut & dry but for others such as myself they aren't. I have been playing for 2 years & I'm no where to where I wanna be. Life has happened. Ya know. I learned bad habits from the beginning. And its killing me trying to figure out how to fix them. Even down to my hand positioning. I feel as if I'm even holding the guitar wrong. Its everything seems like. I need a full "fundamental" lesson lol. I have tendonitis & Arthritis in my wrists & stuff due to 20 years of cheerleading in my younger days. (I'm 42 now) I wish I would've learned a whole lot younger than what I did. But I appreciate how u go into depth. And thanks I will def go over to ur site & I plan on watching more of ur videos. Hi David, I've been doing an easier version of this exercise, just the spider-walk with the left hand, no climbing the neck, and no picking. After watching this video, I've now added the picking. Definitely harder picking from the low E string to high E, but this exercise is worth the work. And like you said, go slow and be patient. Thank you, your vids offer great content.

been playing for over 10 years, completely self taught, I can play almost anything except shred solos because of this exact bad habit. Now I have to put in a lot of extra practice to fix this because I've been doing it for years. so if you are just starting I highly recommend getting that pinky in line so your not guy who can shred licks as long as the pinky isn't involved lol, Rock on!

I think you can still "walk" on the way down to the high E string. While holding all the fingers on the low E, you can move only the index to the 1st fret on the A string while keeping the other fingers still on the E string, then the middle finger on the 2nd fret on the A string and so on. I'm obviously finding this super hard. Great stuff!

Hi Sean - it really depends as far as your technique and where you are at as far as playing guitar vs guitar hero. Sometimes if the finger flail is not that bad then it can be corrected quickly. David great video exercise ,like a lot this topic techniques to improve ,I try to do chromatic runs slow with minimum movement ,but when I try to curl my fingers while on the 6 string to move for 5 can't curl enough with out muffle the string or pain on my wrist ,is this to do with the finger tips not hard enough yet or it's just thumb position in general ,thanks for all your teachings
@rockongoodpeople
@rockongoodpeople 5 жыл бұрын
thanks Urbano - really appreciate your kind words and thanks for watching. Its hard to say for sure without seeing you play but it sounds like you may want to try and adjust your thumb position to be a little lower on the back of the guitar neck. This will drop your wrist down a tad, sometimes just a tad is all you need as with the wrist being down further toward the ground that will allow you not to hit and mute the high e-string. May take a little while to find the sweet spot and get used to it but give it a try. Sometimes these tiny little adjustments can make a big difference. Let me know how goes it. Thanks. Great tip. I recently bought a guitar with a 12" radius and jumbo frets, which I'm having difficulty adapting to. In D'yer Maker there's a pinky slide on the high e from the 10th to the 12th fret. What's strange is I can easily do it on smaller radius guitars without jumbo frets. On the new guitar, sometimes it rings, sometimes not. It must have something to do with finger tips and cupped hand. And maybe pinky flail. My posture sucks, since I often practice watching TV, sitting on a sofa. I'm gonna try your exercise. Thanks for giving me things to think about.

This is a good exercise - my pinky flail and straight pinky is an embedded bad so fix this as early as you can! But - you need to practice day after day, slowly and really disciplined keeping your pinky in place and bent. It's hard at first - took me about 6 weeks but it was really really worth it. Suddenly was able to do fast up and down runs without muted pinky and 3rd finger notes. I can't recommend fixing pinky flail enough. It's also worth trying the walk with just the 2nd/3rd/4th, or even just 3rd and 4th. or 2nd and 4th. Helps get the 3rd and 4th working independently of each other.

Thanks, I needed this. I hope it works. My pinky was never real coordinated, and after being under General Anesthesia for 33 hours for Open Heart Surgery, it has been absolutely spastic! It might come down on the string I want it to, and most often it just goes anywhere at all. I have pretty much decided just to use the other 3 and forget even trying to use it. Django did what he did with only 2 fingers, so I guess 3 is sufficient. But I AM going to practice this because I would like to be able to use it. Thanks, again! (edit): I Liked and Subscribed!

Hi Bill and thank u for checking out this lesson and for your kind words - most appreciated. Yeah, its a tough habit to break with that pinky finger but you can do it! Stay consistent with these exercises every day. You can even put a few more of these types of finger exercises and pinky isolation exercises into your practice regimen to help with your pinky finger. I have many of them on my full on video instructional website at www.NextLevelGuitar.com in the Guitar Lead>>>Picking and Finger Exercises section. There is a free 3 day pass on the home page so grab that and check out some of the exercises. And be sure to take a good look around this YT channel as we have tons of killer lessons taught in the same format - lots of fun stuff. Enjoy and stay tuned - lots more killer content and lessons coming soon. Keep up all that hard work on that guitar and please subscribe to the channel. Take care, and rock on! -David Taub, Next Level Guitar Inc. & EGI

Actually you can do this exercise descending. Keep your fingers on the E string as you ascend on the A string one finger at a time.. and so on across all the strings..Really messes with your brain till you get it down..

Anyone have this problem? My pinky has a bit of a slanted angle towards the fret which causes muting the string below it, so doing the spider exercise for example my pinky mutes the next string because my pinky isn’t straight, any advice?
