"...inspect yourself..." at 8:20 (OK! I will!!). This is the best vid on the subject. Thorough, researched and vetted by Consumer Reports (I checked). Just finished watching a TON of these vids (currently in a national forest surrounded by mosquitos and hiding in the van to avoid) and this vid hits all the marks: comprehensive, direct, informative and genuine. Just funny enough to make me smile (which is important, of course) but none of the other vids mentioned the damage DEET can cause to gear. None of the other vids mentioned treated clothing. I am both informed AND subbed - because of this vid. Many, many thanks.

I'm glad you liked! I use Martin's permethrin for my clothes- way cheaper than Sawyer and just as effective. I hear it's primarily for farm use.

Hi, thank you so much for these videos. I recently had a tick encounter at a public park near a pond; it was enough for me to second-guess locations I thought were safe otherwise, so I have a few questions. Where should I be on the lookout for ticks? Likewise, what is considered safe (like playgrounds, mulch areas, botanical gardens, that sort of thing) Is Repel good against ticks as well as mosquitos? And I've heard that permethrin could possibly be a carcinogen. It's safe, right?

Hello! Great questions! Ticks can be anywhere, but tall grasses and anywhere where you're brushing against vegetation is higher risk. Being clear of those, such as the middle of a trail, or the areas you mentioned, are lower risk, but a tick check should always be performed after going outside. Ticks also prefer wetter climates, so you're more likely to encounter one in wetlands than in arid environments. I usually see them on grasses after it rains. It's almost become a game for me to look for them! A tick needs to be attached (not just on you, but biting you) for 24+ hours in order to transmit anything, so diligent checks will help keep you safe. Insect repellents that work against mosquitoes work against ticks as well. I have had really good luck using that Repel OLE with both ticks and mosquitoes in areas where both have been thick. Permethrin is banned in some countries for the potential health risks. However, my research showed minimal risks with it. Here's one example: health.maryland.gov/phpa/IDEHASharedDocuments/permethrin.pdf That said, I don't know that ANYTHING is 100% safe, but I do know that tick-borne and mosquito-borne illnesses can be life altering, and I personally am willing to take the risk of using permethrin to protect myself and my family until evidence to suggest it is more dangerous than exposure to these insects is. I do wear a mask and gloves when I treat my clothing just to help reduce my own risk of potential exposure. Be aware that WET permethrin poses neurotoxic risks to cats, so make sure if you opt to try it out, you don't have a cat around at least until everything is dry. Hey there! I'm looking specifically for a repellent that works for wasps and I heared that only IR3535 can do that. Do you have any information regarding the effectivness on wasps for these repellents? Where I live only one product uses IR3535 and I use it for years now, but I'm still a little bit uncertain if it really works how I want it to.

It keeps the bugs away really well. It’s all I use these days. I also use Murphy’s candles to keep them away at camp (not backpacking of course). Once they get going, they make about 90% of the mosquitoes go away, so that’s always helpful, too! When I’m backpacking, if they’re bad (like in the Sierra), I’ll add a head net. I also permethrin my clothing, including my sun gloves and socks.
