Adrian Figueroa These aftermarket intakes arent tuned, the stock ecu is meant to work with the stock intake.. if you aint tuning, i suggest upgrading the Intercooler and do a complete aftermarket exhaust system (without downpipe) if you want to retain stock ecu (no tuning). Probably get 330-335hp .

I’ve done hood closed tests myself on a dyno and they do give an increase. But the catch being, it was on a basemap tune. On the stock tune the best they saw was 1-4 hp gains. With a tune they see much more gains. An intake that wasn’t tested here but has really impressive gains is the eventuri intake. On my local shops dyno it saw an average of 16.5 hp gained, with the best run having 18.7 hp gained over the stock intake on a basemap tune. Intakes only really show their advantages once tuned. Only real difference on a stock tune is the added noise.

Jay_M I’m running the car now with a flashpro and a PRL HVI. Hondata doesn’t have an ots tune/calibration for intake except I think eventuri? I’m not sure now. Either way the butt dyno likes it and sound is worth. Pro tune might be different story

I wouldn't get a KNN filter. Hold it up to the light and you'll see how much additional dirt is getting into your engine. I'll stick with the stock filter, which is actually pretty heavy-duty if you take a look at it. All the KNN filter does, is give you additional noise on your blow off valve. I'll pass in favor of more filtration.

You should test the PRL silicone pipe with a drop in K&N filter. Cheapest next to stock and from other test videos appears to be a great option.
@dkaplan100
@dkaplan100 5 жыл бұрын
As per Engineering Explained, you will see about a 3% increase with the drop in filter. Now with the silicone pipe, while there may be smoother walls to allow better airflow, plastic is still going to insulate the heat out better leaving colder air temps. If someone made a smooth inside plastic tube, you would more likely to bring it to full potential

I've been seeing a huge trend with the type R of stock parts outperforming many aftermarket parts with people who own them stating that they would have been better off leaving certain things alone. Obviously there are some things that can make considerable gains if replaced but not the case with many of the traditional bolt-ons. Quite a testament to the engineering that Honda put into this car. I guess if they went as far as to make it look like a turbo twinkie they must have had good reasons for their design decisions.

Do intake temps really matter with a turbo engine? When the air hits the compressor its going to heat up anyway. If you want cooler air to the intake manifold, invest in a better intercooler. If I'm wrong, please enlighten me.
@TheFK8Life
@TheFK8Life 2 жыл бұрын
The type R uses a charge air target to hit - intake temps effect power as density varies by air temp but the ecu just allows the turbo to spin harder to compensate for air density. These intakes effect density by air temp but also change volume/velocity The stock closed box is most likely maintaining better velocity and denser air charge over the open element filters Also for the type R its best to show uncorrected numbers as it compensates on its own for baro/air temps where a dyno would add/subtract power figures based on those variables.

Point of contention: You're running the car on a dyno with the car stationary which means you're sucking in static air that's sitting around the engine bay. In a real world application the car is moving with air traveling into the air box at the speed of the vehicle. If an aftermarket air intake system allows a greater volume of air to be enter the air box, then the average temperature of the air is going to be cooler than the restricted amount of air the OEM air box will allow in during the real world movement of the car

I'm glad you aren't a sheep and see this video for what it is. Other tuners I have spoken with (KTuner, Phearable, Etc) all agreed this video is laughably wrong, the PRL HVI (not tested here) makes real power over the stock airbox whether tuned or not. Hondata's testing parameters are flawed as you pointed out. Funny too because Hondata offered an intake list on their FlashPro for the various aftermarket intakes before it was discovered it did nothing... This video is a joke, and re-affirms that I made the right choice going with KTuner.

To be expected, for under the hood intakes. If you note where the filter sits on each and every intake in the video, clearly that when the filter is located lower in the Engine bay, that intake wins... Injen had the lowest placed filter, which means it beat all the other aftermarket intakes, then the Mishimoto had the next lowest filter winning second, so on and so forth. OBVIOUSLY, the stock intake did best because when it comes to making an intake that is located under the hood, the OEM has the best research and development to make the best intake. Therefore, their filter was placed low, it was placed with the best seal from heat coming in, the best seal for having air feed to it from the bumper/grill area, and had the correct piping diameter. No brainer. As for the PRL CTR Fk8 intake, I expect to see the same results as the Takeda, since their filter is up high. Even in PRLs tests, they show that at about 4k-4.5k there was a possible difference than stock (during their hottest runs, which matter most). As for the Eventuri intake, I see it to be closest to the Mishimoto intake, because the filter is pointed down, not just up high like the PRL and Takeda. Mishimoto likely coming out on top compared to the Eventuri, and Injen still the best for the aftermarket intakes. Now, we wait for a Cold Air Intake test. Clearly, just as "Doug" stated, cold air is best. Cold Air intakes have the filter placed outside of the engine bay, away from the heat, and ALWAYS win when it comes to making power, because they get COLD (aka not under hood) air. They should rename this test, the Short Ram Intake test.

@DelSolTypeR1987
@DelSolTypeR1987 5 жыл бұрын
Mishimoto has an aluminium box which holds the heat instead of deflecting it, therefor reducing or negating the gains made. Eventuri had a CF multiple layer airbox which deflects the heat way better. I have one in my FK8 and i can notice a difference in the upper powerband due to better flow. Sadly i cant back up the statement yet as i havent dynod my car. I did however run a friend who was stock and we noticed my car walking away every time at the end of our gears. (rolling starts at 70 km/h starting in 3d gear) im not a fan of any of the above intakes really hence why i went with Eventuri. However, in the UK there is a company called TDi north which has several FK8s in the 400+ hp range, with alot of them using the Injen intake used in the test above, none of them using stock airbox, so the intake has to make some difference i would think.
@copperkeyracing6167
@copperkeyracing6167 5 жыл бұрын
Aluminum is good for getting rid of heat from a heat source attached or going through it, like an intercooler, radiator, or heat sink. Plastic is the best for keeping heat from getting in in the first place. Next time, use more plastic, Mishimoto. The Mishimoto seems to have chambers, and that's why I would think it would do better than the Eventuri, but it could be the other way around.
@DelSolTypeR1987
@DelSolTypeR1987 5 жыл бұрын
@@copperkeyracing6167 the Mishimotos performance isnt even close to Eventuri's (after a tune). While you are right, its only partially right. Aluminium cools down faster provided its being exposed to a cooling factor (water, airflow). If its not it holds the heat. In the bay itself its close to the turbo and the air coming through the scoop isnt enough to cool the box down. A tuner in the Netherlands told my friend his mishimoto airbox was holding him back slightly from gaining even more
@TheFK8Life
@TheFK8Life 2 жыл бұрын
Better test would be actual data ogs at speed with fresh air coming in on the road Since the Type R uses aircharge targets it will compensate by varying the turbo speed to speed up or slow down to meet aircharge targets. While power will be similar, youll see which intake uses less boost/less speed to hit aircharge target. Plus - once you tune the R for more power - the volume/velocity of the intake becomes more important than at stock power levels. Stock intake will be too small/restriction for 400+whp setups Show the logs

This testing was done on a stock vehicle, it’s ridiculous how many idiots here saw this video and actually think the stock intake is superior to an aftermarket one even on a tuned vehicle.

@@TheFK8Life Nice gains my dude. I’m full bolt ons and running the Phearable Stage 2/KTuner tune and dyno’d at 402BHP/375TQ so not quite as high speed as you lol, but definitely made some nice gains over stock. I too have the PRL HVI and could literally hear the difference in the turbo spooling and the air being sucked in when I got it vs. the stock intake. My buddy who is a JDM mechanic and race car driver literally told me the amount of idiots on the internet who hate intakes and other mods really boils down to people not wanting to spend money on mods and justify it by claiming “stock is better hurr durr”.

@@CobraKaiNoMercy On a tuned car with a larger MAF housing, I'd agree with you. But without changing the MAF housing, just like most intakes on the market, they are purely just for sound. As their testing showed, it was the IATs that killed the effectiveness of these intakes. The variances were small, but everything downstream from the intake had to work harder for sure.

its hard to negate the raw numbers, but still. No Eventuri airbox used sadly. Also no comment in how the intakes would perform in a tune. This is all on stock tune.

The only really bad air intake temps listed were those of the short ram systems. The slight increase in air intake temps with the CAIs could be a result of increased engine temps due to leaner air fuel ratios.

3 fans like that can never simulate the actual airflow experienced on the open road at 120 mph at the top of fifth gear (I dont even really know the top speed of the 1 to 1 gear and im not even sure what gear 1 to 1 it is). Even factoring in the under draft of a moving car sucking away hot air from the exhaust, and who knows hot having a fully heated radiator near a static intercooler and exhaust turbine housing gets. Yet again, an intake like this only takes advantage of cold air if there is cold air available to be taken advantage of. It doesn't make cold air... Im sure if you took readings from the IAT sensor while driving the IATs would be much lower than 120F.
@HondataInc
@HondataInc 5 жыл бұрын
We logged the reading from IAT2 (the front) on a Civic Type R with a short ram intake on the race track at 80-100 mph. It read 175F.
@mikehorb9485
@mikehorb9485 5 жыл бұрын
@@HondataInc Oh. Well thats kind of embarassing I suppose. That appears to be more of an issue with the overall design of heat management on the Type R. Im not sure what the testing protocol was for this track session but if your intake temp on the short ram was 175F then it must not have been a very fun track day. Was the overflow tank on the rad literally spewing coolant everywhere? Hitting like over 230F easily? Anything softer than a 400 treadwear tire mustve been melting into the track. Im spoiled, living 300 feet above sea level with ambient temperatures only reaching 60F for at least half the year makes a difference. Without the full info as to track conditions etc, it kind of sounds like the car wouldve been bogging on that thin blazing hot air with the stock airbox anyways... which yet again is just kind of offputting.

if all a shitty tune does is raise parameters, you’ll see the gains. But doesn’t mean an aftermarket intake was needed. In our s550 coyote engines, a tuner name Alejandro proved that the stock air box out performs over big name manufacturers. I’ll trust the graphs over these companies trying to sell you some fancy looking engine dress up.
