Hendrix in Dallas around 68-69 was my first rock concert. A buddy and I were tooling around Dallas and saw a crowd on a lawn. Turns out they were in line to get Hendrix tickets, so we hung around with them til morning and I bought us two tickets, about all the cash I had. I was so stupid that on concert night I got us there late, missed any opening act and the first song. There were a couple of guys in our seats, but they saw me looking at the ticket and at the seat numbers, then politely gave up the seats and sat on the steps beside them, everybody cool and friendly. Later they passed a roach, my first experiment. One puff from the weak weed back then didn't do anything, but Hendrix was great. He played music I never dreamed was possible - this was before FM radio, in the day of 2 minute songs, bubblegum music, and there were still Pat Boone records on the charts. Hendrix smashed up a guitar, but not before he wrung magic out of it. That started several years of great concerts, anybody who played Dallas or Fort Worth, and a couple of regional music festivals. I always got good seats, once on the front row, and never paid more than about eight bucks for a ticket. The Who, CSN, Stones, Airplane, Moody Blues, Bloodrock, It's a Beautiful Day, regional bands like Black Oak Arkansas, local venues like The Space Palace, and a ton of others. It was *the* time to be a young fan of rock music. I still have all my old vinyl albums and a good turntable, but the stereo went bad from old age, so the tunes first went to my computer, then a tiny mp3 player, now on my phone. When the Eagles came around ticket prices became so high I refused to pay them any more. Having grown up with Hendrix, Doors, and all those from that era it takes someone special to interest me anymore. To me, the best part of this vid was the bass playing. No doubt young Kingfish has got chops, but the bass line reminded me of the great Jack Bruce in Cream, and I loved it.

Those were the days! I grew up outside of D.C., and used a few neighborhood connections to sneak in to see Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. Thought I appreciated them at the time, but if I had a time machine, I would have BEGGED them to teach me better guitar. Sadly, Hendrix died too soon for me to see him, but caught just about everyone else, excluding Zeppelin. (Though I did see Page/Plant in New York. THAT ticket cost me a FORTUNE, but was so worth it.) Rock On my friend!!!

A little over a year ago, my wife and I were lucky enough to be on Joe Bonamassa's Keeping The Blues Alive VI cruise, and Kingfish played this on the pool deck as we were leaving Nassau. It was amazing! Not only were we all rocking on our ship, but people were lining the decks on all the other ships waving and cheering as we passed by on our way out of the harbor.

I'm really impressed. I liked how he did so well playing Hendrix, then went into a Jamaican feel, the through some Bootsy Collins in there towards the end with "I rather be with you" and went right back to Hendrix to finish up.
