We’re excited about releasing our picks for the best impact drivers we’ve tested, including models from Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita, and more. In a subsequent video, we’ll be testing impact drivers from other brands including Flex, Bosch, Kobalt, Ridgid, and others. I prefer makita over everything. Had the xdt 16 which was great. Has all the modes and even more power than the newer ones. Later sold that one and bought the td173 from Japan. It fits in tight spots, has a halo light setting buttons where you can see them and better balanced shape. Not to mention it comes in olive green

Go with Dewalt. Best balance of quality and price across its range of tools. Milwaukee is expensive and slightly better. Makita is overpriced for most getting into a tool ecosystem, except for seasoned tradesmen. Ryobi is good for homeowners but isn't that durable.

Only thing I don't like about the Milwaukee M18 impact drivers are that they don't have the eject function when pulling the collet. You have to use both hands. The DeWalt has the eject function which is a little feature that makes a big difference, especially when you are swapping a super hot drill bit and you have to pull it out. Come on Milwaukee! Add the dang ejector collet!

@@deluxepressureNot a fan of that eject either where it launches the bit like a missile and I have to be picking them up everytime... Worst if I am in a ladder.

Got my m18 gen 4 (2953-20) about 2 months now. Does yours eject the bit when you pull on the collet? Ryobi, ridgid, and some dewalts have an almost spring assist that spits the bit out when released and I'd like to know if milwaukee never included it or I got a defect.

Most Milwaukee’s don’t have the bit eject collet, including the 2953

That feature can actually work against you. I work on ladders and if I should use a tool like that and release the bit, it would shoot out of the collet and I would have to climb down appropriately 18ft every time that happens to get the bit. Not practical in my line of work so am glad my gen 4 doesn't do that.

@@Trae.T001up high I can see that being annoying but my first use was replacing broken DWV ABS support straps and when in an older home the space between the joist was near a water heater's plumbing. 1 inch bit inside the gen 4 kept it stubby without me needing to buy a new right angle impact/drill or attachment. down side is you need some needle noses to get the bit out and spring assist would've been cool for that

@@TOOL_TECHNICAL I don't use 1 inch bit bear in my impact I have longer bits. I did insert a 1inch smt in the past and it came out effortlessly

dude u compared the latest Milwaukee with 1-2 generations old makita. where is td173 18v and td002 40v. in hammer drills and impact drivers makita is much better all-around performer than any other brand on the market by a good shot

I don’t even even have to watch this video to give you my opinion. I really like the new rRdgid four mode and the 36 V Metabo HPT triple hammer.

@@diygearreviews I did a head to head comparison between the Ridgid four mode and the Metabo HPT 36 V triple hammer. When they both had the batteries that come in the kit, it was very close. With the specs, it shouldn’t have been that close. The Ridgid dominated, though, with the EXP battery.

So it’s 2024 and the latest at best DeWalt you have is an 887? Do you honestly sincerely feel like that’s a fair comparison with the best offerings from others? I mean there are at least 3 newer models that outperform the 887 in some or all ways. 840, 845 and 850. But you know that, everyone that is into these tools knows that. Don’t you feel like it a little disingenuous to not put at least an 845 or 850 in the test? I have an 887, it’s worked well for me for a long time, and I still use it, I also got an 850. I’m also not glued to one brand so I can be honest when talking about tools. I also have (2) of the M12 versions, a Metabo, a Kobalt Standard brushless and a Kobalt XTR, oh and also the latest brushless Ryobi. The 850 is probably my favorite but I also like the Metabo for the thin head shape for smaller things. The M12s are good for the size, but I hate the thick handles, if I’m using it any more than for a quick job, I don’t bother. The XTR is a beast and heavy. I only use it sort of as a beater.

Honestly, it’s really close with the dewalt models. There’s a chance the 850 makes the cut in future pick updates. When considering performance for the price, the 845 is exceptional. But it tested with far less torque than the 887, though is fast. The 850 is amazingly performant for the size, but the Milw gen 4 far outclasses the speed and torque by a country mile in our tests, and is only slightly longer tip to tail. We’ll be testing metabo, ridgid, flex, etc in later rounds and they have some great offerings. For Dewalt we’ve tested: 887/888, 850, 845, and dcf801. If wanting the reviews on our site go into far more depth on each and you can get a sense for why your suggestions were close but didn’t make the final cut. Arguably, really great impacts and some great values.

Those test don't mean much to me, but are you really expecting good results from using a 2ah battery and then also calling makita a "DYI / Homeowner " brand ? Really?

Fair points. But we standardize the speed tests using 2Ah batteries across all impacts for apples to apples performance comparisons. Could arguably use 5Ah for these tests as well. All will classify tools differently but the performance and price of the LXT lineup fits well with mostly non pros, and the XGT GDT01 and GDT02 are beefier pro/prosumer picks, IMHO.

@@diygearreviews not that it matters too much, but would be interesting to see your thoughts with a 5ah batteries. Milwaukee will still outperform others though. I didn't pick makita for the most power, I picked it for everything else. Ergonomics, vibration, sound and quality.

I no longer care about performance. I have all the latest Makita impacts and i went back to the XDT14. I can find them for under $40 next to new on my local buy and sells and beat the ever living piss out of them and not have a care in the world about it. Youll pay the price in warrantied tools with milwaukee. They may have more jam, but they break eay faster. Ive got a huge M12 lineup and some M18 stuff and almost every tool has been warrantied once some of them twice and in regards to the M12 Fuel multi-tool im on the 3rd warranty.

Notice he has a 2ah battery on all the tools and calls makita a "DIY/ homeowner brand " 🙄 Im just like you and don't care about those tests. Ill get and test the tool myself before I make a decision, but at the same time some of the test are just a satire 🙄

That's weird I still have milwaukees from 2008 used hard almost every work day until 2020 and still work great. I find dewalts went way down hill and mikitas are like fisherprice. I work on the oil sands and the dewalts go out for service the most then mikitas then the milwaukee if any

@@diygearreviews both my brother in law are pros. One is a carpenter and the other is a roofer, both are Dewalt fans. I introduced them both to makita, one to the lxt and the other to xgt. Now them and the whole crew's favorite impact drivers are makita. Carpenter says he donesnt even grab Dewalt impacts anymore and the roofer tells me how makita is much better built and makes Dewalt impacts feel like toys.

@@markk3948 All my milwaukee tools have been purchased in the last 3 years approx. What started me buying them was when their Gen2 Nailers came out. They're the best IMO. But yeah, maybe it's just bad luck, compared to others I'm not THAT rough on my stuff buy they've all had some kind of electronic failures inside after a year or two of use, not even daily. And don't get me wrong, their warranty process has been fantastic. My local repair center would have a new tool to me within a week, no questions asked. It's just annoying, I guess. And it won't really stop me from buying them because they do make some good stuff.

Can’t speak for the Makita 19 but the 13,14, and 16 are great impact drivers and the DeWalt impact’s are good as well. Don’t care much for Milwaukee newer stuff the older m12 stuff has been good for me but the 18 volt line is unreliable and the new m12 stuff gets to hot don’t see it holding up. We have the newest Milwaukee 18 fuel impact and drills at work they don’t do a bit more than my Makita’s do half the time I am ahead .

i just want a compact length corded impact driver. they don't seem interested in making tools that could last longer than the few years batteries last & are available. meanwhile, wall plugs are the same as they were 50yrs ago, and never need time to charge. profit margin & sales growth for shareholders still existed back in the corded days, but guess it's not enough for them anymore? rather flood landfills, waste resources, & have us buy whole new sets to fund that 3rd yacht.
