I think it's just a matter of time before (more) people realize how surprisingly good SRAM's entry level brakes - DB8's really are. For the price of one "high end" brake, you can get a complete set of DB8s and the same performance.
(my opinion)

I'm planning to upgrade mine with SRAM HS2 rotors and some sintered metal pads for a bit more control at the beginning of the brake contact. The stock Centerlines, while effective as they are, tend to warp easily and make an intermittent sound when the warped portion of the rotor hits the pad. The thicker HS2 rotors will also shorten the freestroke of the levers. I don't need to show brand loyalty. I have Shimano Deore M6120 brakes as well with RT86 rotors and sintered metal pads, which is as powerful a brake as you can get from Shimano (that isn't a Saint) and the DB8 has the same amount of stopping power with much more modulation.

Thanks for this! I’m going to follow suit and do the same to get even better performance out of these brakes.

It’s a great upgrade; I’ve swapped out my centerlines with 220mm hs2’s, and the organic pads with sintered galfer’s on my DB8’s. The result is added breaking power with the same modulation:) I’ve experienced the same warping on the centerlines’s too. It drove me nuts😂

These came on my trek rail.....I would say they are very underrated. It's similar to the Shimano m6120 brake set. Super great, set and forget type system. I did add 223/203 rotors. I would recommend them

I agree, they're great brakes for the price. Honestly with centerline rotors (203mm front, 180mmback) with resin pads, they lacked some power on steepest 'enduro level' descents on my Nukeproof Scout. I swapped Centerline rotors for Shimano SLX, replaced resin pads with semi-metallic. With this 'hack' these brakes became kinda "dh monster" while retaining good modulation. I was so satisfied with the result I bought another pair of DB8's on sale for 150€, put them on fs bike (replaced 4-piston Tektros). Combined with Tektro rotors, 'monster power' was present from the start even with resin pads. So far no leaks, overheats or failures on both bikes in 2 seasons. Lever feeling is still firm, didn't bleed them yet.

These brakes surprised me too. My Canyon Neuron 6 2022 came with them. As I had previous experience with SRAM Guide I thought such cheap brakes will disappoint too but they are quite decent. I see them now discounted in bike-discount for € 89,99 so they are even cheaper. BTW, SRAM just announced their top model brakes - Maven. These are also using mineral oil. Probably DB8 were a proof of concept before they announce Mavens.

You may be right about proof of concept. And you’re definitely right about the discounts… seeing them for $89 in the US also

Agree - I have these on regular bike and liked them from the first ride. I notices just a slight underpower during hardest descents but otherwise everything with these is ok. Have no intentions to change them for something more expensive.

Those are good brakes and a deal. Another amazing brake that is more powerful and has a way better lever feel then the TRP DHR EVO is the Magura MT5 four piston with the HC1 lever. $150 a side on Jensen UsA.

Heard good things about Magura’s in terms of stopping power but the maintenance is a little finicky? Doesn’t that sound about right?

@@MILTONATOR yes you are correct it can be. My current bike came with Shimano SLX four piston with a 220 front and 203 rear with Steele pads. They work pretty good and I am stoked on SLX it is good stuff.

Agree, they are great :-) Only issue is that when the brake pads go under limit, the lever goes too close to the handlebar. One more thing, easy to get brake pads (normal ones).

Thanks for this little review. I want to build a budget park bike and I think these could be perfect for it. I was thinking of magura mt5 but I have the mt4 on my xc bike and I love the feel but working on them, especially bleeding is an absolute pain in the ass. They just don't have a decent oil reservoire on the levers like shimano or sram. So they have to be bled really precizely.

Would you compare these to Shimano XT brakes? I’m glad to hear that SRAM is going away from DOT brake fluid.
@MILTONATOR
@MILTONATOR 5 ай бұрын
It’s been a few years since I last rode XT’s but I think I’d be in the ballpark in saying that the DB8’s aren’t as quick to bite like the XT’s. They have more modulation like all SRAM brakes. And I agree, i also like working with mineral oil more than dot

The mt5 are not as powerful as the db8, if you have the same brand metallic pads in them, I own both sets and I've had mt7's... The DB8 are definitely more "powerful" aka less lever effort than the mt5's.

I have a Shimano Deore M6120 on my hardtail and the SRAM DB8 on my full squish. It's much easier to modulate the DB8. Overall braking power is exactly the same (powerful enough to make you OTB.) Neither of the brake models leak. Shimano has the edge in maintenance because its bleed kits are very widely used. Otherwise, I prefer the DB8 for speed control as opposed to the Deore which is great for instant stopping.
