Set amidst lush apricot and apple orchards, Nimmu House stands as a testament to Ladakhi heritage. It was constructed in the early 1910s by Zildar Rinchen Namgyal, a relative of Ladakh's king. With its authentic Ladakhi architecture, the three-story building has undergone meticulous restoration by a dedicated team of experts, reviving its former glory using traditional methods. Today it stands out as a beautiful property.
During our Ladakh food tour, we were graciously hosted here by Vikram and owner Namgyal, immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Ladakhi culture and cuisine. Our journey began with a tour of the farm, which supplies the fresh produce for the meals served at Nimmu House. Next we sipped on apple cinnamon iced tea crafted by server Sher Singh, made from farm-fresh apples, followed by apricot salsa toast prepared by Chef Rohit, featuring the ripe apricots plucked moments before.
As we relished herbed baby carrots, potatoes and garden fresh salad, Vikram provided insights into the essence of Nimmu House, deeply rooted in Ladakhi traditions. After this we once again joined Chef Rohit in the makeshift outdoor kitchen to prepare kholak, a simple yet hearty dish made from barley flour and tea decoction. Anubhav tried his hand at crafting momos, finely blending onions, carrots, soya chunks and seasonings for a flavorful filling.
After a delightful village tour led by Mr. Samphal Ji, we joined Mr. Namgyal for a traditional Ladakhi feast. From the comforting warmth of namthuk soup to the hearty flavors of kholak and thangtur, the spread included veg and chicken mok mok, and skyu, offering a glimpse into the culinary heritage of Ladakh. For dessert we had the fried apricot jam mok mok that delighted our taste buds.
To cap off our experience, Namgyal Ji graciously led us on a tour of his ancestral home, providing a fascinating glimpse into Ladakhi culture and tradition, enriching our understanding of this enchanting region.
