Every podcaster and many KZfaqrs seem to have heard of the Shure SM7B. It's labeled as a legendary vocal microphone so how does it sound and do you really need a Cloudlifter to make it sound great? The good news is you can get the same, if not better performance, with a Shure SM7B using a dbx 286s and the settings you'll see in this microphone review and dbx tutorial video!

Hi Mike, I can't thank you enough for all these great detailed videos that you've produced. Just Amazing! After I finally setup my Studio using my Shure SM7B > Cloudlifter CL-1 > DBX 286x > DBX 215s > DBX 166xs > MOTU M2 USB Interface > MacPro (Hackintosh), I decided to follow all the same settings WITH and WITHOUT the Cloudlifter. I found out that when I compared it with your settings WITHOUT the Cloudlifter and then WITH the Cloudlifter with my settings, the one with the Cloudlifter had a much richer, robust, cleaner sound. Now mind you, you were correct, that if you were to choose between the Cloudlifter and the DBX 286x that the DBX 286x would be the better choice. But, since I already had the Cloudlifter, I figured I'd use it and it does sound a WHOLE LOT BETTER. Some may think that's overkill, but they won't know unless they try it. It's really worth having. Again, thanks for the great vids and ALL your help!

After i see your four DBX's i thinking to build some similar set. Is cloudlifter is needed there? Would it be enough to assemble a set of that four such DBXs and connect them to my Sacarlett? My first DBX286s lasted 2 years, then the sound went all distorted and it died. I bought another one, and it quit after a year and a half -- 600 bucks, gone. Now I just use the SM7B with a Cloudlifter, and tweak a bit in post, and I am way happier. I enjoyed the DBX strips while they lasted, but would only consider another if I really needed to adjust my sound "live". I wish you better luck with it.

You can get the dbx 286s direct from the manufacturer. For my KZfaq live videos I use a dbx 286s for each microphone, the output from those goes to my Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK mixing desk, the output from that to a dbx 215s equaliser, then to a dbx166xs processor and then to a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 which is what feeds the stream audio.

@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 3 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on what you’re intended use is. There’s nothing wrong with shotgun mics but most voiceover artists use large diaphragm condenser mics with a cardioid pick up pattern. You can also get some large diaphragm mics that have selectable hyper-cardiod pick up patterns as well. If you’re looking to do a lot of outdoor recording and want to “channel” the sound and eradicate as much of the background noise as possible then a shotgun may be your answer.

@MikeRussell
@MikeRussell 2 жыл бұрын
Nearly all mics, this one included have what's called proximity effect. This means that if you pull away from the microphone you'll lose some of the lower end of your voice. You would have this to consider. Also the further away from the mic you are the higher the gain and the more likelihood of picking up background noise which you don't want. The SM7B is very good at rejecting background noise under normal circumstances. I would say you could do what you want with this mic but you may also want to look at a shotgun mic which is designed for exactly what you want to do.

There are videos on adding vocal effects to change voices. If you're looking for an absolute cloan of someone else's voice that won't be easy as you'd have to match every frequency in the voices using many layers of EQ and you'd also have to get the person recording the voice to read the script with exactly the same pace, energy and style.
