Bill Ward is one the greatest drummers ever. And just imagine how this sounded to people first hearing this at a concert in 1970.

When this album came out...everything changed for me...This band single handedly changed music, forever, I couldn't wait to get to get back from Woolworth's to get this on the turntable...It is still one of my Favorite bands of all time, and back in those days, it was even better with a little "Puff, Puff, Pass" included!!! Rock ON!

One of my biggest regrets music wise, is having never seen Sabbath live. So I can't answer your specific (rhetorical) question but I CAN tell you what it did to me listening to the album for the first time. It blew my mind, I can only imagine that is what a first hit of heroin might be like. I was just numb afterwards, I could not comprehend what I had just heard.

Black Sabbath were true pioneers. The music press hated them with a passion. You gotta remember, this was the late 60s and early 70s. Flower power, folk, and psychedelic music were still mainstream. Black Sabbath created their own following. They were a success despite all the hate they received from the mainstream music press. No one was doing music like this. At the end of the day, the fans decide which bands make it. The fans spoke loud and clear with Sabbath. They laid the foundation for every metal band that came after them. If you think of all the bands they paved the way for, it's astounding. This is why they've transcended being legends. Ozzy, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward are icons.

Absolutely, I'm in my 70's now but couldn't get enough of Sabbath plus the explosion in rock music generally. I still have all that original vinyl. Great days.

This clip is f****ing EPIC!!! Everyone's in top form, but bill Ward is beating those drums like they owe him money. Not just one of Sabbath's best tunes, but one of the best songs ever written, for sure has a top 10 spot on my GOAT list.

Absolutely! I have picked up this playing style and used it through the late 80s and all the way to the early 2000s and most people were amazed!...because most drummers didn't played like that anymore. I just told them that it was nothing new. It was what I grew up listening to...my stage name was the Animal. Hence the Dr. Teeth look on my kick...and yes I performed that way!!!!

@@normansawatzky4778 I've been singing in bands since I was 13 and I'm now 61 and still playing. One of the best the best drummers I ever played with had a style which was a combination of Bill Ward and John Bonham. The dude hit hard.

Right! Actually Geezer Butler wrote most of the band's lyrics, drawing heavily upon his fascination with religion, science-fiction, fantasy and horror. He was the one who came up with the name of the band. Actually, just like JPJ from Led Zeppelin, people often overlook that the bass is right at the core of the music.

Geezer Butler is lauded for being prominent in the mix and fantastic bass playing. When people think of Good Times Bad Times, Communication Breakdown, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Whole Lotta Love, Since I've Been Loving You, Rock and Roll, Black Dog, When the Levee Breaks, Stairway to Heaven, The Song Remains the Same, Over the Hills and Far Away, Trampled Under Foot, Kashmir or Achilles Last Stand, they're not thinking about the bass. But Geezer Butler's bass is all over the early Sabbath records, especially the first three.

@@fuckamericanidiot I beg to differ. When l hear many of those songs you mentioned, I AM thinking of the bass. Those solo bass fills after the first verse in Good Times Bad Times. Are you kidding me? Pure 🔥! JPJ is who made me wanna play bass. I discovered Geezer/Sabbath very shortly thereafter. Now l put them on the same level. I think you are mistaken though to say that JPJ doesn't cut through the mix like Geezer. They both turned their bass way up. It was a crucial part of what made that era of heavy rock what it is.

War Pigs is one of the best songs of all time. The composition, guitars, drums, bass, vocals everything really astounding individually, but also complements each other so good as a whole. It's a timeless song and showcases why Black Sabbath are head of their time.

It conjures up a sense of mystical urgency in the real world political landscape that will be timelessly applicable to every war time scenario. In the middle of Vietnam this song came out, and any square with a back pocket sense of patriotism had to reel in abject horror to it. It's subversive. It's important. It's an inspiring and timeless masterpiece. Black fucking Sabbath FOREVER!!!!

Yes! Brad nailed it. There's such a huge difference between high quality musicians just getting together to layer on tracks for a hit, and a band of musicians who are exceptional but require each other to make a more cohesive sound based on chemistry. THAT'S what the best of the best do, imo. The all time greats, in any genre, from heavy metal to soul. If it has that raw quality it slaps so much harder.

Bill Ward is the real star of this particular performance imo, he really stands out with his nonstop exceptional fills throughout the song. He doesn't get talked about enough when discussing greatest drummers in history, Bonzo is a fantastic drummer but I think Bill Ward is better than him. The metal bands we love today wouldn't exist if Sabbath didn't pave the way for them, artists today are still copying Iommi's riffs lol.

As a Sabbath follower since 1968 it truly pleases me to see you younger folks reacting to the pioneers of Heavy Metal. This live performance from 1970 illustrates the true power of this band - Bill Ward is righteously known as a drummer god but his drum kit was that of a 10-year-old, yet he still exuded his classic thunder! - Thank you again for reacting to this!

This. I truly think its important and beneficial for someone who isn't too familiar with rock and its sound, to see it be performed live. It really shows the passion, talent and energy behind it. It isn't just random sounds at that point.

Hey man, you found an earlier version from a 1970's Concert in a Paris nightclub...with the original lyrics...cool. Remember too, they weren't famous yet, this is how they became famous, and it shows. Bill Ward reminds me of 'animal' on the Muppets, he's a madman and he's holding his drumsticks backwards. During the intermission they had to nail Bills drums to the floor.

That intangible thing that happens only when a band is just right.. A "collective" total that exceeds the sum of the individuals.

At 68 I lived thru this music. I watched Lex 's reaction to Free Bird. When I saw her eyes roll back in to her head I started crying. This is what music should be , it should rip into your SOUL.

When i was 17, me and a friend was passed out on another friends living room floor, only to be awaken to this song blaring while he and his parents were recording our reaction to be woken up...im 51 now....that was the good ole times...still one of my favorite songs today

Before Jim Marshall started making amps, he was a drum teacher, and a lot of the early rock drummers went to him at one time or another. Of course, Jim taught them jazz drumming, which they had to pare down to compete with increaingly powerful amps and p.a's. Bill Ward was a very under-rated lyricist.

The song that has said to be a direct influence to the creation of Heavy Metal came out in 1968 (and was written in 1967). It's a remake of the 1959 song Summertime blues and it's performed by the psychedelic/hard rock band Blue Cheer. In 1968 Blue Cheer were the heaviest thing around and you can see their interpretation of Summertime Blues on the Tops of the Pops tv show. Their drummer for their debut album Vincebus Eruptum (from where the song is taken), Paul Whaley, can be considered the creator of Heavy Metal. In 1967, nobody drummed like him, the influence on Heavy Metal is clear to see. You guys should really watch their performance, it is musical history, the moment metal drumming was born.

Very good most people don't even know about Blue Cheer. hey neve made it really big and only got even noticed because of a performance of Summer Time Blues on the Dick Clark show. Ya but Paul was an amazing drummer. It was rumored that he use to have to tape his drum sticks to his gloves he drummed with just hang onto them. Dick Clark on his show told him he was one of the hardest drums he has ever seen.

Blue Cheer was great(especially Whaley!), but without Sabbath and Deep Purple I doubt metal would have sounded the same.

Yes, to answer the question: best live performance I’ve ever seen, of any band. This was in recorded live in 1970. Mind-blowing. A musical revolution. I highly recommend watching the rest of the concert as well.

This is the way to explore the music you like. You listen to the studio version once and then if you like the song you can go watch all the best live performances and music videos. If you do that backwards, you might not appreciate the music as much because you're distracted by the screen; therefore, leading you not wanting to explore a song or artist because you didn't enjoy it as much. And listening to it first lets you use your own imagination to visualize the story, but if your first impression is somebody else's imagination(like some lame music video director that isn't the artist), then that's all you'll see. It's great to see you guys do these revisiting reactions!

I don’t think anyone imagined Ozzy Osborne ending up essentially on the same level as the Kardashians as “reality celebrities.” I mean I doubt anyone could have imagined the concept of “reality celebrities” in the first place, but if you’d explained it and they finally got what you were talking about, there’d be a long pause and they’d go, “….and you’re saying Ozzy was the star of one of these, with a wife and kids? I was a teenager when Sabbath hit it big and they blew my mind. This is one of their most powerful messages. There was nothing this hard before them, they basically invented heavy metal. Rock gods for sure.

Amazing how some music can sound timeless. Not influenced by trends but pure passion and talent. I came to know sabbath through the Nativity in Black tribute album and then listened to the originals amazing band especially for their time, definitely pioneers that bands that came later should thank for their influence on metal music.

There was a song recorded by Three Dog Night called "Mama Told Me Not To Come." I went to that party in 1971 or 72 when I was in the 7th grade. The reason I said I went to that party is because they were smoking cigarettes and playing the Paranoid album. Kind of a mind-blowing fearful feeling as my parents didn't have any idea about the world that dropped me off at... People call Ozzy crazy and maybe he is but it seems to me he confronts the horror of true reality and what can you expect after that very real dose of truth?

The top songs when this came out in 1970 Bridge over troubled waters, Close to you, American woman, Raindrops keep falling on my head, War, Ain't no mountain high enough, I'll be there, Get ready, Let it be, Band of gold That was the top 10 in 1970 Black Sabbath wasn't following a path, they were creating one

Best Live Ever? I've always had it on the list for sure. I've always loved this video, it's just crushingly heavy and perfect. The only flaw is the lyrics being different, but that adds it's own character and value. The song was so fresh, they weren't done writing it yet. You can tell how excited Ozzy is by it, which I can only imagine. It's a great video.

The thing is that this was made about vietnam and war in general and it still applies to this day. I didnt know about ozzy before the reality show lol i said to myself "wtf is he famous and have a show" then i started studying his lyric from black Sabbath and his solo. He always spoke truth

Ozzy killed the early and mid 70s with his voice and passion. U can easily tell when the drugs and buzz took overhand in the 80s, he looks like a completely different person there😂 If u wanna see the different react to "iron man" live at live aid ✌🏻

The drugs weren't any worse in the 80's. We actually had a lot better variety in the 70's. Ozzy's biggest issue was alcohol. This performance (1970) that we all love was 100% fueled by LSD. as are so many legendary performances from the 70's. Cocaine was more prevalent in the 70's (pre-crack) and was even featured in centerfolds in HighTimes magazine just like they would with killer photography of designer weed. Bill Ward was later forced to do a PSA disavowing drug use, lol, as were many major Rock stars in the 80's and 90's (tongue planted firmly in their cheeks). Remember kids, use=fun, abuse=very, very bad.

@@zedude7781 Big pupils are caused by LSD, which is a very safe compound. When you're multi-millionaire rock star, you don't do common street drugs and all the varieties they morphed in to during the 80's. Major acts were able to stick with the good stuff (weed, pure coke, pure crank, and all the hallucinogenics) but just like with whiskey, in some cases they would overdo the good stuff, which is a no no. Personally, Ihave done LSD close to 1,00 times and have benefitted from it greatly. I've won big time awards at work thanks to shrooms (nobody knew,lol) Ozzy was always ready for the stage, which is why he's lasted for 50+ years. In Rock & Roll, that's all that matters. The ability to perform, WELL. Study Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. He was a million times worse than Ozzy and maybe the worst ever. There is a lot of irony here, because a lot of the all-time hardest partying bands are still around and are still performing to very happy crowds, with 30-40-50 year careers.

I prefer the album version as you can really hear everything crisly and clearly every note is perfection in this the lyrics aren't great on some of the verses think that's why they changed it for the album version it's still great too Bill Ward is savage on those drums

It was originally called walpurgis, which is an anniversary to do with witchcraft and satanism. It was written by Geezer based on the book the Devil rides out and the lyrics reflect that. You can't find a Black Shabbath one I believe(bootleg maybe?) But Ozzy did a version of it on the album the Ozzman Cometh.

I really love where you guys go with your rambling analysis. You hit on so many important things and it's just fascinating. As someone who has played in bands my whole life, there is nothing like playing in a band where everybody gets along and on the music level is super tight. Just can read each other's minds, just in so many ways, super type. You can even play loosen in the pocket but there's an overall control and tightness to it that only comes with really knowing each other and being at least somewhat relaxed. It's the greatest thing about playing music live I think.

I am 66 years old and got Black Sabbath Paranoid in October 1970.An old metal head who even has a signed Black Sabbath cap.My Man Cave has 3 stereo systems shelves of vinyl records.I got the Sex Pistols record Bob Marley etc in the 1970,s also.I watch you regularly in New Zealand and I reckon both of you are bloody brilliant👍

It's so great to see these guys young and hungry, just tearing it up as hard as they can. Sabbath basically wrote these early songs on the road - and they are so tight!! I love this band so much!! I also love how out Couch Gang have such a fine appreciation for the Sabbs.
