Good luck mate. We are having a massive wet season which will make the barra fishing better later in the year. Hope you can make it.

Hey mate - what about the Zerek Live Shrimp? Just remove the weedless hook and put a normal jighead on? Works a treat down here and I thought it would be awesome for Barra and Jacks etc. up there. A group of us are coming back up to Weipa again in September next year - excited already.

G'day mate. I did a video on the Zerek Shrimps and included the jig head set up and absolutely they work great. That jig head really improves the hook up rate especially with a stinger treble. You gotta love Weipa.

what about spoons and other lure similar to them

G'day Liam. I've used spoons for queenfish and they work really well. I wouldn't put them on a must have list but they have their place. This is just the lures that I use all the time and with a lot of success. Most of the local boys here that I know use the same lures. I use curly tail plastics more than anyone else but the lures on the list cover everything you need up on the Cape. But we are always learning and I'd love to know what you think or what you have used. Wardy

hey matecheading up that way in April. What's the lightest braid and leader you take for fishing in the rivers. The guides all say 40lb braid and 60lb leader minimum

Gday Mark. I fish very light and think that’s crazy. My heaviest tackle is 20lb with 40lb leader. Most fish I catch is on 6lb with 25lb leader. That is very light but I’ve been doing that for years. In this video I’m using 12lb with a 40lb leader and think that is a happy medium.

I have to add that you’ll see me lose a heap of fish on the light tackle but it’s a compromise between losing a few but hooking up a lot more. I fish with so many mates that go heavy and they catch a few fish but I will often catch between 5 or 10 to their one. Baitcasting hardbodies for Barra in the snags is different and that is what most of the guides do or they go reef fishing so you’d want to go heavy there. Let me know if you want a video on baitcasting Barra in the snags or anything you think would be interesting and I’ll go film it. Make sure you say g’day while you’re in town. Wardy.

@@wardysfishing9403 Thanks Wardy. When I was up there in April last year we were fishing the Embley, Hey and the Mission. On a particularly quiet day in the Mission we were struggling a bit. Got a few undersized ones after we downsized the hard bodies but it was very slow. We ended up skipping little 3 inch zman minnows into the mangroves and I couldn't help thinking chucking a weedless plastic that small on 40lb braid with 40lb leader made it hard to cast and would limit the action. It was getting the nibs, but I reckon if I had lighter leader I could have caught a lot more. This year I will bring a lighter outfit as a back up. I am guessing you'd use a 3-5 kg rod or something?

100% mate. The plastic doesn’t cast as well, doesn’t swim as well and the current and wind creates so much drag on that thicker line that you don’t even feel the bites. Those little Barra are a heap of fun on light gear. I use a 1500 reel or the Alvey SR60 and yes, 3-5kg rod. Cheap shimano raiders are awesome for the price. The 25lb leader is as light as I go because of the rough mouths of the Barra. Everyone says it’s the sharp gill rackers but it’s the mouths when they suck down a soft plastic that gets you so light drags and easy does it and you’ll land almost all of them. I’ve even caught metre plus Barra in the snags on this gear. More luck than talent but I’ll take it.

@@wardysfishing9403 Last question and then I'll stop bothering you mate! What brand of 25lb leader do you use? The reason I ask is they are all different diameters etc. I understand if due to sponsorship you can't name brands... I'll owe you a couple of beers when I get up there thats for sure!
