This is by far the best Winter deer food source and even if you have a great food plot, this is still critically necessary. It doesn't matter if you are on public or private land, this Winter food source has the power to save a food source.

Morning Jeff. This is a great "big picture" video. With great deer habitat comes great habitat for smaller mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, etc.. Biodiversity is something we all need to think more about. Whether it be in our deer woods or even around the yards of our houses! Variety is where it's at. Good stuff.

I'm going all in with winter food. I'm planting mast trees, brassicas, and dogwoods that they can chew on. Chestnut hybrids throw down chestnuts every year in abundance. Lots of tonnages too. I find it to be king to oak. Oak only throws down every other year or every couple years. It's nice when they do, but I want a yearly banger. Obviously I plant a variety. I do it all. Anything I can do to help the ecosystem.

My neighbors rotate soybeans and corn. Should i adjust my plots to accommodate soy this coming year? (Heavy brassicas is my plan) (2/3 brassicas 1/3 greens)

There are hunters in MN that supplemental feed Jan thru Aug, then have to stop feeding for the hunting season. Would love for you to do a video to share with others on how HORRIBLE of a management method that is and how horrible it is for the habitat to congregate the deer for so much of the year, only to pull it for hunting season.

Hardwood regeneration is crucial! Free winter food and cover! Quick question Jeff, for hunting in the Bluff Country, do you prefer to hunt the edges of the property, if food destination locations are centrally located on the property.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jon! It really depends on where food can be located and where depth of cover is. We have food centrally located in WI and we can't hunt it with a bow. So we hunt the bedding and movements around the food. In MN we have food located on edge, so we can hunt between the food, on the edge and yo the side. Tough for a definitive answer

Watched a ton of your videos on summer plots. How many deer do you target for a 46 acre parcel selectively cut, hilly, lots of browse. 70 acres surround same make up no hunting. Ag not close. Feel herd is low traffic low. Trying to clear access for travel about 4 acres available for plots.

Jeff, I'm looking at a property that has a lot of cedars on it. Obviously they can provide great cover so I wouldn't want to eradicate them, but do they have any value from a browse perspective?

@@davidyontz09 good luck! Depending on rain situation and what not can really open up time frame or pinch it down. I will say I just straight up broadcast that switchgrass in a drought year and it limped along to under 1ft tall the first year. Weed control with simazine pre green-up year 2&3 and it is my best stand of switch. This will be the beginning of the 4th year and it is a mature stand over my head through November until wet snow beats it down.

@joshny4766
@joshny4766 Жыл бұрын
Hi David. I've planted all my switch without using simazine. Reason being you need an applicators license in NY to buy it, which I don't have ! I rely strictly on gly, 2-4d and mowing .

Hey Jeff/Dylan, do you find that during this time of year bucks are more tolerant to being around does/fawns and even bedding near them? Or do you find that they tend to be more solitary like in fall? Are the bucks still bedding farther off food sources than does?
