If that's a sumac sapling next to the larger fencing, I'd get that out of there as soon as possible, and as completely as possible. They grow really fast and bush out if they are just cut off.

Cresting is something that, even today as designers, we would find challenging to create. I'd probably have to reference Vitruvius and a few other 19th-century Beaux Art catalogs just to find the appropriate design prints to recreate them. I'd also need to consult an iron fabricator to find one that can actually make them. So yes, they are very special indeed!

I am curious if you ever watch any of the KZfaq channels by the people in France who are restoring old chateaux. Many of them are facing the same issues restoring them that you are facing with your house. One of my favorites is Escape To The Dream with a family that is restoring a chateau that was abandoned for 40 years.

Many older buildings here in the UK have been strengthed with similar ironwork. Often they were made by the village blacksmith, and are of an S shape. I believe the rod inside was installed hot, so as it cooled it shrank and pulled tight. Nowadays they are painted black, just like yours.

for the broken bottom of the fence, it was very common in the day to plant hostas along an iron fenceline and they would cover the botton of the fence beautifully. If the fence is high enough above the ground the top of the design would show.

Good job on railing, back rock foundation thanks you for getting rid of air blockage, good choice on toilet paper holder. People were arguing about which way to place the toilet paper before anyone heard about a waterfall effect. Dear Abbey wrote and spoke about it at a Missouri Teachers convention in the seventies, but here's a tip, if you have pets or children do not let it fall from the front unless you want toilet paper pulled all through your house. The reinforcement rod heads will look nice painted black, the ones you have must be the older design, as I only remember seeing the star shaped ones. Excellent on finding the iron fencing and roof trim.

What we're told here (west-central Ohio), those diamonds are called "earthquake bolts". Their inclusion in the house is two-fold: 1. Too keep the walls from spreading from the home's weight/height. 2. Keep the house as a solid piece in the event of earthquakes. Similiar stories were told about houses in Charleston, South Carolina, repaired or built after an earthquake there.

Seeing all this progress has made my own projects look a little more doable. Just visited the Queen Mary after a little over three years the ship's been closed. And seeing everything being done on this 2nd Empire house really shows how beautifully restored the Art Deco Queen Mary can look now that it's been given over to the right hands. Imagine if Kaleb was put in charge of the ship's restoration work! So cathartic to see the house's facade be brought back to its original glory.

First note: if there are cats, dogs or toddlers in the house, the roll is not backwards, it is protected from being pawed or patted into a pile on the floor. Second - love the work on the pointing, hope more of the shops in your area recognize the need for lime mortar to be in stock. Three different types of tieback diamonds makes me wonder if it was a design choice or replacement over the years, using whatever was available? On that note, fantastic ironwork finds! even having at least one standard to use for patterning the rest. Finally - so happy to see the lift problems worked out so the rest of the facade can be corrected. Another step forward to the great street view!

@1:50 Back then Glens Falls had a lot of lumber processing mills where they got pulp wood from the Adirondacks. So, the process was timber cut in the Adirondacks, shipped to Glen Falls for processing into raw materials, shipped to Albany for processing into finished products, then shipped to NYC for sale and shipping around the world. All this along the Hudson River. Now, it's all done elsewhere and transportation is by truck and shipping containers.
