Next, Mr.Jim Rubino, from Rubino's Music in Merrillville Indiana convinced me that what I needed was the Digitech GSP-5. It was way out of my league, budget wise, but Mr.Rubino saved the day by introducing me to layaway. A year later, that GSP-5 was mine. I used the "Eddie Van Halen" preset but I still didn't sound like my heroes. It wasn't until I was in my 40's when I took a step back and peaked over my mountain of gear and realized it was practice that made me sound like my heroes. My early dedication to leaning remains apparent, but the quest for the perfect tone always ends in the laziness of my practice routine. Chasing that dream around the country was fun, using big loud amps is always fun.., but these little bedroom amps seriously kick ass! They capture the essence of much higher valued gear; at least close enough to properly steer good decision making in which amp to save up for, while providing quite impressive range and fairly accurate representation of the tonal character of the model being emulated. These little amps serve a much underappreciated purpose; to inspire the creativity and imagination of the next innovator enough to follow that dream to wherever it leads. Isn’t the size of the speaker/cabinet always the limitation of an ENTRY level amplifiers. I have put output jacks on my small practice amps like the Marshall Lead 20 or 40 watt mini amp . I have even done it with my Pignose battery powered amp. Once you plug them into a 4/12 cabinet, look out they freaking scream. The tone is SO MUCH BETTER when you put the output through a quality set of 12” speakers. Of course the output jacks cut the speaker in the cabinet of the amp off when you plug the external cabinet in. It’s the speaker size/quality, I think more than the cabinets of the little amps that makes their tone cheesy but the cabinet size does affect the low end a lot. The bigger the cab the better bass tone
@wesleyzimmerman942 жыл бұрын

Really cool how it has a usb. Growing up, I used to have to wait for my parents to leave the house to record my riffs, and even then, it was a terrible room recording using the mic that came with the computer. This is direct-in. All they need is to download reaper or audacity and they're good to start writing riffs. Although, I can't help but think about how times have changed since I owned a practice amp like this. VSTs are great, most computers can handle the processing power now, and a laptop and an interface is smaller profile than a practice amp. (assuming where you're going has powered speakers) Also the Friedman BE mini is only $50 more and while it doesn't have as many features, it's a better amp long term. Not too forget you have more versatility with being able to choose a guitar cab and the speaker inside it right from the start. (even if that's more cost upfront) That being a more old school approach instead of just getting a VST and using a preset so you don't have to think about it. Too many options now, personally I think peavey needs to put that 12" speaker back in or maybe continue further into the audio interface realm. Something even smaller than this that is an audio interface first, practice amp second could actually be pretty cool and probably more future proof.

I'm currently using a TINY little VOX practice amp and utilizing the "acoustic" setting for my mic and it doesn't sound bad at all minus the fact that it's completely lacking in bass response and volume due to its TINY size. 🤔

I'm glad you finally did the review of this Vypyr. I'm deciding between the X2 and X3, is there a better amp you'd suggest in their price range? $4-500?

Boss katana

A Boss katana would do. I'd suggest the X2 which sounds better than the X1
@Manicsar12 жыл бұрын
You should try the X2 or X3 and you can connect your iPad to it via bluetooth and tweek it. I picked up the X2 and sold my pedals and works well.

Hi Ola, i have been really looking forward for a review of vypyr x series from you. Im just wondering that if you can compare x2 and boss katana 50 mk2. Nearly same size, same budget and brown channel looks like kind of 6505 emulation according to some people. Thanks!

When i Start playing guitar in 1982 i was poor ! could not Buy a Marshall and Buy Peavey for the métal hard rock sound and the Peavey X1 is good for électric guitar ,good for bass ,and acoustic guitar ,for praticicing at home! Plug and Play !

The tube Vypyrs were sick af, Idk why they got rid of em
@Keshro2 жыл бұрын
Probably because tubes are now hard (and really expensive) to get and they want to use tubes for higher end amps.

Interesting effects for bass? Or perhaps clean guitar? Keyboards? Turn off the internal noise gate, and use a pedal, apparently its much better for metal guitar tones.
@jrg7702 жыл бұрын
I have a Vyper VIP 3. The encoder knobs failed, so you have to twist them for a good minute before they work properly. The internal effects are terrible. The delay and reverb are fine (and available on each patch) but the modulation and other stuff is just terrible. I modded mine to add a speaker out for hooking up a cab and also I added a FX loop. Unfortunately these amps have the preamp and the fx section modeled and sent to the power section so, the FX loop means you cant use the built in reverb and delay because they feed into the fx loop. Also the recording out via usb or the headphone jack comes before the fx loop. But overall the amp models sound good. \m/

Hell of a lot better than my first amp, a 15 watt crate.

I have 2 hooked in stereo to my pedal board twin H9’s, Metal Zone, generic noise gate, vox wah, cry baby wah and the wonderful Whammy pedal!! Can use the board mixed with amp effects and they sound great!!

Not the x the VIP 1 and 2 ! If you put a sheet of cardboard over the back of the little guy ( don’t know why the made it completely open) it actually sounds fantastic!! I tried an actual piece of plywood lol but the cardboard worked better!! Wish I could share the tones I’ve gotten.. Using a 7 string with 10-62’s ! Bang!!

I got the x3 a couple of months ago and within 2 months the speakers had already popped, traded it for a spark, much nicer in my opinion as a practice amp and honestly for gigs too, just need to get a cab

I can dig this. Sounds good and looks sinister ;) Could go on about Peavey since i've been a brand fan since the '70s and owned a few of their amps (Mace, SP112) but now have a Vypyr 15 i bought almost 10 years ago used at GC for $49.95. Still surprises me. There's some vid called "abandoned Peavey Factory" or something. Pretty heartbreaking. I guess all MIC now,,,,not sure.

Nah for metal and overall good at everything., I would still highly recommend boss katana, sounds ferrous when you install sneaky amps pack. Actual useful and good sounding effects ( this Peavy has pretty aweful sounding and useless effects) there's a reason 9/10 amps sold if this price point is a katana, it just kicks ass and does everything well. The katana needs a little TLC for modern metal sound with the global eq but it will get there easily and better than most

yo bro I'm planning on getting a boss katana mk2, is it good for trash, death metal, and other metal genres, that heavy shit u know, and also is it possible to connect it to the pc to use amp sims, I've heard it has like an built in audio interface right?

...also have a Vypyr 30 12" (many years older), and sometimes it sounds BETTER than this one (I have an X2), just depends on what you are looking for, I have them stacked one on top of the other 🤷♀

Hey Ola, between this and the Positive Grid Spark amp, which is better, as far as a practice amp for metal goes? In your opinion, that is?
@ryant36002 жыл бұрын
I had a Spider like 30 watt I think way back in like 03/04' I think, then a couple years later, I sold that and got the original Vypyr 30 Watt w/ the Sampera 2 pedal which was a lot better, I lived the Rectifier setting on that one, got some good chuggage out of it. But I sold that amp, but kept the pedal board and got the Vypyr VIP 2. But, I prefer the original one over the VIP cause they took away the rectifier amp on the VIP 2, which I didn't know that till I got it home. Which sucks. I still use them from time to time, but anymore I play through my headrush boards. I have the MX5, cause I travel every month for work, so it fits right in my carry on and is light weight. And then I have my big headrush at the house. But I agree the Vypyr's are great beginner or bedroom type player amps.

I would not trade my Peavey Rage 258 for a Vypyr: The Rage has not "epipletic" pulsing leds nor liquid effects: it is very minimal just how I like it, yeah. Yet I have to try it with my BBD Behringer delay. Yeah, my analog solution for the me wanna be "poor" guitarist, you know! :-D .I'm fond of how this amp of mine sounds. And it suits my minimal style too.
