I've been using the Kase Revolution Magnetic Filters for a little over six months now. In this video, I head to West Virginia to talk about the advantages of magnetic filters and some of the new features the Revolution line brings to landscape photographers.
The Kase Revolution Magnetic Filters help make things more efficient for landscape photographers in the field, which in turn leads to more time for creativity.
Also, don't forget to check out John Robertson Photography's KZfaq Channel!

Great video Jeffrey. I'm very happy with my Kase Wolverine system and haven't had any problems with magnet strength or even vignetting. The color coding is a nice improvement.....I have had to look at my ND filters after pulling them out of the case to make sure I have the right one. Thanks for the reference as well!

I have the Wolverines as well. They are the same glass as the new Revolutions right? So the only upgrade is the inlaid ring and color coding.

I have a question regarding the amount of vignetting at 14mm with a 82mm lens with 2 stacked filters: 1. inlay ring 82mm with 82mm filters and 2. stepup ring 95mm to 82mm with 95mm filters. Basically do you think we have less vignetting in setup 2 (event if the stepup ring is not that close to the lens as with the inlay ring) than in setup 1?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 7 күн бұрын
I have not tested a step-up ring from 82mm to 95mm filters, but I know most filter makers typically advise if you want *no* vignetting then they recommend the step-up ring setup you have in option 2. That should give you enough filter glass to photograph through to not get vignetting on even the widest setting. I just haven't done that setup. Hope that helps!

Thanks for video. Do you have problems removing inlaid ring if you need to? Is there any color cast with 10stops ND?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 5 ай бұрын
There is a tool for the inlaid ring, so it isn’t very difficult to remove. I feel like the color cast of the Revolutions might be a bit more than the Kase Wolverines, but I have not gone out to do a side-by-side test on color cast. It is on my list of videos to do - ultimately compare Kase Wolverine to Kase Revolution to MAVEN Filters.

The "difficulty" if you want to call it one is if you have filters stacked or with magnetic cap on and want to take the cap or second filter off, it tends to take all the filters off and then trying to separate them without fingerprinting one of them.....
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, it can take some fiddling to take the cap off or separate stacked filters. Definitely worth keeping a cloth near at hand for those occasional fingerprints. I think I lost more time (and definitely higher frustration levels) with stuck threaded filters!

Great video! Do you have magnetic step rings too? are there multiple magnetic lens caps that you keep on your lenses so you dont have to mess with putting a step up ring on them?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 8 ай бұрын
I have magnetic step-up rings on my other two lenses. So magnetic adapter on my 14-30 which has an 82mm filter thread, then a step-up ring on my 24-120 to take it to an 82mm filter size and same or my 100-400. And I did buy two more lens caps (82mm size) so all my lenses are ready for the filters or magnetic lens cap. Does that help answer the question?
@peligeustalos4141
@peligeustalos4141 8 ай бұрын
It does! so you'd have to get their lens caps and you couldnt use the ones that came with the lens originally right? do you feel like the lens cap itself is good quality?@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 8 ай бұрын
Correct - once you put the step-up ring on, you can't use the original lens cap. I think the lens caps are of good quality. I use them on my main trio of lenses I use for landscape photography. I do occasionally knock one off when removing a lens from my camera bag, but I keep my dividers in the bag pretty snug. I don't consider it problematic.

Hi, thx for the good Video. Is it possible to screw an inlaid ring direct to the adapter Ring to make it magnetic? And a second Ring on the Lens, to make the adapter Ring magnetic on both sides? I hope you understand what i mean.

I'm on the verge of buying the Kase system but I am having trouble getting my head around the kits, what they contain, and the buying advice on Kase's site I own 3 lenses Tamron 17-28, 28-75, 28-200. The Tamron lenses have a thread size 67mm. On the site, the recommended size of filter to buy would be 82mm along with a 67-82mm magnetic adaptor, which I get, to minimise vignettes. But what use would the 82MM Magnetic Lens Adapter and 82MM Inlaid Ring be unless I had an 82mm threaded lens? Looking at the compatibility chat only 3 lenses recommend buying the same size filter as the lens thread. This seems to be £44 of kit that I would have no use for. It would make far more sense, based on their own buying guide to produce kits of magnetic filters and then you could buy the additional adaptors/inlay/step up as required. You can't even buy the filters separately as they each come with an adaptor. Sorry if this came across as a bit negative, I would welcome any feedback, especially if I've totally missed the point of the magnetic adaptors and inlay rings.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 3 ай бұрын
Not negative at all! You've actually called out something I haven't really considered before. You are right, the manufacturers typically recommend stepping up as you've described to avoid any chance of vignetting. I've always prioritized keeping my kit as compact as one can and buy the filter size to match my biggest filter size. (So for me, it is my 14-30mm which uses an 82mm filter). And I do get some vignetting at 14mm, especially if I stack filters. But you are right - if you buy as recommended, the filter size up, you end up with a magnetic adapter and/or inlaid adapter ring that are of no use to you. It would be nice to see an option where when purchasing a kit you could choose the filter size and then whether you want the magnetic adapter and inlaid ring *or* if you want a step-up ring. I am not aware of that option being available - but would certainly be nice if it was. Not a lot of feedback really, I'd never considered this since I don't step-up my biggest filter size and hadn't really run into this issue. I think you have a valid point.

@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography I contacted Kase UK and they did propose a halfway solution. Buy a standard step-up ring for a quarter the price of a magnetic one and attach the inlay ring to it thus making it magnetic.

You should be good with that combination, this is from the FAQ on the Kase UK site: "Q: Can I use the Revolution Filters and Lens Caps on my existing Kase Magnetic Circular adaptors? A: Yes the Revolution Filters and Lens Cap will work with any pre-existing magnetic circular range adaptors you have from Kase. " Hope that helps!

I’ve used both and both are solid filters and happy having used them both. With that said, I was really impressed with the color accuracy of the ND filters I showed in my most recent MAVEN video (In the Field with MAVEN Filters). There was nearly no perceivable shift in color as I went from no filter, to 3-Stop ND, 6-Stop ND, or 10-Stop ND - that just makes editing a little easier in the end. With either of the filter brands, the magnetic and color coding are both things I almost require in a filter these days. Magnetic for the ease of use and color coding for helping grab the right filter or find which lens I left it on easily. With all that said, if I was buying my first set of filters, I’d look very seriously at MAVEN. Good folks too!

Can you use the filters with the lens hood that came with the lens?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 8 ай бұрын
If you need to use a step-up ring to adapt to the filter size, no - the lens hoods won't fit. I think the lens hood will fit if just using the inlaid magnetic adapter and not a step-up ring, but I am away from my lens that has that setup at the moment and can't 100% verify (I don't typically use lens hoods).
@Razertw
@Razertw 8 ай бұрын
I am able to use my Wolverine filters with the classic magnetic adapter (not the new inlaid ring) and use the original lens hood (and also the original lens cap) if I'm using the same size filter and the same size lens (in my case 77mm lens and 77m filters). It's very useful when shooting seascapes with wide angle close to the spray. The lens hood does help quite a bit. Once you use a step up ring to adapt to a smaller lens then it's a no go, which is a shame because I'm a big lens hood user and use one pretty much always, I don't see any reason no to apart from maybe saving some space in a bag.

Shouldn’t you buy a filter size of your largest lens and step down? I have lenses down to 52mm filter size. Should I get a 82mm and step down?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography Ай бұрын
Yes - I generally recommend going at least the filter size of your largest fitler size for your lenses then using adapters (I tend to call them step-up (i.e. going from lens to filter)). In my case, my largest filter thread size is 82mm - so that is the size of filter I buy. One word of caution. Technically, the major filter manufacturers recommend buying one size larger than your maximum and even using a step-up ring on that as well as it is the only true way to minimize vignetting. But - I don't like my filters to be too bulky, so I don't do that. I do get some vignetting (as shown in the video) since I don't size up. Hope that helps!
