Before I purchased them I knew they were not waterproof. So I simply used a Beeswax formula called Snow Seal, using a hair dryer melted it into leather and focus on the stitching and now they are 98% waterproof. Takes just a few minutes. I put a little wax in a baggie on long hikes and touch up if it’s really wet. The boots are worth the effort. My feet are dry and ready to more hiking 🥾

Love the Magna Forest ESC boots but searching for the ideal sock to go with them. The Salomon socks I wore very comfortably with my conventional Salomon hiking boots are not ideal. But the boots are incredible, fit like slippers, grip like monkey’s feet so comfortable except the sock works it way down and rucks under my left heel, but only on the left! Breath but are waterproof enough, so no damp feet after a hike unlike in a Gortex boot.

I've used leather boots for decades and my go to is bees wax and a hair dryer. These boots look like the have ventilation near the ankles so I would suggest gaiters to keep the rain out. I'm still exploring this whole "barefoot" thing, as my feet have been in a workboot "bubble" for so long it's difficult to venture out into something new. These do look intriguing. As for the toe use Shoe Goo!

Great video. I use the trackers ESC almost daily for very long walks in snow and at times -10C. So far no problem with cold or wet feet. I wouldn’t trust them in heavy rain, though. Yes, I wish it had a membrane. But my biggest problem is that low opening on the back. When walking I constantly get a little water or dirt into the boot through that low opening, if I can’t seal it by putting my pants over the top part of the boots (which is the case when wearing shorts during summer). Same problem with the Tracker firm ground.

Yes I do suspect snow will be fine but just continuous regular rain got my feet wet after a few hours. I will be using Sno Seal soon when it arrives and this might fix it! I’m happy with mine. I use Renapur to proof them, makes them look like new! Have used them recently in Scotland for 2 weeks in terrible conditions, mud, rain, wet bogs, some snow. They were great. Feet got slightly damp once or twice, but could have been condensation, boots felt dry. Some walks were 25km in one day with 1200m of ascent, no aches or pains in my feet at all. Fantastic to ‘feel the ground’ all the time, but never painful at all for me. Had to be a bit precise when the path was covered in lots of largeish sharp rocks. I do keep catching the toe on steep ground when going uphill, I need to pay attention a bit more to this?

Great comments! This was my first Vivo order and received at end of November. I wear a 10.5US and got a 44. I think it fits fine but don't really have anything to compare it with. Would have liked to have tried a 43 also but it took 20ish days to get to me and I can't try them on locally. Did yours come with a thermal insole? I had seen some others on YT received one but mine did not. In Minnesota, it's not warm enough without a thermal insole. I will probably try wool or sheep insole the rest of winter to see if that helps. Lugs are fantastic! The only other "issue" for me is that when wearing minimalist shoes I prefer to fore/midfoot strike when walking. I'm back to heal striking in these b/c of the height on the ankle. Maybe just an issue for me.

I live in Finland and really struggling to decide which barefoot shoe to get for the winter. Winter lasts long here with -20 to -30 celsius and when it gets warmer there will be slush which is like napalm if it was made from ice cold water. So non-waterproofing is not an option for these conditions. I´m still torn whether this shoe would work since one commenter said that sno seal would work but you said no. Also the seller in vivo shop said that he wears these all winter here with no issues. If I´m going to throw 260 euros on a shoe I need to be sure though so ugh....

In the military we had black leather boots....they were not 'waterproof'....until we polished them with some wax (various types) once we prepped them we ran through mud and water and snow. And for the most part they were great. I suspect theses boots would be the same, prep them and give them a go! (personally I've always found boot that drain and dry fast to be better that 'waterproof.' Because water always seems to find a way in! lol I do agree about the toe guard, all they had to do was lift the front of the sole up an inch or so in the front and that would have worked :)
@CptAngelADVlogs
@CptAngelADVlogs 8 ай бұрын
Yeah those are not waterproof no matter how much you treat them. It's random some times they will be fine and others even a bit of rain will give you wet feet. Those don't dry fast at all. The leather gets soaked and will remain wet for at least a full day. For a universal do everything boot maybe a leather boot with no membrane is best, but I was looking for something that's watertight to use in cold wet weather.

I appreciate you sharing your experience in this video. What to do with them? Treat them with a good wax waterproofing and enjoy the heck out of them. :~) I used Sno-Seal on mine. I've been using mine with feet staying dry in ankle-deep streams & puddles, snow several inches deep both fresh & dry and then slushy & wet. The only time water got in was when snow got in over the back. I pull the elasticized cuff of my rain pants down over the ankles now and no problem. Some gaiters would do the job as well. I will say I'm out for about an hour in those cases, not two or more.
@CptAngelADVlogs
@CptAngelADVlogs Жыл бұрын
I do wanna try different waxes. An hour is not that long I'm pretty sure they can take that right out of the box. Problem is when you're outside in the snow/mud/slush hiking or doing activities for multiple hours. On the 2-3 hour mark they'll start letting humidity in and that might become a problem when you're in the cold.

@@childcrone Yep that's my issue with them. I only use boots when it's cold + rain or snow, I find no point in them otherwise. Extra discomfort for unnecessary protection. They look cool but I prefer function over Indiana Jones roleplaying. I don't need insulation (in fact I find it annoying), just a waterproof membrane to keep things normal. Wool socks and movement take care of the rest. Instead they decided to put a perforated ultra breathable membrane in there as if we're gonna use them to walk on volcanoes or something. Yes stay tuned! Winter is still not here but when the first snow comes I will be doing all kinds of testing.

I've ordered a Magna Forest ESC (same size), but it doesn't fit well, I have a feeling, my feets just slopes in the boot inwards and downwards to the inner edge as if pronates (so my ankle gets hurt). I don't know exactly why, maybe wider, or the low cut style or the sole is thicker. My feet is narrow and low volume. I disagree. 7 month of hard use in rain, snow and rocks. everyday for 7 month. Maybe you can´t do as with hiking boots - but you get so many other benefits. I´ll paste my review. I have had a pair of Forest Trackers ESC since September 2023. Now 7 month later I just love them. Used them EVERYDAY…….Carry a lot when I work. 15 kg of TV camera and 10 kg of tripod. Often 5 km of walking in a workday. No problems. Had some issues with my right knee before. Disappeared - and still the same. Googled a lot before I bought them and didn’t believe everything I read. For me - all the good things were true. The Michelin sole……..I can’t see they’ve been used. Incredible. I have always used heavy leather boots. They fit perfectly on my feet. BUT - the way they hold my feet forces my knee to do things in a wrong angle. What I´ve noticed since I started using Forest Trackers ESC is that I have always had a right foot that went inwards. I have tried to struggle that. Now I just accept it. Now It’s more than before - but I just accept that and feel so comfortable. Nobody is perfect :-) I´ve also been trekking in mountains. Thought I needed heavy boots with a lot of support. No - you just start to walk different. Not slower - just a bit more alert. A very good thing no matter what boots you wear. Next step will be the JUNGLE ESC. These Forest Trackers ESC actually changed my walking life :-) Go for it. Just ordered a second pair not to wear the first out. Lots of regards from a man that doesn’t just buy what other people say is perfect. Jesper Brinck - Denmark PS I use Lundhags Leather Grease very often. NOT Wax. Keep them soft and almost waterproof. Haven’t had wet feet yet - and we have had a lot of rain.

Depends on the shape of your foot, activities, and preferences. This is why there is no "best." If you've worn regular narrow-last shoes your whole life, then the Lowa are definitely top tier boots, but at the very least, the best boot for an individual should start with a shape that, you know, actually fits their foot. I've worn barefoot style shoes for about a decade, and my foot has changed shape, and actually continues to change shape: the forefoot is becoming wider and wider, with toes splaying apart naturally. A regular shoe just doesn't fit comfortably anymore, nevermind the functional loss in a normal shoe. On the other end of the argument is activities and preferences. If I want to climb Mt. Everest, for example, then I'm going to wear actual, purpose-built, plastic boots like every one else, and hope that with the right manufacturer and size, it will be comfortable enough. Can you side-hill edge effectively in barefoot shoes? No. Can you kickstep in deep snow well with barefoot shoes? No. There is and will continue to be a need for hard, non-flexible shoes for specific activities. The important reality is, however, that these shoes do not have to be made with such unanatomical narrow lasts/shapes, heel rise, and giant stack heights. Lowa boots are the perfect example of this. Take everything about them that they do right, and make them proper shape, zero heel rise, and practical stack height. The materials, stiffness, waterproof tech, and everything else is already great. We need more manufacturers to recognize the gap in the market, and capitalize on it. And I think manufacturers like Vivo are starting to get it - making more and more specialized shoes. I am hopeful that with the success of the ESC shoes, they will take the concept further, and make an ESC boot for other activities. Think alpine boot - insulated, goretex membrane, proper mid-calf height, thicker sole, stiffer, designed for snow/ice accessory use (crampons, snowshoes). The barefoot market is growing. Every day there are new entrants. And anyone doing this for more than a few years has already permanently changed their feet for the better, and for better or worse, can't go backwards easily. I see big money potential in premium, specific-sport shoes and boots using high-end tech.

@@resistemptation4 Yes, agreed. I wish Scarpa would get their act together, I literally lost a toenail hiking in a pair of their GTX hiking shoes.

@@resistemptation4Yes. I can do a lot with this boot, but can’t climb hard snow with crampons of steep ice either. I have to then use my conventional hard soled boots, but they are getting too narrow for my feet!!
