I’ve got one of Kurt’s Coyotepack hammocks and also had him do a custom ground sheet for my tent. I really like the products he makes. Super cool guy. 🤓

Awesome info on a budget hammock! I think it's great to support and promote the smaller companies that provide more user features, especially if it comes in at a budget price! Great video!

Thanks Dave! It’s a great set up for the price. There seems to be quite a few hammock and backpacking companies popping up in PA. Lol 👍

Awesome detailed video and informative review on a very budget friendly product. I love the support of PA cottage companies. I just received my new red tail from H.M.O over the weekend and I can’t wait to get outside and test it out! Can’t wait to see what new adventures and videos you have in store for 2023, Happy new year!!

Hi Dan I always enjoy your videos. I currently own a HMO Coyote Pack and I am about to purchase the Red Tail. The main reason is that while I really like my Coyote I find it too wide. I have been emailing with Kurt and I am about to pull the trigger. Unfortunately, I don't get out on the trail much but I have a great wooded area behind my home. Take Care

Thanks Warren! I appreciate it. I’m with you. A wide hammock just isn’t for me. In rally love the red tail. Used it quite a bit last year and late the year before when I originally bought it. A few months ago go I bought the West Rim from HMO. It is a net-less Red Tail. I use it for winter/cold weather. Very comfortable.

@@backpackingadventures4813 Dan, I am looking for a budget hammock tarp with doors. I saw 1 by One Wind. Do you have any recommendations or do you have a video on one already?

@@unpavedexplorer338 I don’t have one comparable to the One Wind Price. But the closest one in price but a really high quality tarp with doors is the Journey from Hammock Gear. It is wide and has doors so also good in cold and wind. It’s about $140 though but for the price it’s a great tarp. hammockgear.sjv.io/YgJXNB

Wow, Dan thank you so much for this awesome video. I feel like I now have a lot to live up to lol No pressure, right? I'm glad this lived up to your expectations. One thing I wanted to add is that I just updated the bug nets on these to a combined, MultiMode bug net that combines both the ZipAround and DualZip styles into one.

That’s one of the reasons I use a hammock most of the time. I don’t have to crawl in and out and when it rains I have a huge space that I can walk around in.

I have ordered this hammock. Glad to see you approve. Dan, would you recommend a square tarp (ex 12x12) or a (12x9) for your setup? Pros/cons? Thanks.
@backpackingadventures4813
@backpackingadventures4813 Жыл бұрын
It’s really a matter preference. I prefer a hex tarp. Colder weather I use my 12’x10’4” tarp to provide better coverage from weather and wind. And I have more room to hangout. Summer I use an 11’x8’6” since I’m not worried about the weather as much and it’s lighter. I also like the catenary cut because you can get the sides taut. Not sure if there are any real pros or cons of using a square tarp over another. However, a 12x12 tarp would give you a lot of coverage with no real downsides. Maybe packability and weight would be a difference but not by much. If I could only get one tarp to use and not have multiple for different situations, I would get the bigger one. I had my huge palace tarp before the one I use in the summer because it was expensive and I o not could get one at the time. So I figured the larger would be better because I would use it all year round. And I do for 3 years until I got the smaller one I used this year for summer. Now that it’s cold I’m back to using the palace tarp. So if you want more coverage and don’t mind the little extra weight and a little less packability than the larger one would be better or if you want to be lighter and don’t worry about huge coverage than the smaller.

Would you mind sharing your weights? What sort of weight for a spring/summer trip in PA with temps not going below 50 degrees? I really want to get a 3 season hammock setup but don’t want the extra weight… or expense for ultralight.
@backpackingadventures4813
@backpackingadventures4813 Жыл бұрын
I used to be ultralight, sun 10lbs base weight. Last year I started adding things back in. So this year my base weight ranged between 11-12 lbs base weight depending on whether I used my tent or hammock setup. As far as my hammock setup specifically, I use a dyneema tarp that weighs 10oz. My underquilt for 3 season is the Hammock Gear Premium Phoenix 30 degree and weighs 14oz but that is with an extra oz of down and a special print so it weighs a little more. The top quilt is the Hammock Gear Burrow 40 degree wide version and weighs 14oz. I got the wife so I can use it in my hammock or on the ground. Hammock Gear has economy versions which are still down but just not higher fill power. They are great and aren’t much heavier than the premium at all. They also have non dyneema tarps that are much less expensive. A 40 degree under quilt would work well. I just use the 30.

@@backpackingadventures4813 Thanks! At this point though, I’m thinking a weight penalty is worth the good sleep.
@backpackingadventures4813
@backpackingadventures4813 Жыл бұрын
@@tommaurer996 when researching make sure you compare the weights. If you have a non dyneema 2 person tent now, most likely it won’t be that much heavier if at all. Both setups are pretty comparable. If you then get a dyneema tarp your setup most likely will be lighter.

Dan do you think the red tail only being 58 inches wide is enough for a bigger guy to get a diagonal flat lay. I am 5-10, 245. Would be my first hammock and don’t want to make the mistake and have to buy a different one. I know their coyote pack is 71 wide. Looking for a good budget hammock for first one thanks.
@backpackingadventures4813

That’s a tough one. It comes down to personal preference. Some people that are 6’ are comfortable in a less wide hammock. Some are not. But the rule of thumb is the taller you are the wider the hammock should be. But again it’s personal preference. That being said, if you get a wide hammock and say wouldn’t have needed it, it wouldn’t be any less comfortable so that would probably be the safe bet.
@backpackingadventures4813

Also, here is a link to Dream Hammock. They have a chart that shows you the width you should get based on height. Now this chart is for custom hammocks where you can tell them down to the inch but like I said before the best bet is wider if you are taller. dream-hammock.com/pages/size
