I'm a blacksmith and I can tell you the harder a steel is the easier it is to cut with a angle grinder. that chain I could cut a link out and bypass the lock in 30 seconds. if you want to mess up a angle grinder attack you need something soft to gum up the blade. Kevlar is very good, they use it in chainsaw safety trousers to foul the blade and it'll do the same on grinder disks

Some thoughts when using chains. Don't just put them through the wheel and lay the chain on the floor, thieves will lift the bike with the chain still attached into the back of their van and be gone in a few minutes. Chains on the floor give perfect leverage for bolt cutters, keep chains off the floor, route them through the frame, then the wheel. If you have a ground fitting in the garage fix it to the wall so the chain is off the floor when fitted to the bike. Chain bikes to each other through framework not through the wheels on the floor.

Don't lock only one wheel, it's a lot more difficult to move a bike when both wheels are locked
@drumbrakes
@drumbrakes 4 жыл бұрын
PeterS, That's great advice, but hard to follow. A lot of bikes just don't have a suitable frame gap for a chain to go through. It's something I wish manufacturers would think about when they design them to start with. If you use a thinner chain, it's easier to get through the frame, but then it's easier to cut. I use alarmed disc locks in addition to chains ( or cables when travelling), in the hope that any attempt to attack the chain will set off the alarm before the chain can be cut.
@keyboarddancers7751

I like the 'layered' approach. I keep my three push bikes in a quiet covered area outside the house and I use various chain and cable locks; I've noticed the covers have been moved without my permission on two occasions over the past ten years. The thieves saw the cables and chains and just walked on. Thieves are wary of cameras and movement sensitive lights and alarms too. They hate hassle; give them hassle!!

One other very simple little security measure i take is to cover my bikes in old sheets / blankets etc so if anyone is passing when the garage door is open they won't see any shiny new metal that might tempt them. They also won't see any of the security measures i have in place protecting the bikes so won't be able to plan ahead for what to deal with. A case of what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't yearn for. It also keeps the dust off. I'm not sure on trackers, its a lot of expense and agg to help when the bike has been stolen. I use chains and ground anchors in the hope that i can stop the bikes being stolen in the first place. I also use a natty device which locks the brake lever closed and prevents the front wheel from moving. Its impossible to try and ride off with it in place like you might with a disc lock and is very quick and easy to use.

Bikes are very often picked up by the handlebars by thieves and rolled on their back wheels. Disk locks on rear disks (as well as front) are a very good idea. Place the lock so that it’s necessary to unlock it through the wheel between the spokes. Don’t leave it sticking out in the breeze, that’s just an invitation to attack. Locking the back wheel with a chain and a disk lock is a double deterrent and a double disincentive. The best affordable locks to use with chains are good quality shutter locks. Link chains over the seat if you can’t get it through the frame. Never lay chains on the ground. Put CCTV cameras behind windows pointing at the street, as well as high up out of reach outside. They act as a great deterrent.

Excellent vid as always. I find it odd that people will spend the best part of 20k on a bike and then pull a face at spending a little bit more on added security. Once you have it, it will be there for any subsequent bikes, so you only buy once and is often way less that the insurance excess you'll be paying if your bike gets nicked. It should be a right faff to get your bike out and ready for a ride, time is your friend! If it takes you a few minutes to unlock your bike and remove any security, it's going to take that long, or longer for any scumbag to do the same, something they don't like. Even if you have one big lock and chain, adding some extra security in the form of a few cheap disc locks that can now be had for little money will slow them down, or better still have them thinking this is to much like hard work and have them moving on.

My last bike was stolen by cutting through a d lock, a disc lock and a19mm chain with an angle grinder, lifting the bike out past where it was blocked in by a van and then finding and removing the biketrac tracker. The last layer of the onion is the insurance company which will pay out when all else fails (once I mailed them all the keys to the multiple security devices and the photo of the 19mm chain link cut in half). And Trevor all the personal protection in the world won't help if they do all this while you aren't there. I've chased off thieves by shining a maglite before, it's when I don't get there in time all this is needed.

Don’t ask, but one of the channels KZfaq has recommended to me was The Lockpicking Lawyer. After watching a few of his videos you realise that all locks are pickable. It’s a matter of tools, technique and time. And it’s time that really matters. The more expensive you make it in terms of time, the less likely you are to have your bike stolen. Your bits of security kit will require a considerable amount of time to overcome, unless one is silly with the keys... This was, as usual, an excellent video and very informative. Thank you. Just out of interest, you did not mention a product/method such as Datatag as another possible layer of defence. Is this because you have to stop somewhere or such schemes are not value for money or that they are easily overcome?

I didn't mention all the security measures I personally use for obvious reasons! I do use Datatag too as it happens, amongst other measures....and agree, as I said at the start, nothing is completely secure, it's all about making things as difficult/awkward as possible for the bad guys...

Lockpicking is the least likely method that a thief will use to nick a bike, it's one thing to sit at home with the right tools and a bit of knowledge and pick locks successfully but it's an entirely different matter to do it at night, on you knees and under stress, in the street or even in a garage.

Problem is, your bike might end-up in, say, Brazil - where nobody will know what an alpha dot is. Smart thieves ship a bike out of area unfortunately - especially nice ones. A great idea but don't rely on it - maybe as one layer to the onion as m'man says.

Great Video TMF! Love the barrier 👌 I use Pragmasis for chains/locks etc. They do an excellent device called the “Anti Pinch Pin” it’s perfect for the GS as it goes through the hole on in the drive shaft and just uses a padlock on the other end so takes a matter of seconds to unlock your bike, rather than feed chain through a wheel or frame etc 👍

Great advice, I'm new to biking and have to keep my bike in the front garden, I use an oxford monster disc lock on the front wheel and chain on the rear aswell as a cover. Looking at the other comments I will look at how I can attach my chain more effectively, but as I get more expensive bikes (just have a 125 at the minute) I will definitely be investing in your suggested products, thanks.

@@Edgunsuk if they want it they will get it, end of. No amount of chains, locks, barriers, guns will stop them. For a start they will nick it when your out, grind through, bend doors or whatever they need to. The whole point of these security measures is to make it so hard for them they won't bother. They folded my garage door in half, saw all the security then broke into the house for the keys while my wife was in there, fortunately my German shepherd put stop to that (go Roxy) and tore part the skin off his arm in the process so they nicked whatever else wasn't locked down in the garage, welder, tools and my mountain bike. I have since moved but the same security is fitted, along with some extra special custom made electrical products to give them a "stunning" surprise 😉

@@rich.dodd1 Good dog Roxy ! A lot of people weigh up their security measures against convenience of use, if it takes 20 minutes to get your bike out when you have the keys (and know the correct sequence of removal to prevent sunning surprises) it makes owning a bike less convenient. I live in an area that had a very high bike theft rate a few years ago, probably the highest in the country so we took some pro-active measures to reduce it. We set up a FB group to keep track of victims which grew very rapidly in a matter of weeks. Some members took it on themselves to correlate all bike thefts and attempted thefts in the area with as many details as possible. Other members coordinated patrols to track and trace stolen bikes and return them when possible and other members tracked the thieves and 'confronted' them to let them know their actions were not advisable and also followed them when they went out looking for bikes to steal. We also got together with local councillors who arranged meetings with The Chief of Police and local Police Inspectors and presented them with lots of information that they were not previously aware of, they were surprised and pleased that we were able to do all this and it was a huge benefit in removing a lot of thieves from the streets and cutting bike thefts down to current levels. Obviously this was a group effort but it was successful, by comparison there were 2 or 3 bike thefts every day before we set up the FB group and now there are less than 2 or 3 every month, that is still more than we want but it was a drastic improvement overall.. A lot of the success was down to bikers using better awareness of theft and using effective security measures too, I continually advise people on how to secure their bikes and what types of locks and chains would be suitable for different circumstances whenever I see someone in a car park or leaving their bike in unsuitable locations or anyone that asks for advice online.

The best theft protection against motorcycle thieves is - in the long term - 10 grams of PETN under the seat, together with remote ignition using a GSM mobile phone. Once the word has got around that many motorcycle thieves have recently come home in two halves, the number of thefts is guaranteed to drop dramatically.
