In this video I will show you how you can make magnetic paint yourself. My tests show this might be the best magnetic paint one can make or buy currently, although I haven't tested commercial brands, but based on tests shown on KZfaq. I compare results of three different formulas: an alpha-iron mixture using fine particles, an alpha-iron mixture using bigger particles and a mixture using 1.5 mm iron shavings.

The general composition of ferrites is MeFe2O4, where Me is one or more of the divalent metals manganese, zinc, nickel, cobalt, copper, iron or magnesium. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_(magnet))

You are awesome, thank you for your video! You explained this very well and you made this very easy to understand. *cheers* I am going to go check out your "making a tumbler" video now, and probably sone others that you have made! :) (I subbed and liked, and will pass this on to my friends and family on other sites)! Thanks again.

thank you. it's apperant that the difficult part is to make the ferrile powder

Yes, although a tumbler lets you be hands-free, it's better to break up the ferrite with a hammer or something like one, because the finer powder isn't the best material. So you need patience if you are going to paint a big surface.

correct me if im wrong but i think if you take a magnet and a plastic bag you can collect your own from outside?

Thanks for your useful information Sir, I'd like to try it on my apartment walls (which are not allowed me to do any drilling) for some small decorations. I also have some basic questions and need your suggestion: about the ferric used, does it require purely ferric metal or any alloys can be used? And I'm also wondering if we can use the ferric chloride powder (the PCB etchant) instead? It's easy to find and dirt cheap. Sorry for my bad English. Once again thanks so much and best wishes for you 😀.

Hi Khánh. Well, I have only tested mashed ferrules (alpha-iron) so I don't know how those materials might behave. I can only suggest you do some tests as I show in the video, and observing that the bigger the particles might give a stronger surface (in terms of magnetic strength). On the other hand if the room has some molding just below the ceiling or a hole running all along the walls where they join the ceiling, you can use that to hang things, as you can see here: www.sinclavos.cl/artesindex.php

@@RODsDIY Thanks so much. I did some research and found out that FeCl3 is harmful for human so I think it's better to avoid it. I also found some ferric dioxide powder and planning to do some testings. In my case, it's not only about hanging things on walls but also for decoration and space saving purpose, magnetic painting is really a life saver.

Will this paint hold large fridge magnets???
@RODsDIY

What do you call a large fridge magnet? Those stuck to the figure of a Panda, or whatever, are usually made of magnetized ferrite or a similar compund, and are not strong enough on the surfaces I prepared with this paint. Maybe they would work with other paints, or with a variation of mine, but I can't vouch for that.
