#BestHikeInOntario #TopOfTheGiantTrail #SleepingGiantProvincialPark
This has GOT to be the best hike in Ontario. At least for those who enjoy a good challenge! The Top of the Giant Trail in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is a lengthy, rather difficult hike that leads to some of the most spectacular views of Lake Superior. It’s been on my bucket list of hikes for YEARS!
Since COVID-19 has disrupted my international travels, I decided to take advantage of domestic travel and make the 15 hour drive from home to visit this beautiful part of Ontario. We camped for 3 nights, but this hike was definitely the highlight! Roughly 23km there and back, this hike is no easy feat. For those who are comfortable bikers, I would recommend biking the first 8km of this trail - it would drastically reduce your hike time! Oh, & bring bug spray! Don’t attempt this hike without a decent level of fitness… it’s long and extremely steep in the end.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of this epic adventure which shows our epic road trip, camping and a few other exciting moments!

Hi Harold, thanks for this comment! Such beautiful country up that way. Wish I could spend more time there. I now live in BC though, so I can't really complain 😊. Haha, I do like to live dangerously, but I promise I'm very sure footed and never did anything I didn't feel fully comfortable with. Some of the angles make it look like I was a little closer than I actually was.

Hey Justin, thanks for watching! I appreciate the good feedback :) I do not believe you are permitted to camp anywhere near the top. Only in the park's designated camping areas. Nice. I did the Top of the Giant trail a couple of years ago. Walked in at 7:30 am starting from the parking lot trail head of the Kabeyun. Estimated about 26 km round trip hike by foot. Stair case is a challenge & not for the faint of heart. Got back to the parking lot around 2:30 pm stiff legged, sore hips & major blisters on my feet that took a couple weeks to heal. I noticed on my bounce back when I got back to the Top of the Giant trail head there was a large number of bicycles parked from hikers who rode in from the parking lot..............if only I knew. Anyways it was awesome & worthwhile being on top. I have not been in the park since I was a small boy when my family was travelling around Canada.

Biking in through the first 8km would be a total game changer! We knew this was an option, but unfortunately didn't have bikes and due to COVID, the rentals were all closed. We too had very sore hips and joints, but it was SO worth it! I can assure you the park is just as beautiful now as I'm sure it was in your younger years!

Hey! Hmmm. I was camping at Sleeping Giant when I did the hike, so we had a camping/ car permit to be in the park and park at the trail head. I would make sure to check with one of the park offices as I'm not sure about day use permits. As far as tips - BE PREPARED lol. If you are walking the whole thing, it's almost 24km in and out. Long day. If you have bikes, I would recommend biking the first 8km as it shortens the day by a lot. There's a spot where the bikes can be locked up safely. If walking the whole thing, just make sure you have sufficient water, snacks and proper footwear! The final 4ish km are quite steep. Also, begin your hike as early as possible. We went early, and the trail was pretty empty... but on the way back it was packed. Enjoy the views... they are spectacular !!!

I'm not actually sure on that. I mean, it would probably be pretty deserted, so you'd likely have it to yourself. Just be really careful as I'm sure the trail becomes very icy and slipper during the winter months! Might want to wait until the spring or summer 😊
