Was going to mention the similarity between the German-style sallet and bevoir, and Imperial artillery armour too.

I made that assumption too but if you look at the AA guncrews on US WW2 ships you can see the occasional guy in a big oversized helmet (probably with headphones under it). Given that most of the movie was directly influenced by WW2 footage I'd say that was the Morely likely connection. -I was actually thinking about the rebel helmets in the start of the film 😅 though I think the Imperial helemts have a samurai base?

Good point! I forgot about those WWII Navy Mark 2 Talker helmets. I saw a video recently about those. The Navy helmets didn't have visors, though, like the Rebel Fleet Trooper helmets and Matt's sallets do. Perhaps Ralph McQuarrie was drawing from a combination of visual influences!

According to the obsessive folks of Rebel Legion and the 501st, both Aldaraanian ("Rebel") and Death Star Crew helmets are based on the USN Talker Helmet MkII, the props being vacuum-formed off a real helmet with the Alderaanian helmets having extra greebles attached to make them look different. There are similarities of course but I think this is more a case of form-follows-function. Now, if you look at Mr. McQuarrie's original art for the Rebel Troopers, those come down over the face with a clear visor and have very, very strong "sallet" vibes.

As for your question, look up bascinet helmets, they are pretty much what you describe (straight back sallet) and they often had visors, so combos did exist.

The bevors only protect the front, the long tail protects a opponent from using a bill or halberd to hook or lacerate the back of your neck.

@@PJDAltamirus0425 Also worth mentioning, a mail standard (collar) is essential for proper function of the sallet. Unlike the bascinet which often came with a mail aventail, the sallet has no such thing and so even the tail leaves part of the back of your neck exposed. The combination is still lighter than a bascinet plus aventail though.

In a sallet, when worn visor down, there are two fields of vision. What you see from the slit (in front of you) and what you see below the rim (the terrain you are walking on). The lower part of face cover protruding allows to have a larger field of vision when looking below the rim without reducing the frontal one or the protection. It also reduces the possibility, for a blade's hit on the lower part of the face cover, to be directed into the slit.

Moderately. Obviously having a slot to see through is always going to limit your vision compared to not having a visor in front of your face.

So that things falling out of the sky glance off and don't hit your neck. Arrows, rocks thrown from walls or catapaults, and of course the swords and axes of cavalry all come from above. It's the same reason WW1 era helmets had big brims, and for that matter why the hardhats worn by people building sky-scrapers or working in mines have a similar shape.

I used to as well, but I have been convinced by the evidence to change to sal-let. It seems the most likely way most English people said it at the time.

Firearms were already a thing when sallets became popular. They were very popular with handgunners as the archer design translates perfectly with its light weight and open face. If you think about it, the archer sallet is also the most similar helmet in shape to the modern stereotypical soldier's helmet. So the design still works well, we just lacked the materials to allow it to keep up with firearms until recent decades.

London mainly. There are numerous royal edicts about London armourers, and the imported armour not being allowed to use London armourer's marks (so that was obviously being done, to elevate the prices). It seems that the most expensive armour in England was often the English made stuff, and by the mid-15th century the imported Italian and Flemish armour was in general cheaper (and lots of it was 'munition' grade). However, there were top quality Italian armours imported also - famously by Richard III himself.

Yes, but they were very common in just about everywhere else at the same time so that's like saying "are helmets typical of Allied uniforms" for WWII. You should look up the sallets which are neither German nor Milanese style - some places like England or Iberia favored pointed tops on their sallets. Some favored half visors, others full visors.

early WW1 helmets are quite interesting things. and it seems like like the M16 ended up being adopted over the allied helmets, in the modern NATO world

@@beepboop204 : Britisch and lesser Audrain/ Adrian (?) helmets are Eisenhut/ kettle hat, so also a medieval type of helmet.

....no, the M16 is made with an other medieval helmet in mind, the specific typ of "Eisenhut" (kettle hat) helmet worn by foot soldiers and very popular in Germany in the 14. and 15. century....
