Great video Ben! Im so excited to hear you use Shungite water & write “Love” on the outside of your container. I did the rice/water experiment with my 10 yr old and although it may sound out there, it is sooo true! “Love” rice has remained white & beautiful while the “sad/helpless” container is literally black with rot 3 months later. So in other words, “Don’t forget to add the love figgers!” 😊

The beauty of this method, which you initially joked about as the "lasagna" method, is that by planting the cuttings horizontally, you are giving the future fig tree a much firmer base, as they do in construction, a more solid foundation, if you will... However, I would not place the cuttings so close together at the beginning, but leave serious space for each root to develop independently in "the lasagna pan"... Also, I would make a 1" long superficial, vertical, almost surgical incision (or slit) on one side of each of the final cuttings, barely involving the surface of the bark and the cambium cell layer (like a paper cut in your finger) and place that final fig cutting with this incision downwards... This would promote many more shootings in the rooting system and their chances to grab more substantially and heavily to their environment... And your chances to plant fig trees on steep hills... And avoid being washed up by rains... Just saying...

Ben, Just watched your video and was surprised that you were able to root 2" long cuttings with only one node. I have learned so far that a cutting needs to have three or four nodes at least for a good chance of rooting. It would definitely save me some money if I could cut the expensive cuttings I bought into two or three pieces. With the thirty some cuttings you put in for rooting how many rooted that finally made it to healthy plants? Enjoy watching your fig videos; have learned a lot from your experience. Thanks.

+Sata Giuricici no just leave them indoors where the temps are warmer. After 2 months if you do not see leaves I would start digging in to see whats going on, there should be plenty of roots. There maybe some that have the leaves growing down and not up.

Hi Ben great video. I dont really care about getting the maximum amount out of cuttings so i am wondering what is the maximum size i can use to grow from a cutting? only asking is my neighbor is cutting down his fig tree as its too close to his house. Past couple years it has produce some amazing fruit so i want to get a few trees out of this before it goes! do you think i can propagate a big branch? like a metre or 2 in lenght?? thanks!
@BenBSeattle
@BenBSeattle 8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely yes. I've tried rooting something as big as my arm but it did not work out. The worms got it first and the top dried out. If you are rooting a large caliber branch your better off burying the entire thing in the fall and letting mother nature do its thing.

You shouldn't have to wash and scrub rafiqua11 and Andres F. In Nature that never happens. The Permaculture experts would probably say just to plant in a rich soil environment with lots of compost in the fall - not that I have researched it. But I know enough about Permaculture to know that you ge more production if you emulate nature rather than to try to reinvent what is already perfect.

Nice video. I like your method. Funny about the Emoto ideas. Of course, its not scientific. Emoto was personally invited to take the One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge by James Randi in 2003, and would have received US$1,000,000 if he had been able to reproduce the experiment under test conditions agreed to by both parties. He did not participate, of course. In fact none of the supernatural claims of any party, ever--have ever been shown to be real. But as you say, it does not hurt. :)
