Hey Alex! Love your channel! Ultra helpful to a new kayaker like me. I was looking at the old town sportsman 120 pdl or the Wilderness Recon 120 HD. Upgrading from an inflatable - which of these would be the better pick? I’m 6’1” 210 and usually fishing lakes and rivers; mostly fresh water with the occasional coast trip. Is the sportsman still a relevant design??? The recon looks so much more modernized I was curious if the old town is becoming a dated design in comparison.

@@k_sr20 I should compare these two! The sportsman's have always been a favorite of mine, but I think the recon offers more space, ummm it is hard! My heart says 120 sportsman's but I'm not sure lol here is the thing I know old town delivers quality boats with 5 year warranty on the drive like yeah I would go that way

Sign of the times that all these kayaks are motorised or pedal yaks. Most of them are also quite heavy. My best Yak would be the Viking Profish Reload Bixpy version. Light, great to paddle, removable tackle pod and can handle surf launching and offshore conditions. Also fast when either paddled or using the Bixpy. (And no drilling or modifications required for the Bixpy as it fits their rudder which is removable )

Thanks mate! I’ve been searching all over the internet but every time I look for a fast fishing kayak all I get is motorized or pedal monstrosities 😅. I’ve owned pedal kayaks and they are ok for beginners but once you learn how to paddle you never want to go back. I’ll certainly take a look for Viking kayaks. Can you give me any other recommendations? I’m 6’ 2” and around 280 pound but somehow I can paddle 20 miles.

I’m going to be pairing a trolling motor with a 100ah lithium battery, how long do you tend to get out of your 100ah with prolonged use? For example can you power the motor for hours on end at a moderate speed or is it shorter than that? Thanks.

@ChrisDavis333 for me Light wind No current (ponds) Mostly 1-3 power At times run and gun on 9-10 . To cross lake or pond . Lots of spot locking . Between 8-10 hours of fishing that day When I return usually 60-70% battery left .

1 boat. Screw that. Yaks are affordable and even the older ones are still nice. I collect guitars and could not imagen only having just one. You have more choices than you need now. DIY was a big reason I started. Love to tinker. Still using my 400.00 Ascend D10T. Total Frankenstein. It is a tank and takes me out on lake Mi. chasing salmon. 3mph if I'm lucky. Yak fishing is the best sport in the world. Love you guys. God speed.

I will have the Stealth Profisha 525 at the top of my list. It is light enough to pass the stairs test 'Can 1 person carry it down or up 3 flights of stairs?' Extremely stable, I had mine out fishing in a windstorm, getting blown sidewise by the chop and getting pushed around the swell and never come close to capsizing. Very easy and efficient to paddle, so no need for a pedal drive or motor. My longest day on the water was 42miles. Can launch or land in almost any condition, and can handle all but the roughest of conditions. If a kayak can handle offshore conditions, it will handle lake paddling like a breeze. Downsides, they can be hard to buy, the surf ski style rudder does hit the bottom in extreme shallows. No good for very tight streams, because the turning circle is too big.

Alex, what are your thoughts on the Kaku Zulu? Where would you place that on your list? It seems to check all of the boxes, Paddle, pedal, rear motor, Bow motor, power pole mounts, Roll out wheels that attach to 2 of the 5 power pole mounts, plus, very comfortable and versatile chair, 7'10" ×20" of deck space thats fully padded, in hull battery storage, minimum 500 lb capacity, extremely stable, and although its heavy it weighs less than alot of other 12'+ kayaks. Plus, you cant get much better customer service than talking directly to or emailing the owner. Honestly, just wondering your thoughts and why this didn't make your top 10? Thanks, I appreciate it:)

I've been kayak fishing for 7 yrs now. I started with a used pro angler 12 with original mirage drive, think was 2015 or 2014?? Anyways it was awesome I used it every week sometimes multiple times a week. Then middle/end of last summer I bought PA12 360 it is absolutely amazing.Yes they already had fixed & updated certain parts on 360 drives. Then I posted my old PA12 for sale & sold it within 4 day's for same price I paid 6.5 yrs ago. So I've had 2 pro anglers c& now 360 for past 7yrs for price on 1! That's not exspensive when u look at it like that. My in-laws have older PA14 & Outback both of those are awesome too. That's why I like the PA12 become it's right in middle of those 2. I can fish it anywhere & do very often

Will you make a top 5 Stand Up Fishing Kayaks for 2022 video? Would love to see your list and why. I am in the market for a new kayak and this time I am going with one I can comfortably stand up and fish from and right now the Perception Outlaw is at the top of the list with the Bonafide RS117 second. I feel the Old Town Bigwater deserves a place on this list. I demo’d (or own) most of these kayaks and that one is faster than them all. Everything else that should be here is though, overall a respectable list

it is faster than most boats, but it is not as stable as people think and it really needs so major redesign, too much wasted space, the epdl version improved that a bit, still not there yet

@@AliexFolgueiraIt does have limited space in back for sure. I am told it fits the 16x16 blackpak and one of those flat coolers, so it'll do me well. It was certainly no more rickety standing in solid current than my Bonafide SS127, so I'm not too concerned with the stability. I mean I never flip but I have bad balance and might go over.

Any reason you picked the nucanoe unlimited over the pursuit? Everyone says the pursuit is amazing to paddle. You can also put their pedal drive on the pursuit. Nucanoe also offers a bow mount trolling motor with spot lock.

I live in Minnesota and just purchased and received a Zulu, and I'm thinking about driving south soon to try it out:) For me I chose the Zulu do to its versatility, and also because I will be bringing my 5 year old daughter with me when it's too cold for her to use her kayak(She has a Lifetime Recruit) and also so I can bring my 55 lb German Shepherd/Mountain Curr with me:) Also, the seat is extremely comfortable and versatile, and I like the fact that I can stand on it or sit on the backrest:) Also, the owner Kevin seems to be a great guy, and the couple times I called he answered the phone:)

I'm kinda shocked you didn't include the 106MK or Predator/Bigwater. Old Town kills the game with those 3 platforms...and they're phat in terms of build substance. The Hobie Lynx is sweet, but I wouldn't go fishing or funning on the ocean with it. It reminds me of a dinner plate w/fins & rudder. Kinda looks like a good breeze would send you skidding across the ocean with little difficulty.😂😂😂 NEWS ALERT: MAN FISHING THE KEYS GETS BLOWN TO CUBA ON A DINNER PLATE OF A KAYAK!😂😂😂

That's the first time I've ever heard someone recommend the Bonafide for it's paddling ability. Great list though, I'd say the Outback is definitely number 1. It's probably the only boat on the entire list that you can easily surf launch and fish offshore and still be just as efficient bass fishing lakes and rivers. I say this as a Nucanoe guy that is surrounded by Hobie Outbacks on every body of water I fish.

@@KillenNReelinoutdoors I have the Frontier 12. It depends on the type of fishing you're doing. The setup you mentioned is incredible for lake fishing. It really depends on what you plan on doing and what your needs are. The NuCanoe can be set up tandem which is a gamechanger. I take one of my kids or my wife with me on occasion, but I mostly fish solo. It's just a matter of removing a seat and sliding the other seat forward or back to center yourself again. Other kayaks you can't do that. If you're always solo then that feature isn't helpful. You can get the Oldtown Sportsman that has the spotlock motor in the peddle drive pod area. The Nucanoe is just a blank canvas that you can setup a million different ways whereas the Oldtown most of those features come included. You add up the price after all is said and done and it's probably the same. It really just comes down to preference. Both have comfortable seats. The Nucanoe seat swivels 360° though. You also get a transom on the Nucanoe if you ever want to upgrade to an outboard motor. On the Nucanoe Facebook page the new flavor of the month is a Suzuki 2.3 outboard on the back with a Xi3 on the bow. It's like a mini bass boat lol.

Which kayak is the most stable in your experience....I got the nucanoe unlimited.....I can stand on one leg and control the trolling with the other foot. I just haven't been in any other kayaks to know.

I need a lot of help deciding on a new yak. I mainly do river cruises, no fishing which is something i want to pick up on, but i want a yak with good storage for my phone, bluetooth JBL speaker, cup holder. sit on top preferred too. I have a sit in Pelican but i feel like im done with it. I also want PDL option for going upstreams and kind of chilling out. Anyone have recommendations? Ive looked at the old town 120 and 106, moken 12.5, Hobies, perceptions and a ton more and just cant decide. I definitely want a PDL which has some sort of disconnect for shallow waters like creeks where i can flip to a paddle really quick. I need massive help with this decision lol

There’s no general consensus on these kayaks and I’m paralyzed because I don’t want to make the wrong decision. My only criteria is that I’m not spending 4-6 grand because that’s absurd and encroaching on real boat money. So what do I do? Vibe? Bonafide? Hoodoo? Brooklyn? Hobie? It’s confusing everyone says different shit.

Yup, everyone just talk about the stuff the bought some swear by it because they don't want to admit they made a mistake, others feel rob so they hate on it. What's your budget, where are you gonna be fishing? Do you want motor or pedal, or both?

@@AliexFolgueira my budget is under $3000, really would be more comfortable at $2500, but I have some wiggle room either way. I will be fishing the inlets/estuaries in Murrells Inlet, SC. I want the boat to have a pedal drive, I don’t really have a preference on what type of pedal drive it is, just that it works and is good. I will add power later with a Minn kota or Bixpy, I have experience with lithium batteries and I I’m an electrician by trade so I feel like for the money I could add something really nice for significantly less money than you pay for power kayaks. Under $3000, pedal drive, fishing inlets and estuaries, ability to add a trolling motor later.

there are a lot of choices, for motor only diy like setup you cant beat the bonafide pwr129 with nk300, you can probably source some inexpensive lithium battery, $1900 boat, nk300 , $1170 with my discount code aliex180. pdl kayaks i would go big or go home native titan 12.5 x $3599 cheaper option a lot less stuff old town 120 pdl, you can easily add, bixpy on the rudder, or nk300 on the back with a plate pp or a bow mounted trolling motor, more diy than the titan but you can do it native and old town have 5 years drive warranty, lifetime on the hull honorable mention nucanoe unlimited 10 or 12, outfitted with your motor of preference, im not sure about the pivot drive. hobie outback if you wanna spend hobie money and are under 270# and 6 ft lol the other boats work dont matter how big you are

The Old Town PDL 120 is one that I was looking at, I was also looking at Bonafide P127 and Hobie Mirage Outback. Out of those 3 which do you think would be best? I want to start with a PDL and add something like the nk300 or bixpy later, basically splitting the 2 larger expenses of the boat into 2 separate purchases instead of all at once. I seen the Old Town PDL 120 for $2500-$2600, the Bonafide P127 for $2999, and the Hobie Mirage Outback for $3200. Some notable others I’ve looked at within my budget are Native Slayer and Hobie Mirage Passport. The old town seems like the best deal, I kind of like that brand for some reason they seem like a good brand but also I don’t know anything really. I appreciate your help I’m actually going to make a purchase this time I’ve put it off for 2 years because I didn’t want to make the wrong choice but I’m tired of waiting I want to fish this season. I have one last question for you, what is the difference between the standard PDL 120 and the PDL 120 Salty and 120 Bigwater? Is that something I should be concerned about or should I just go for the standard one?

@@ChrisDavis333 i have questions about hobie quality and customer care, I provided the outback as an option but not for $3200. IF you want to stay under that $3000 the 120 pdl is the best choice, it is a tank, durable, the drive is very hard to break and if it does well you have that warranty, remember warranty does not cover accidents or stuff like that. THe 120 pdl is far more stable than the salty 120 and the bigwater, but the 120 it is also slower! like if your friends are on the salty pdl and bigwater, and you are on the 120 they are going to leave you behind! lol If i have to pick between the 3 i would get the 120 pdl because i much rather have the extra stability, for speed i can just add a motor

Highly disappointed, I know how much you hate the bigwater 132 but that is a fishing machine. Speed, stability, fishablity. Easy top 3. Yes the weight, I know the weight, everyone hates the weight!!!

Love my Old Town bigwater pdl 132. Have a lot of hours on the oregon coast bottom fishing and salmon trolling with surf launches and landings. I go out with friends and family who have various Hobies. Gotta say my Achilles is the landing. Those waves from behind are a challenge on the landing and TBH it seems the hobies get tossed around less and they are less likely to get dumped. Maybe it's operator error? Hands down my launch through 5-6' surf is less eventful than theirs and I love it. I think my seat is more comfortable and I can fish all day. They're more maneuverable which is nice when trying to get alongside someone in the waves, pull a crab trap, or get out on a dock. All nice boats though. Gotta figure out my technology and I could send you a pretty awesome surf launch video.

@@codysmith3989 I gotta say I love mines. I always have guys in hibie come over to check it out. Both are great kayak, I checked both out before buying and decided on the oldtown, and yes the weight is a problem but once you get it to the water it just makes you smile.

Shearwater. Best kayak? Ha Ha. No way, unless you state best kayak made in China. Chinese kayaks are ALL made w thinnest plastic of all kayaks. I bought one from Dicks. Returned it after using it 3 times. Deck too flexible, then split at the gunnel.

If you think the Shearwater 125 is a good kayak, then it's obvious you know nothing about kayaks. I owned a brand new one for one week. I couldn't get rid of that Chinese cheap leaking junk fast enough!!!!

@@AliexFolgueira When you buy a new kayak, your first stop shouldn't have to be the hardware store for sealant to stop the kayak from filling with water. The cheap plastic seat stay, the rudder not deploying, and these were common issues with your beloved 125. The hatches leaked like a chicken wire kayak. Believe me, this wasn't my first yak, but it was the cheapest and thinnest wall kayak I ever owned.

I upgraded from a cheap princess auto buffer/polisher to the dewalt after breaking the handle off. kzfaq.infoUgkxfzbDkCRyv3CFXnLZI4APZtRRuG2uRmP2 The dewalt is beyond rugged! It's super comfortable to use and the "D" handle has many options for holding onto it if you are working in weird positions. The electronic speed control is precise and it has a nice variable speed trigger for slow ramp up.I have upgraded to the 3m quick change setup and been using it for 3 years for reconditioning gel coat on boats. It's hard work for any machine and I've had no issues. If you need a machine that can put in serious work, this is the one you want. If you want to light buffing, on your car, this is not the machine for you. It's easy to control but you can get yourself in trouble very quickly if you don't know what you are doing.
