The only way that I can get over feeling overwhelmed is to think of my house as somebody else's house. When I think of it as my stuff, I'm totally paralyzed. Honestly, I can't trust anybody else to notice that there's an important tax document in the pile, or a solid gold necklace is at the bottom of the pile on my chest of drawers. What I really need is somebody to move heavy stuff for me. I'm elderly and have chronic fatigue syndrome and bad jounts.

Maybe hire movers for a few hours? But I would certainly trust a Professional Organizer (NAPO members have a code of ethics www.napo.net) with tax paperwork and jewelry - it's something I've handled often! They are typically very detailed workers ...

Honestly I have been thinking about this, but I think most other people are just like me and they also have important tax documents and gold necklaces, so I could trust someone else to help me with my mess. But my problem is I can’t afford help. So when I have to do it myself I think it’s easier to think of it as someone else’s. But then I start getting it in my head that I’m not being paid for it and idk what to do.

Boy, do I know. My mother passed a few months ago, leaving 2 properties. But, the one I’m to receive is the hoarded one she lived in. There is no power or heat and I’ve had the water turned off. We’re going into winter and property taxes are climbing, while I try to tackle this, which can only be on weekends, when there’s light. I’m also aware that there might be valuable items in the house, if I can get to them. But, my first goal is to just get the place inspected. Difficult, too, because the moisture and hoarded items in the basement, have caused mildew to grow. I will be working, with what vacation I have left this year. But, this will be the first time ever, that I’ve wished for warmer weather. This is such a nightmare!

Hey, this is a big step! There are two types of help. One is the mental and emotional support to work through underlying issues to change the behavior and the second is help decluttering and clearing the space. Without the emotional support of the first step, the second step is very difficult. To learn more about HD, this is a good read - amzn.to/3IAzRmI (I work with Dr Tolin on Hoarders and he is amazing! And here is how the clean-up process works - katherine-lawrence.teachable.com/p/tackle-the-hoard Best of luck to you!!

I am currently facing this very thing. The manager of my apartment building is going to evict me today I am sure, due to my house being cluttered up. I am over sixty, with PTSD and major depression that has caused me to not be able to function much. I have always maintained a clean home until now, and I am overwhelmed, mortified, disgusted and angry. I can’t even force myself into cleaning. My therapist says I am a perfectionist and I have it in my mind that it is either perfect or forget it, so I am blocking it. I just know that it needs a major overhaul. Six hundred square feet can hold lots of things I found out. I am going to try your method in the remaining seven hours until my inspection. Hopefully I can make headway!!!! Prayers please.

My husband died at the start of the pandemic and I was sharing a house with my adult sons and the girlfriend of my eldest. They gf and my son decided to get their own place and it left me unable to afford a home in our overpriced market here in Boise, Idaho. We are in an affordable housing crisis. I am disabled and currently living in my parent's dining room. My area is a nightmare boxes, bins, bags, piled up. I am overwhelmed, sad and tired. I cook amd clean for my parents all day. 3 meals a day and appointments, yard work. I hurt so much at the end of the day I literally lay down amd fall asleep in my clothes. I am spiraling down into depression. I don't k now how to climb out. Today I don't feel well bit nobody cares. I can't lay in bed to rest like my body is begging me to do. The minute I do someone comes looking for me to do something. I am so lost without my husband and feel powerless to create boundaries.

My sons home is so awful. He admits it but he finds himself paralyzed to do anything about it. He's 40 years old and is single. He had a maintenance man doing a task outside his home and this man needed to use the bathroom. My son lied and told him his girlfriend was bathing the kids so the bathroom was unavailable. He couldn't let the man see the inside of his house. My son felt awful but he still can't get his house cleaned up. He has mentioned to me countless times that he needs my help and I'm more than willing to help. I've helped him in a previous residence and he's always so grateful and feels so liberated when all is clean. But he admits his life is a circle. I just ache for him. And it's weird because he's an executive and his work ethic is stellar. How can I convince him to let me help him clean up once again.

Perhaps a good sign that he allowed you to help in the past🤔 Sometimes people are more comfortable with Professional Organizers or Professional Cleaning services than family members. It's possible there is a service in his area that could do I one-time clean out (like Steri-Clean), then hire regular maid service to maintain. But there are different strategies depending on the underlying problem. May need to seek mental health services first before a cleaning service is effective. Sorry, it sounds like a real struggle...

Lol When you are on the move rolling stone gathers no moss......but when it stopped, It took away my best point of reference of time passing. since moss grows ever so slowly, by the time I looked around I couldn't find myself anymore just all of the past that I've been running from building up all around me and things that I have found that I was supposed to give to somebody else to help them. I was the one desperately in need of someone to help me and I'm still there, trying to figure out if I can circumvent my own happiness? I don't know? am I really that masochistic? I never thought I was you could never see it clearly in the form of things. Trying to fix it cuz it was not fair for my wife and daughters. One point in my life at 26 years old I condensed all of my Earthly belongings down to fit in my minivan. The HOA ordered my minivan be removed if it gives you an idea of where I am now🤦 Thank you and sorry to psychobabble so publicly, I hope you find yourself in a better scenario as I do myself.😊✌️🖖

@AprilHare but seriously a fresh start I think everybody needs 1 in their life at some point. Regardless if it's the things that we decide to move. Or the identity we need to leave behind sometimes to reinvent ourselves without anybody's idea of who "we are supposed to already be" hanging around, so one can truly change, grow, evolve into your own ideal self. I just took it a little too far and kept changing my avatar I supposed to find out you still got to do the the same work on yourself no matter who you are. For you might find out that don't really hate the person you were. just all the people who loved you around you instead! LOL do not take my advice go to a professional. @@ceeceemoni3458 please don't hate yourself for this. You're not alone. 🤍 I'm not a shopaholic, but every time I move I move into a smaller apt. This time I was extremely sick at the time and have yet to unpack everything - just enough that it's a disaster and I feel like I live in a storage unit. It's easy to hate ourselves for this, but try instead to challenge yourself to tackle one section a day. Maybe even watch some Mari Kondo videos to help. That is what I used when I moved last time and I got rid of nearly 3/4 of my stuff. What didn't sell, I donated and it felt great. She has a book you can download for free and her technique is so helpful. I hope it helps you too.. be kind and gentle with yourself, it's a process and we didn't get here overnight so it's not going to go away overnight, but if we stay persistent and don't let it get us down, I think we can succeed in this. Start by keeping a box of items you know you will never use and can be given as gifts. Another box to sell/donate (what doesn't sell, donate - women's shelters are a great place for this). I know how heavy this all can feel. It weighs us down and keeps us depressed, but it doesn't have to be like this. We need to let go of what is and start focusing on what we want. Mari Kondo has an extremely helpful method to help downsize and once you've done that, the energy will flow and you will feel so much lighter. I'm on this channel getting tips on where to start with my crowded little home because stuff is just everywhere and I don't know where to start. The Konmari method worked great to help me move in here, but now after being so sick and unable to keep up with housework etc, I'm a disorganized mess. You'll be able to skip this step if you just follow Mari's method and carry on with it. I did not due to being so ill. Come on girl, let's do this!

@@ceeceemoni3458 once you get started you will create a momentum and won't want to stop till it is finished. Don't burn yourself out. Schedule in some time to focus on it and get to it. Then, every time you leave a room, Fly Lady (another great organizer) says bring something with you or tidy something that is not in its place. Walk in a room and pick up 10 items that don't belong there. She also advocates to keep our sinks clean. I'm good with the bathroom sink but struggle with the kitchen sink.. it's a process. When I'm looking for advice on cleaning/tidying I find it difficult to find any that are realistic. Most are already spotless homes and they're showing you how to clean something that is already clean... I'm here for the good advice this lady is giving about moving the biggest bulky items first. That is excellent advice and will make a difference to me. All these piles sitting around make it difficult to know where to start. This is the first time I've found her so I'm gonna sub and see what else she has to offer. I think she's gonna be up there with Mari Condo as far as helpful advice goes. 🤞🤞

Not all mountains of "crap" = hoarding. That having been said, these are my comments: Digital photos help me clear space without getting rid of memories (for example: The fronts &/or binder strips of your book covers could be digitally collage & printed for many reasons later, such as onto fabric for a throw pillow or afghan or Tshirt or Tote bag, or to print onto wrapping paper or gift cards or bookmarks, or to use as "wallpaper" on phone or green screen or Facebook or created KZfaq video, as part if a "slide show" functional decoration ... great for sentimental chochkies, pics of kids' favorite books can be saved until they're grown and then turned into personalized items for them, Etc.). I also find that putting valued possessions up for "adoption" to a "good home" also helps me part with them, whether that is someone I know personally &/or someone who will appreciate them as much as I do (or close to it). Because I have ADD though, which through exaggerating many "not helpful" behaviors, I would appreciate a video re ways to panic-clear & panic-clean massive clutter from visible areas (minimum = entryway, living rm, & bathroom) when someone judgy has to be let in with almost zero notice yet while minimizing how much more work disorganized stashing (throwing things in boxes to unpack later ... esp if not labelled +/- dated)! In my case, being a disabled almost 62 y.o. cancer survivor, who over the past 8 yrs years involving divorce & kids flying the nest, and moves that cut my square footage in half 4 times while downsizing ... not enough yet to fit in my current 650 sq feet, am talking about 4 ft of boxes & sorting piles on nearly every horizontal surface that isn't an essential path! I have room in a back room to stack boxes, but get too overwhelmed & distracted to be even marginally presentable within an hour (esp when many surfaces haven't been dusted, &/or swept, &/or wiped down for ... a while). Can you offer at least a 1hr process (& then maybe progressively better approaches by increments of available time for the same (reproduced/staged) starting situation (for comparison)? annnnd, re weighing the cost of replacing items (like fabric, wrapping paper, crafts supplies, hardware, Etc.), choices need to factor in what the cost of the real estate to store it will be (esp if downsizing). Thank you! Rosemarie Bredahl, D.O. (ret) P.S.: The "If you haven't used it in a year" isn't an option, because my family archives, medical records, and tax documents are scattered amongst boxes I haven't used for a year P.P.S.: For me, collaborating with a helper requires that they ask about my approach before replacing it. If I've already tried something that didn't work, not wanting to repeat that can mimic unreasonable resistance vs if the helper can i.d. WHY their suggestion failed during my prior trial, we two can brainstorm a new solution option while keeping the problem "over there" and keeping we two on "team us".

@@KatherineLawrenceCPO it's less about letting go for me and more about where to start tackling first here. I already did the mari kondo method before I moved here, so the downsizing is done, but when I moved in I was very sick and in bed for about 2 years straight. Any time I tried to unpack I would get overwhelmed by lack of space and not knowing where to put things. I'd get exhausted and give up. This happened enough times that it now looks like these boxes threw up their contents around my apt into piles of stuff that don't make sense. I'm not a shopper, but I did grow up poor so I do have a hard time to let go of things that could come in handy or be of use down the road so I don't have to buy it when I need it. I've got somewhat of a plan here but it's so overwhelming for me and I do get drained quickly so can only work at something for so long before I need to lie down and rest. Any advice is welcome! And if you wanna come visit and help me I'll make you tea and cook something good and healthy for you. :) *bribery ensues*

Get a trash bag and remove obvious trash first. Next get a box, fill with stuff but dont sort for now. Just stack boxes outside if possible. Make boxes or bins of sell, donate, toss, and keep. If keep ask why you need to keep it. The reasons to keep will be important like papers and documentation, valuable like jewelry or expensive equipment etc, sentimental like photographs or letters, useful like clothing cleaning supplies kitchen utensils etc. If you have not used it in the last 6 months you probably won't. Let it go. Wish you luck on your recovery. ❤

FINALLY, a properly full house to declutter...

I live with my mum and she has been hoarding since i was a child. My house was never “nice” but it was functional and clean. Now it is an absolute state, impossible to clean and actually makes me unable to use certain rooms in the house (the dust triggers my asthma) my mum is definitely an emotional hoarder which makes even conversations about removing stuff incredibly difficult and often leads to arguments. I have tried to chuck stuff secretly (even my own things) and she refuses and will take stuff out of the bin to bring back in the house and go through. Im now an adult considering how im going to leave my mum when i get my own house, when we cant even invite people over because of how embarrassing it is. Any tips would be highly appreciated ❤

Family members with hoarding behaviors are incredibly difficult to live with because they will choose the "stuff" over their own health and safety and that of other family members. It is sad, but you'll need to protect yourself and set strong boundaries. Sneaking things to the dumpster, attempting to clean-up typically result in fights and may be counterproductive in the short term. I have asthma and moved out of my parents home at 18, they never cleaned and had hoarding behaviors that got worse over time.

I wonder if that is common? I've worked with many folks with hoarding behavior who seem to really enjoy their space that way... but yes, less stuff is easier to manage! I hope you can find that balance.

I have a hauling company take it directly to a donation or refuse center. If you are selling items, and having people come in the house, just give the buyer a heads up that they will need to remove the item from your home (provide information on size,weight, and if they need to carry down steps...)

My father passed away 2 weeks ago in his home. He would not allow us to help him with decluttering. He had hoarding behaviors and now my sister and I have to clean up the mess. Not only is it emotionally taxing on us because of his death (he was found dead inside his bathroom), but we are having to deal with the cats, kitty litter, mold, mildew, insects, dust and toxic smoke from his fireplace. It has been overwhelming. We loved him and I don't mind because now we are actually allowed inside without his yelling or getting mad at us for cleaning his space.

I'm so sorry to hear that! First, think about your deadline like when the house needs to be sold or if you are keeping the property. You have more options the longer your deadline is, but you'll need to consider the carrying cost (taxes, utilities, mortgage), the expense of the clean-out, and the value of items in the home. Then you can decide if you are doing the clean-out on your own (which can take months), hiring a clean-out crew (fast but expensive), or selling it to an investor as is (quick cash with little investment). I highly recommend you get to my course if you are doing the clean out yourself... it's the methods I use working on TV's Hoarders and how we cleanout houses in less than a week - katherine-lawrence.teachable.com/p/tackle-the-hoard

I received a nasty anonymous letter in the mail. I was thinking , you are criticizing me for cleaning up? I am working on things! How can I work on things discreetly? NOT easy to do, I cannot see a way to-especially if I am trying to work quickly or need help. Neighbors threatening to call people etc. It was very paralyzing, confusing-sent me into a worse state and that's still my issue.

I would be honest about your feelings but also put a plan in place to get your own space one day. It's hard for people to change and someone with Hoarding Disorder may get defensive and angry if you try to clean out their space (remember they have a deep attachment to things that can even outweigh their love for family members which makes this a very sad mental illness). Try not to enable their condition and set good boundaries for what you will and won't put up with in your own life. Good luck!

Your judgement could be clouded by the depression (or you just feel too overwhelmed to deal with it). If you can not afford a non-judgemental Professional Organizer to assist, find a trusted friend (someone kind and patient) to advise you on what to keep and what to toss and to remove items from your home.

I would try one of these two options - go through things very quickly and only keep things you absolutely love, like you can feel a flutter in your stomach just holding them AND/OR write out a list of the clothes you absolutely need. like 3 pair of jeans, 7 pairs of socks, 4 dresses etc, then create a capsule wardrobe from the best stuff (you may need to do this anyway since you live in an RV and space is super limited!). Once you've built a great wardrobe be sure to tell your friends not to drop anything off unless you tell them a specific item you are still looking for! Good luck!

Yes! For larger jobs you can hire a junk hauler on a short term basis to help with clutter removal (taking items to storage, donation centers, recycle centers, and so on...) and bringing in a closet install company can assist with building additional storage. Otherwise you can book multiple days with your client over a longer period of time (like meeting weekly for the 6 months) to slowly work through the house. If you get a job that is just too big or the client is on a short deadline, refer the job to another company and they will likely refer jobs back to you that are a better fit. Hope that helps!

I've worked for a few years on our family home's garage. Got rid of a lot of junk, but the biggest challenge is paperwork. My mom literally wants to go through every SINGLE paper to make sure it's not something valuable or something that has personal information...and the sad thing is I don't completely blame her. I just work faster and if it were my paperwork I would look through it but not with all the reminiscencing and sentimentality that my mom puts into it. The other challenge is knick knacks that she doesn't use but wants to keep because she like them. HELP ME PLEASE!
@KatherineLawrenceCPO
@KatherineLawrenceCPO 2 жыл бұрын
Come up with a list of approved shred items like bank statements that are older than 1 year or supporting tax papers that are more than 10 years old. Then see if she will let you sort papers using this plan. If it's not on the list just set it aside for her review. I use this method to sort papers quickly with hoarding clients. For knick knacks - if she wants to keep them, I doubt you will be able to convince her otherwise, but you could use a method called sampling where you downsize a collection by picking a few items that represent the entire collection. I have to do the opposite. If I start on small items it seems doable, the goal is obtainable. It’s easy to throw one thing away when you get up to get a drink or go to the bathroom or to put 2 books away back on a shelf where they are suppose to go. Big items or piles cause me stress and make me feel overwhelmed. But I suppose each hoarder is different 🤷‍♀️(I’m a level 2. Not as severe as the people you help)

I thought no I've been doing something similar with my parents hoarding. They will start whining about the overwhelming task of working on the mess and I will pick one big thing they have agreed to get rid of and get one of them to help me carry it outside. Once I can get them up and moving a few things out they start finding other things to throw out, then we get a big pile going for a special trash pickup on the curb. By then they feel pretty motivated because of hey wow that's a huge pile of trash gone now, there's suddenly room to get to even more junk, etc. We are slowly moving room by room and doing cleaning and renovations this way. It's secretly a more personal mission of mine because I do NOT want to be left inheriting a hoarder house.

You don't get overwhelmed because it's not your stuff and it's not your family members so you can clear it out without any guilt or repercussions. Nobody's going to be coming back at you saying you did that because of something that happened when we were teenagers. When it's your stuff or it's a family member's stuff it's a totally different animal😊 I am dealing with my own hoarding situation every time I try and sort through a box or a pile the situation gets worse not better. Every time I try and sort through the pile the pile seems to grow instead of diminished. If I open a box of start taking things out now it's spread out all over the place and even though I want to save one or two items I have more items now disorganized and spread around that need to go somewhere else. I am proceeding with getting them sent to somewhere else but the process is exhausting. And frustrating because everytime I sort through a new box now things are disorganized instead of neatly stacked and packed.

@Katherine Lawrence I haven't had a chance to watch a bunch of your other videos. I only saw the one and at the moment I made my reply I was up to my ass in alligators. But the crisis has passed and there is more room in my house now after maybe 15 to 20 people have been helping me for two weeks. It's kind of an involved story but I prayed for a long time to get help and when it arrived it was not surgical it was more like Earth moving equipment. There were some casualties but I survived with my sanity. Now I just need to keep the momentum and continue to clean out and reclaim my space without refilling it. The reason we refill it or fill it in the first place is obviously more important than the stuff. But the stuff is what is in front of us everyday. blocking our path and keeping us from moving forward.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to control her impulses. I myself struggle as the child of hoarders (and having helped other family members too), all you can control is your own behavior. So you could say "I can not help you if you do not trust me to pack boxes for you, you will have to do it yourself or find someone else to move these things". It's harsh, but you'll need to decide how much time you can dedicate to someone else's stuff.

Wow, "save the world and then destroying our lives instead" is really at the heart of it. Put yourself and your family first! I've heard that a lot from working with Dr. Tolin on the Hoarder's TV show. It's hard, but so true!

@KatherineLawrenceCPO I was a very late child. My mother 1933 born in South Italy during World War II. My father 1935 Brooklyn New York right in the middle of the Great Depression. So save, use everything sparingly, I don't disagree with most of the values but sometimes to a fault and eventually to a detriment. Think they should not have been so cheap when it came to our health and going to a psychiatrist would have helped with all the trauma we went through. I was the youngest of 4 boys and a single female my twin sister. Unfortunately she passed away at 4 months old. it was assumed that nothing affected me cuz I was too young to remember, isn't that a bargain! Just seemed like I was not allowed to mourn before anybody else. 7 years later my eldest brother Jack passed away at 18 years old the day we move to Louisiana from New Jersey. My father had a heart attack that same year along with losing three of my grandparents that year. The remaining grandparents with her Alzheimer's didn't remember who we were anyways her last seven years. Those are some of the trauma highlights of my youth I'll stop there LOL a big old mess that I had to keep a poker face without knowing that I was doing it. In this sense, ADHD can be your friend not paying attention for too long is a asset when trying to ignore yourself. Can't be sad for too long cuz she can't pay attention for that long

Have a part time job helping this lady clean hoarded spaces.Was helping clean a bedroom it wasn't that bad actually, It's just that I feel a little sick from cleaning .I wore a disposable mask .There was no animals in the house or didn't come across any bugs .Just alot of dust and trash no food trash just a lot of papers clothing and stuff like that . Why I'm I feeling sick when it isn't too too bad and I wore a disposable mask?

Could be time to upgrade to a respirator for more protection. I'm wearing one a lot now because I'm in and out of a moldy basement. I have certainly had bad allergy attacks just from dust unfortunately ☹️

It's time to ask for help and call in some favors! Ask a non-judgmental friend, believe it or not, people love to help others clean. You can find an organizer at www.napo.net but basic cleaning services could help you with some of the overwhelm too

My family hoards how do I clean when they don’t wanna get rid of stuff ?
@KatherineLawrenceCPO

This is a major challenge! Something that I have found helpful is to set boundaries or rules for different areas like common spaces. For example, each family member can keep their collections in certain spaces, but the kitchen has to be free of clutter. Make space for each family member to have autonomous space (like bedrooms, play rooms, home office) but have a zero tolerance for clutter in shared spaces. It's like a "you don't have to throw it out, but it can't stay here" policy. If the mess gets bad enough that it leads to health issues (pests, mold, trip hazards) have a plan ahead of time that items creating this problem will be removed from the home. It's harsh but really important to set limits or clutter can become dangerous.

Ok, but that shelf: to get rid of it do you first have to figure out what to do with everything in it? Do you just quickly pull everything off and dump it on the floor and drag the empty shelf out of the room?
@KatherineLawrenceCPO
@KatherineLawrenceCPO 6 ай бұрын
Yep, I'm constantly emptying drawers, cabinets, shelves... But you can not get too caught up in sorting all the small items, so I try to figure out if there is a quick solution to the stuff, like what I can donate/toss right away. Basically if the decisions can be made in less than 30 mins, go ahead and do them now. If the decisions will take longer, yes, pack things in boxes and bags and label "to sort".

I actually just cleared a massive desk system for a client this week and used banker boxes for the keep/sort later items because they are easy to stack - amzn.to/47KwWTH so we reduced the footprint of the stuff by 80%

The problem is for those with hoarding disorder konMaris spark joy method reinforces a hoarders desire to hold on to things because it can’t be defined. This isn’t great for them.

Yes, HD and I would say depression too can really skew one's perception of their emotional attachment to things. Sometimes these traditional organizing methods, when tried and failed, can highlight some deeper emotional concerns that need to be addressed first. It's all a journey! Decluttering has the power to bring a lot of deeper issues to the surface and can be part of growth and healing ❤️

I've had those calls... a week before a pending eviction, but unfortunately there are not many choices at that point and a junk-removal company will get called in to clear the home. Professional organizing works best over many months as we sort and support clients towards behavior changes...

My local council has its own set of cleaners, not sure if they also work independently or not....which leads me to their, seriously unfortunate title! Blitz Clean! My son played American Football for 10 years, also Blitz is a term used in war/s, if you tried to BLITZ clean in my flat, I'd go into my kitchen & come out of the kitchen with my rolling pin wafting it around violently as I kick you out of my HOME...I've mental health issues, trying to attack my home like it's a take over won't help me to heal, but I'd poss people please and agree to chucking stuff out just to, shut you up! And then later probably like how my son has responded, suffers paranoia and accusing people of stealing from him, cos he can't remember what he said yes and no to!! Nahhh, I'd rather check on gumtree & as I'm paying by the hour, I could handle 3 hours max...that's the best deal for my issues. I just watch these video's to 'jiggle me along', so I do as much decluttering without freaking myself out, or regretting it later! Thanks!

You could label and bag things on your own and only call in a hauling/cleaning service to remove items you have already decided on. Sometimes a cleaning service may seem like they are pushing too hard ... but also think of your safety! People get really upset when they see others living in cluttered homes and sometimes that comes across as judgmental or aggressive... 😢
