As a life-long Boston Red Sox fan, I have hated the New York Yankees all my life. Still, I have loved listening to John Sterling's broadcasts of the Evil Empire's games, year after year after year. The best rivalry in baseball from 1974 to 2021 (today it's the Padres and Dodgers) was the Red Sox and Yankees. 19 games in the regular season, and potentially 7 games in the championship series (2003 and 2004). I would listen to the Red Sox broadcast with Joe Castiglione, and then go back and listen to John Sterling's call of the same game. Sterling was above all else entertaining, intelligent, and so knowledgeable about the history of the game. In my early 20s, before I left NYC in 1974 to study law in San Diego, I listened to John Sterling's radio talk show that preceded the Yankee broadcasts, and he was interesting back then. I was genuinely saddened to hear that the Great One has retired.

I'm here like a lot of you because of John Sterling's retirement. I always enjoyed these calls and they are just a bit more special today. Some of you may not know that Sterling was an Atlanta announcer for the Braves and the Hawks before he came to the Yanks, and as fate works in its mysterious ways, when you watch videos of Larry Bird's famous 60 point game, you will hear the golden voice of John Sterling doing the play-by-play from Hawks radio.

Relatively new Mlb fan from the UK, Rays became my team and not knowing the history i would always get irritated when hearing the "Yankees win" call when recapping games. But I'm going to weirdly miss that annoyance now i think, seeing them win without hearing that at the end of a recap isn't going to feel right.

Eesh. First time hearing the Urshela, Romine and Didi calls. I've liked his older ones but the newer (last 3 years) are just sooo forced. Like with the Didi one, the 'Yes-in-didi' part is fine, but a whole lot of people won't get the Age of Aquarius reference. It's too much for one call sometimes
