Hi dear, I've tried olive oil in my clay before, but it changes the color of the clay way too much for my personal taste, it kinda turns it yellowish. Honestly, vegetable oil doesn't change much the color and it's more affordable. I recommend you vegetable oil. God bless you.

Yes, it probably absorbs more. If I'm not mistaken, I tried the glycerin a couple of times and it started generating heat when I added it. So I stopped using it, but it was so long ago, I'm starting to doubt myself, but I know I started using vegetable oil for a specific reason...

Hi, by chalk I mean "calcium carbonate" It's not plaster of Paris. "Plaster of Paris" hardens once it's mixed with water, even if it's a small quantity of water the plaster of Paris will start its hardening process super fast just like cement. Calcium carbonate doesn't harden once mixed with water it just forms a firm dough that will only start to harden as it gets exposed to air. More than cold porcelain this clay resembles stone powder clay like "La doll, Jovi, and Dass types of air dry clay. Yes, it's solid, once it dries it turns really hard, it air dries but you can bake it in an oven below 100 degrees.

yes, it all depends on the weather as well. Try to spread the clay as thin as possible to speed up the evaporation process (spread the clay let it rest for 30 min and repeat the process), once it gets thicker it's time to knead until it's firm. You´re on the right way, it's all about time and patience...

I've just today made this and I used a microwave on defrost 10 second bursts to get rid of moisture. I tried both chalk and marble powder trials and the marble looks fav so far. I'm leaving it in a bag until tomorrow now to see the differences between the two. I'm far too impatient to wait 3 days haha.

The mixer will definitely work, but still, you're gonna need to let it rest and come back the times needed as it dries and gets thicker. Yes, when I say chalk powder it's "Calcium carbonate". Thank you for commenting. Blessings

Hi Kyla, sorry for the delay, well I don't know for sure if you can use gym powder, but "IF I were you", I would definitely try it because it seems the same... But if you want to go the safe path buy limestone powder, I understand that's what calcium carbonate is called in most places. But make sure that it is the one that can be added to paints, the one that is used in different crafts so this way you'll be sure that it is the right one, because there are many derivatives of calcium carbonate, some of which are supplements to improve digestion. The ones that are used for intake are usually on the expensive side so it would help if you look at the price and yeah the ones used in paint and other crafts like lippan art mural art are sold with the purpose of the chalk powder mentioned hope that helps

@@kyla8898 Pure Calcium Carbonate is not toxic or anything, it's safe to use it with bare hands. Like Melitaart said it is even used as a food supplement. I accidentally once bought the supplement CC and the texture is just different, it's more like salt (and sometimes they also put vitamins etc in it). The CC for art project is finely ground, like flour. 🙂

Well... I don't recommend talcum, just because of the asbestos scandal... The wall filler has many components that will make your clay weaker, that's the reason why I don't use it anymore. So I tried the safest option which is chalk, "straight chalk". Chalk has calcium carbonate in its components, but I don't know if it'll work the same... Straight chalk is safest...

Hi, well you have to seal your work before starting painting, otherwise if you water-down your paint (acrylics, watercolors) it will reactivate the clay... Hi, you can't use plaster of Paris because it will start to harden right away.

I use powder sheetrock mud that's pretty much what she is using. I think they call it chalk where she is from. You can get it at a home Depot or Lowe's and I think 🤔 Walmart comes in a white bag it's a powder usually you just add water. But in this recipe it's glue instead. Hope that helps..

I mean, sure you can use regular white glue, but wood glue makes it really strong, hard to break... I know wood glue it's way much expensive but it really enhances the clay properties such as elasticity and hardness.

Sorry for the delay. PVA wood glue (Polyvinyl acetate, wood glue), also known as Elmer's glue in the USA, needs to dry between 1-5 hours, Other glue will work, but wood glue makes the clay stronger when it dries.

Hi, you mean the paper, right? It's not necessary to blend it actually, but if you don't, you'll need to tear the paper over and over manually and once you took the water out of it you'll need to steer energetically the paper pulp with the glue until it's fully integrated, it will end up looking the same as with the blender but it will take you a lot more effort...

When I'm working with flat projects like "trays", I notice that things shrink around 2 millimeters... But when I'm sculpting I just don't notice anything, it must be because of the layering process.

Yes it's comepletly different, chalk powder is use as an additive with regular paints to make them thicker etc. Chalk dosen't get hard with water it's frail needs some other additives to get some level of hardness...

I don't use organic "powders" I mean flour or corn starch, because over time it develops mold. And when comes to other fine powders out there be aware they may contain asbestos, like "Talcum". Chalk it's the safest choice. It's easy to find at any hardware store...

It can take you up to 3 days if it's to sticky let it rest in a bucket and stir the dough every once in a while. The secret for this clay is making the clay loose its moisture... if you add more chalk its texture will become rough and less flexible anf if you add more oil it will become weak...

If you don't have much time for kneeding... let it rest for a full week in a bucket, but make sure to stir it every once in a while you don't want the surface to dry hard.

Hi, try marble powder or "HIDRATED MAGNESIUM SILICATE" which is talcum powder, (but not baby powder, which will turn elastic) make sure is ASBESTOS FREE!!! Try any fine powder but plaster of Paris, which will harden immediately. Ask any hardware store for paint additives, and ask for powders that can work with paint, you know that increases paint performance. Honestly, an additive that works fine it's industrial talcum powder, but I'm afraid to recommend it because of the asbestos scandal, but maybe you can find one that is asbestos-free, otherwise, go safe and try marble powder. Ahh, ok en México a la tiza de pizarra se la conoce como "yeso". Hoy en día las tizas de pizarra son elaboradas con yeso (sulfato de calcio) pero antes eran comúnmente elaboradas con carbonato de calcio, eso dice la wiki. Bien recuerda que lo que necesitamos es CARBONATO DE CALCIO no "yeso"(sulfato de calcio) ni yeso de parís, esos fraguan (endurecen). Bendiciones.

That's weird it shouldn't harden that fast... It's likely that the "chalk powder" that you used contained or was plaster powder or "gypsum powder" because chalk powder doesn't harden quickly at all... Believe me, I'm pretty sure you used something else instead of "chalk powder".

@Michelle white Yes, I've done it before as well, same technique you are talking about, but you need to take the shrinking process into consideration. I'll recommend you thinner down your clay with more glue instead of water. If you are following this recipe you'll see that the first stage of this clay is pretty similar to the consistency that you're trying to achieve, just add a bit more of glue.

@@Melitaart hi my sculpture paste that I make has cellulose fibre powder and fibreglass concrete fibres to strengthen it I buy 3mm length fine fibreglass the cellulose then I add 2 tbls of cellulose to 1 fibreglass blitze in a blender to make the fibreglass shorter. My sculpture is 3d sculpture flowers. I use a plaster called acryl deco finish and eyeball the fibre mix then add marble powder to thicken it to a consistency where the mixture in places comes off the pallet knife. When I asked if this was like ladoll clay I've been adding a little bit of premier stone clay to my mixture aswell as it gives height to my petals and they don't break. This premier clay is expensive so I'm looking to make it myself. Thanks for sharing this because it looks exactly the same as the premier to me.

Not really...umm, try to look for it in art supplies stores, if you can't find it, then look in hardware stores.

I am going to try food grade diatomaceous earth. I have read studies and patent articles that describe its use in concrete mixtures etc. It increases the strength, and decreases the porosity allegedly. If you look into it, DE is a type of calcium carbonate with silica. The food grade version is chiefly calcium carbonate sources from diatoms. They remove much of the silica to make it less toxic, and usable as an anti-caking, desiccant, antimicrobial, pesticide, etc. safe for use around animals & humans. The only issue I can see is that it may require more or less water due to the hydrophobic properties. I feel like it is both a binding agent, drying agent, and that it would double as a type of preservative. I guess I’ll find out 🤪

I know... It's not easy... Try to let it dry in a larger container, and let it rest for a while... Then try to knead it again... I've tried a lot of recipes and so far this has been the best option for me. Believe me, it is worth it.
