Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey KZfaq channel!
My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.
Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my KZfaq channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

I agree with their statement. Most altercations are gonna start 1 of 2 ways. Someone's gonna try to punch you or someone's gonna try to grab you. Boxing is great when dealing with someone trying to punch you, but it's severely lacking when it comes to takedown defense.

What's the first thing you do in a fight? You can always create distance to stop someone from trying to take you to the ground. Two really good ones are boxing and Muay Tai. Both of those rely on punches first. Which answers my question. The first thing you do is throw a pumch
@jopalo31675

Yes and no. You have to be able to close the distance. With a good striker, that’s a problem. This idea that a boxer never grappled is not the case anymore. Here are 3 pro boxing champions with grappling skills. Bud Crawford is 36 years old and undisputed in 2 divisions. He’s a 3x state wrestling champ. Regis Prograis is a black belt in BJJ and Rolly Romero is a judo black belt with 10 years experience in Judo. The idea of the pure striker or grappler is over with.

@jopalo31675 I agree that the idea of a pure Striker overrated, but you're forgetting the original question, "How well does boxing work for self-defense?". A boxer with grappling skills is the highest S-tier in my opinion. But they're not talking about that.

Boxing is more than enough to drop normal dudes out there with ease. I get that if a boxer runs into a mma fighter, muay thai fighter, or even BJJ specialist, the boxer might be at disadvantage of being one dimensional. But I have never seen a street fight where both are trained fighters, most of them are just average people with no training experiences.

Boxing trains you to take hits like nothing else except Muay Thai. Although boxing gyms also tend to attract nutcases who spar hard almost every session. Every person I've met who seriously trained in boxing was very tough but also a bit crazy. Probably makes them more ready for self defense compared to someone who trains martial arts as a hobby, but that can be said of anyone who takes their martial training seriously. I'd say if we're talking of singular, pure martial arts without mixing it up, judo is one of the best for self defense, since it involves throws from an upright standing position and manipulation of clothing. Also, every judoka ranked First Kyu or above that I have sparred with was built like a marble statue with inhuman grip strength.

Unlike competitions, in a real fight there's a lot more pulling, pushing and grabbing while throwing haymakers in the middle so it's very necessary to know some grappling like elementary judo or sambo even if you don't learn jui-jutsu. Last thing you want in a street fight is to be on the ground. Oh and elbows and knees are the most effective in fights like this. Normally untrained people try to rush in, close the distance and punch you but if you can get in a clinch, its very effective at ending fights

Boxing is B+. Most of attacks will be wild punches. Kicking is dificut in jeans. Ground fighting is complicated on concrete. Sometimes the space is limited, but you can find a punch. Add some kick checking and takedown defense and you are done.

Boxing is most valuable for its training mindset, for certain. The techniques are sound, but if you're ungloved you don't want to punch like a boxer too often. It'll work, but you're liable to injure your hand frequently fighting like that ungloved. Worth it to save your life, obviously, but if you can apply a boxer's training mindset to a more varied system I'd say you should.

I think the worst part about boxing is that you can have a false confidence about how menacing and strong you are... but you could argue that is the same case with every other MA... however most boxers live their life like they are the toughest shit you can find. MMA guys can be violence junkies, but since they are training in a complete way most of them will be chill in most situations, since they will ACTUALLY KNOW many things can go against your plans in a confrontation.

@@TommytwotimesTightlips Im not shitting on boxing, im shitting on some boxing fanatics. Boxing is great, awesome. You learn footwork (though you will have to change it quite a bit if you intend to kick), to throw all sorts of punches... and if you are actually good, to dodge them (im not going to include "taking them" as a skill though it could be valid). But if you ask on a boxing gym "can you fight" ? Most people will say yes, and they don`t know how to fight... they know how to punch , which is only one side of fighting. This conception that you know how to fight because you could punch someone that doesnt know how to fight either to unconsciousness or death is a bit silly, do you get me ? What you DO know is how to punch and move around a ring. Boxers can be great people, and boxing is a marvelous art, pointing the flaws in a martial arts is the only way to make it better.

I'm gonna put it like this from a Londoner. On the streets of London, would you rather an old fashioned pistol or a glock? In a 1 on 1, the old pistol is good enough in a group of people with knives, The pistol loses now and changes it to a glock. The point is with mma. You have a higher chance of survival in a street fight than if you wouldn't have had previous knowledge or had limited knowledge.

Notice how two of them wanted to either take you to the ground or kick you? I think both Ryan Hover and Jesse Kemp said it best, "don't let them take you to the ground, or go to the ground". I'm paraphrasing. To me it goes Boxing, Muay Tai, and wrestling. Those three forms are badass. All three show a level of toughness that's needed in a street fight. You see a guy that looks like his eyebrows are kinda swollen or a person with cauliflower ear? You might want to rethink fucking with them

Id say most martial arts lack in some capacity. With boxing its kicks (especially to the leg) and grappling. With something like bjj its striking. But combine the 2 and you got a formidable fighter. So i think a question thats more fun to try to answer is: what 2 martial arts would you combine? (Keeping it to 2 cause realistically unless your job is fighting 1 class was already taking up most of your time). Some combinations seem redundant, like kung fu + karate, but others would produce some scary mfs, like sambo + muay thai

So, there are two many other fighting systems to put boxing anywhere near the top because I know there are many fighting systems that can destroy the boxer... 52 blocks a boxing skill on a completely different level of boxing that was developed in prison which is very effective... So the question is, how well skilled is the individual that's the reality of the issue...

On the street, your attacker will most likely pick a smaller target, they won’t pick on people their size or bigger. So you will likely be outsized. If your training is in boxing, even if you have a year of training under your belt, you will struggle against a bigger thug if you are just going to stand in front of him and try to trade shots. However someone with a year of wrestling or jiu jitsu would have more success I believe against a bigger but likely lesser skilled opponent. They can slip a punch and take the fight to to e ground where the opponent will be less skilled. Even a few lessons of jiu jitsu gives you so much more knowledge than someone with zero experience.

But boxers use footwork and head movement to create angles, change elevations, and move around an opponent for superior positions. Who’s to say that a boxer, when attacked by a bigger guy who wants ti punch them, wouldn’t slip and punch their attacker in the groin or solar plexus, as opposed to doing a takedown? And that’s without mentioning guards, hand fighting, and clinching in boxing. Boxing isn’t about standing and banging, it’s about hitting and not getting hit.

Just learn MMA. You can punch, kick, elbow and take down. Thus, making you prepared for most kind of attack. Not with weapon tho. For that, we run.

Yea wrestling is usefull when fighting one on one. But what if you get jumped by 2 or 3 guys and you cant run? What are you gonna do a fakin leg lock??? Then stand up double leg takedown to another and an armbar to the last??? I dont think so.

All these self proclaimed fighters are influencers, to call them experts is an insult to martial arts, they may be experienced but they aren’t experts, Boxing is Good for self defence, they’re talking about what? Low kicks? Elbowing? Look I don’t know what crack they’re on but nobody and I mean NOBODY who is untrained is using a low kick or anything like that effectively in a street fight, wanna know why? THEY’RE UNTRAINED, if you’re in a street fight fighting someone who is trained and can throw kicks, what the fuck are you doing?

I was adding just 1 style of grappling to simplify. But yeah agreed. But you don't need to be an mma fighter to defend against 90% on the street.

Boxing is the best for self defence from an efficiency to time perspective. 2months of boxing compared to any other martial art will be sufficient for the average person who do a great deal of damage to another human being.

I’ve worked in bars for the last 25 years, and 99.9% of the fights I’ve seen are standing, punching. When one guy gets tired or is drunk they may try to tackle you, but that’s it. No flying kicks or any of that shit. In the real world, its fists. 🤜
