Love your channel. How does the smsl AO200 mkii compare to the ds200? I just got mine setup today and it blows away my Denon 3700H for stereo music. I hear it sounds top notch with the SU-1 DAC, but I haven’t tried it out with that yet. I had some RSL CG25s laying around that I didn’t like, but with this little device they finally sound good (they sounded muddy on my AV receiver but came to life and sound great with the AO200 mkii). So far I’m playing music over Bluetooth, which I know isn’t the best but honestly sounds far better than my old fluance ai60s (powered speakers).

One evening in 1976 I will always remember fondly because that's when I visited Crazy Eddie in Syosset, LI and came home with 40 wpc of Marantz Technics and Cerwin Vega. As with so many, 2020 got me back to revisiting stereo and by good luck Mr Randall was there to inform about inexpensive stand-alone DACs, coaxial RCAs, and phono pre-amps. Who knew what a huge difference those small items make? I didn't. Cheapaudioman hooked me with his humor but turned out he's a world's greatest teacher! Many thanks.

Totally agree with the Wiim 👍 Can’t get much more for the money. I use my Wiim Pro with a Soekris DAC1321 R2R dac…great sound, easy to use for this combo.

Thanks for your many good videos. I'd like to see some on 1) a matrix/mixer for various speaker combos, so we might switch to and from various little amps. We have different rooms, and uses in the same room, EG Keyboards Synths, Video (youtube), and Streaming audio. These are so cheap I dedicate, because it's less disruptive. 2) Pre-amp to amp relations, and options. Seems like many of these little things can play either role. Actually playing music is much healthier than passive listening, and the gear is equally cheap. You might encourage some active noise making! No need to go way deep. Thanks again, you have been a great help and very entertaining.

I'm looking to buy my first DAC and am looking hard at the Geshelli, but I'm not ready to spend $600+ for a DAC. My question to Randy ( @cheapaudioman )or anyone with experience on the J2 socketed is: Should I get the JNOG2 with a AK4493 and one Sparkos Opamp (RCA since I don't use XLR) at $339, or pay for the AK4499 now and add the Sparkos later? ($430 and a reach!) Where is the Geshelli magic coming from, the upgrade from 4493 to 4499 or the Sparkos Opamps? How does a AK4493 with Sparkos compare?

Help please! I am new to this stuff. I have purchased Rotel A11 Tribute amp and Wiim Pro plus and Elac uni ref speakers now I am thinking of CD player? or DAC and cheap CD transport. Obviously if I go DAC it should be better than the DAC in the Wiim and then I guess I can send the digital signal from the Wiim to the DAC and onto amp? is that correct. Now looking at the Geshelli ...I am a bit lost . How do I wire it up and which options do I need? Thanks

I wonder whether you can help me - I have an LG tv with optical output and a Sony 4k blu ray player with a coaxical output. The 4k player's Coax output is going into a rega isis Dac with great results. The LG tv however optical output is working but the rega isis dac will not accept the optical signal. Is there another way or device that can take the optical signal from the tv and pass it onto the dac?

Do you recommend that I use a DAC in between my Bluesound Node and anyone of my vintage receivers: Sansui G5700, Pioneer SX-789, Yamaha CR 840? Am I missing out by going directing into one of these?

I use vintage gear exclusively, Sansui. And have played around with DACs, I sold my Node and went with the WiiM Pro. I find the DAC in the WiiM comparable to the Node offerings. And then with the WiiM's built in 10 band EQ, the Node stood no chance and was quickly sold. If you are looking at a stand alone DAC, I would suggest picking up the WiiM Pro Plus vs a separate DAC. The EQ in the WiiM software will do so much more for the sound than any stand alone DAC will ever do with our vintage gear. And I did try the SU-1, as it was cheap, and all of the hype, I bought one just to see... It sounded like a wet blanket was thrown over my Sansui 4000. It was terrible, the WiiM Pro internal DAC was so much better. Just add the $69 ifi2 5v power supply to the WiiM Pro or Pro Plus and you will have a very nice streaming DAC to use with your vintage gear. All of the hype regarding the WiiM products is true.

Hi everyone, looking for opinions. I have a WiiM mini as a source to my Arcam/B&W system and even with HD source files from Amazon Music, my cd player still sounds considerably better. I suspect the the WiiM mini onboard dac is the weak link. Am I better off getting a SMSL SU1 or selling the WiiM Mini and Getting a WiiM Pro2? Or are these too incremental improvements to be worth it and I should spend more $$ for something else?

Ok. I'm a bit confused lol. I'm buying a new setup based on your recommendations. I currently have early 90s era pioneer 2 chanel amp, tape deck, a dvd player (cds) and a orbit turbtable. The speakers are 90s era Bostons Accoustic towers (I'll never get rid of, sound amazing). Im buying an emotiva preamp, amp, and most likely a audiolab cd transport. I also do ALOT of hd Streaming on amazon HD with a cheap Imii bo6pro+ (also sounds great, yet Bluetooth). I want a good network streamer to replace that........ The Wiim is the best route to go over the eversolo?? Is the dac on the emotiva good enough or should i get a Gershelli dac and forget about the eversolo?

So you could get the Eversolo and be done. It will have a better DAC then the Emotiva unless you get the xda 3

But the xda 3 doesn’t have a streamer. So get the dmpa6 if you want to be one and done. If you want the better sound quality a J2 will sound better but be more expensive in the long run.

Hi randy with the smsl su1 how do you get power when you are using the optical input if you are connecting it to the USB from your computer when the computer is off ?

You can use the power adapter/charger from your smartphone ---> USB-c / 5V!

@@jimlyall8624 then you would use the 5V adapter INSTEAD of the usb of the computer. Or wake your computer. Or use a powerpack. You need 5V to power it either way. So... since you repeated your question I guess you want to have both the optical connected to a source and at the same time have it connected to the computer via usb? In that case you would have to wake the computer to power it even if you're using opt or coax. Or unplug it ad connect a 5V usb adapter/powerbank. No way around that. Select optical as source and you're good to go.

@@meddlepfYeah had one, had to be refurbished for many €€ with new laser, motor and such but still gave problems afterwards. I had a Onkyo Integra that sounded awesome but had many mechanical problems. Also an expensive top of the line receiver from that brand and it crapped completely out on me. Never Onkyo/Integra ever more for me. I need a strong and easy to repair tank of a player with digital out.

Been running the new Geshelli with Sparkos, power supply upgrades etc, for the a couple of weeks now - it's playing music in a full blown reference system - everything Randy has expressed in this video along with his other videos are right on the mark - - the sound stage is to die for, the bass is amazing - I also notice more clarity in detail - I have no urge to go back to my refence ATC DAC, which yes, perhaps has a bit more refinement in the very high frequencies because not only does the Geshelli sound great but it's so much fun, I constantly find myself "toe tapping", another dead give away that it's awesome and it clearly betters my reference in sound stage and bass dynamics. I do have the earlier J2 with the 4493 chipset, but the JNOG2 socketed Sparkos, AK4499 chipset along with the USB upgrade is unquestionably better and well worth the added cost - I really appreciate Cheapaudioman for putting me onto the Geshelli DAC's and congrats to Geshelli and their latest offering for being Randy's DAC of the year.

I got a cheap BT DAC which has a BT 5.2 receiver and "audiophile-grade Hi-Fi Bluetooth receiver features ES9018K2M chip" Question on Apple Lossless (which seems NOT straightforward) what quality is being achieved over Bluetooth? I understand not even apples own Airplay2 actually supports the HiFi lossless... seems like you have to use wires (from PC or other device) to achieve the Lossless ability?

I would try both, the SU-1 I have sounds like a wet blanket was thrown over my system. I have a Schiit Gumby, and it is too sterile/clinical.

I’m a Schiit fan. I buy all their Schiit…except headphone gear-nope. I’m struggling to buy the Syn. I get the fun factor. I get it. But, I like Dolby processors and another stack of amps is really hard to justify. I don’t know how I’d incorporate it into my listening.

Because the Eversolo is multiple times the price of Wiim products. There is not much of a value proposition. The current price of the Eversolo doesn't compete at all with products that deliver nearly the same, for far less.

Maybe the eversolo sounds tipped up and digitally harsh, so despite the touchscreen it's the sound quality that isn't that great. And for something you buy for music, that seems to be a bit of a bummer at nearly $1k

Price to performance. And the WiiM is simply incredible in regards to software, none of these other companies have even come close to matching it. And the DAC in the WiiM is not all that bad for the money with a good power supply. I sold my Node N130 after getting the WiiM Pro, and canceled the order for the EverSolo. It is the built in, easy to use 10 band EQ that takes the WiiM over the top in my book.

Hey, can you suggest a DAC that would sound better than Denon x3700h internal DAC. Looks like denon has not disclosed the DAC info for x3700h avr and I am not sure if spending on external DAC is worth it or not. There are mixed suggestions on some forums but no is suggesting a DAC that would surpass the x3700h DAC.

The Streamer DAC which I use, is never talked about and is perfect and it has it all including a 10" LCD screen to view media info. It features - studio quality playback 192MHz and Dolby Atmos sound with10 band equalizer, it can run all the streaming services, I can connect it to my amp (Douke ST01 Pro) via 3.5" jack or Bluetooth and use my amp remote to control playback, it has Wi-Fi, it has an SD card slot to hold 1TB of lossless audio files. Why does nobody talk about using a modern tablet as the perfect playback streamer playback Device ????? I have a Lenovo TAB 10 Gen 3 which I purchased really cheaply.

Well bluetooth is lossy and buit-in DAC in handheld devices aren't usually that great. There are however loads of videos of usb-c/lightning connected DAC dongles which is a solid starting point for a lot of people. I prefer to not tether my phione, tablet pr laptop to my hifi-system though and I'd rather control the playback from the streamer with my phone wirelessly instead. That's one great benefit of using a dedicated streamer too.

@@Olofberglund If a DAC is certified for Atmos I'd say it's better than most as it's meeting a HiRes standard. I would say a DAC dongle is inferior as cooling such a small device is difficult. I don't connect using Bluetooth just because the 3.5" jack allows surround sound. A tablet is not considered a hand held device of which there are really good MP3 players that cost lots of money and have all the features and sound quality of HiFi devices.

Well, it really doesn’t matter if you consider a tablet a handheld device or not. Wether the DAC in that tablet is good or not I have no idea, I just gave my point of view why I think hardly anyone is talking about it, as per your question. The same goes for 3,5mm outputs in laptops and tvs, most are quite bad and even the good ones in that category is not comparable to most dedicated DACs’ output. So if that tablet has a great DAC and analog output - that’s great! Most in that category are crap 💩 Hence the lack of interest in the hifi-community.

Not being a smart Alec but on these streamers, most notably the fiio r7… what can it do an iPad mini plus a dragonfly dac, can’t? The more I see them the more that question comes to mind. And no one I have found has ever comps ed the two

Bargain! The KLH model 3 speakers originally came out for $1800 a pair with stands. Due to mixed reviews they now sell for $1000 a pair! Heck of a deal if you like them. Id reserve judgment until I heard them myself on trial Not much to lose if you audition from say one of the on line retailers with a return policy.

SMSL for $80 is great and completely transparent so really the only DAC you will ever need. Wiim is pretty much the go to streamer at this point. Love the Pro Plus. It is my preamp, DAC, and EQ for my stereo setup.
