I totally agree. I want to buy some great sounding tower speakers, ones with great tweeter clarity that makes drum cymbals sound real, but with so many makes and brands, how in hell do we even get a chance to audition them before buying. Granted there is the option of shipping home then if not satisfied ship them back, but that is too much trouble, not to mention costly on shipping expenses. I too miss those sound showrooms of yesteryear.

30 year Yamaha user here. I have their baby grand, stage keyboard and a handful of powered monitors and home theatre receivers. I’ve always liked their build quality and they use high quality DACs. My only complaint is their newer receivers dropped inputs and outputs for legacy devices like my old retro consoles that use component video.

I never wanna see an Onkyo again in my life! Had the most boring December holidays because that thing decided to die on me just before Christmas, and most repair shops are closed by then. After two hours of diagnostics, the technician couldn’t even figure out what’s wrong with the unit. Now I have to wait until mid-Jan to know what’s the status thereof. I just want it gone period!😖

@@alemanivan3 I have an Atmos 5.1.2 setup, with 2 ceiling speakers, and yeah, I noticed an improvement in the sound quality. The Denon was already really good, but the newer Onkyo just sounded a bit better. Biggest reason I upgraded was for the current gen consoles, XSX and PS5. I got a new LG G2 OLED recently, and though the PS5 worked well with eARC, I kept getting a very noticeable audio delay with the XSX….worst with Dolby Atmos, but even with standard 5.1 output. I could have gone back to plug-in the XSX right into the Denon, but then I wouldn’t have the HDMI 2.1 features (120Hz, VRR). The Onkyo handles all that like a champ, and it sounds fantastic to boot.

@@alemanivan3 yes, but I couldn’t get the XSX to NOT have an audio delay when using eARC, whereas the PS5 worked fine with it. Was very frustrating. I also wanted to be able to add 2 more ATMOS height speakers, and I can do that with the Onkyo.

Arcam AV Receivers display is a Scratch magnet wipe dust of it and leaves scratches cheap plastic There is a light that shines through the power on button that is not good for the price, plus Arcam AV Receiver amps are under powered need to add external amps

@@MusicMovies67 I think I will manage with the display, I use to take good care of my things. If its underpowered, well it depend which speakers you are using and how loud you want to play. I don't need 7 x 400 watt when I watch movies. Only the remote is a bit tricky to turn off the receiver.

Thanks for sharing- we felt like you needed something better than Audyssey to be top rated. We did not think there were any plans to offer Dirac on the 8015? And you really have to hear the Class G power amps in the Arcam to fully understand how great it does sound.

An Onkyo 686 died on me out of the blue! It kept going to “protection mode” and wouldn’t power up for whatever reason. Took it to an approved technician, and after two hours of diagnostics, he called and told me that he can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong with the unit, but promised to look again in 2nd week of January 2023. I want nothing to do with that thing!😖 As soon as it gets fixed, I want it gone! Am looking at the Audiolab 8300XP and/ Anthem MRX540.

@@Turtleback8024 I have the same receive and same problem. I smelled smoke with mine before it finally decided to not turn on. Let me know what's wrong with yours and maybe I'll take this paper weight out of the closet and try to fix it before throwing it in the trash where it belongs. Never buy and Onkyo!

@@letsgetdoing The Technician called me last week and told me that he still couldn't figure out what the fault was, but after he resoldered all the connection points the unit came back to life. I told him to sell it on my behalf as I can't trust it. I'm gonna get myself an Anthem MRX540. I'm done with Onkyo.

@@Turtleback8024 90% of Onkyo receiver repairs I've seen have been fixed due to fault resistors. Mine failed conveniently a couple of months after warranty was up. I'm definitely going Yamaha next time.

Got a 7100 before the price hike in the fall. RZ50 was really hard to find, and I didn't feel like I really needed external amps. Aside from Dirac loosing the network connection during calibrations it's great!.

100 there is no doubt the Onkyo 7100 is the winner under 1250 by a mile. It is not even close.

We would respectfully disagree. Some of those upper end ESS DAC's sound very warm, especially the top of the line ones. While yes, R2R DAC's have some advantages, implementing them for multi channel would be a nightmare.

We would agree many vintage receivers still sound good for two channel only but they do not have the immersive audio functions these do. If really just want good two channel audio then look at the newest integrated amps. Most of them will sound far superior to the vintage gear. Thank for watching

@@AudioAdviceam looking for a replacement unit for my now dead Onkyo TX-NR686. The Anthem MRX5/740 is in my radar, but I have read so many complaints about the noisy fan on these Receivers it makes me doubtful.🙆🏻‍♂️ Most people are said to have returned their units due to the fan noise. Some suggest that you keep it in a separate room.🤷🏻‍♂️

@@AudioAdvice I think it’s not my device fault since there’s a lot of people with the same issue and returning the device back. It’s not very loud but you can hear the fan in a quiet living room. I think it depends of the room conditions where you have the Anthem but on a device of these price it’s strange that a fan can fill it’s presence. Anyway it’s a fantastic machine and I think that I can live with the fan since the sound and performance is so addictive.

@@Turtleback8024 in a separate or big room you shouldn’t notice fan noise. Between the 540/740.. go for the 740 for sure. You get more channels and power. The Anthem is a fantastic machine!

@dubious6718 well, have you listened to some of top end soundbars these days? 2ch listening is great for music.

@@bbokdoong high-end soundbars has those bouncy bouncy reflective speakers. Which is basically a somewhat delayed weakened virtual sound! That time delay is likely to throw the sound out. Besides when it comes to 2 channel stereo music, soundbars are unable to compete with stereo speakers. Nevermind the imaging one will never be able to experience stereo separation with a soundbar and if you know a little bit about listening to music speaker placement (+ toeing) is absolutely essential to experience a great sound. But mind you what I will say in favour of soundbars. It's dialogue intelligibility are far more accessible with a average soundbar then with an average budget - mid price AVR, thats unless one is prepared to buy an expensive centre channel with an they're preferably good dynamic range AVR. Otherwise one will be reaching for the remote control every time the Dynamics change. So basically it comes down to budget and Listening habits! If you want it mainly for movies then go with a soundbar but if you like your music more then your movies I would strongly advise going with a AVR. But if need be persevere carry on saving and start with something solid! Otherwise you'll be another one of those persons reaching for the remote control all the time.

Actually not, when you are a manufacturer every penny in parts cost makes a big difference. And many receivers on the market use sub $6 DACs.

You obviously have never heard one and they are all HDMI 2.1 now. And in something very few receiver manufacturers have ever done, if you have an older one without the 8K boards you can upgrade for a fee to the new ones.

@Audio Advice I was reading Anthems own description of its products specifications of the MRX 740 on their website two days ago and it stated that hdmi 2.1 is not available at this time. I would suggest that you look into it for youself.
