Cool thing is MK5 - MK6 Jettas have a 2.5L I5 engine that sounds amazing when straight piped.

I'm American, and I drag race, so a V8 with a radical cam is the best sounding engine noise to me. However, the I5 is definitely a cool sounding powerplant, so I definitely get the fandom. I didn't think about them at all, until we had one in my wife's VW Jetta. It took the car from absolutely lame to something interesting. I had that thing in sport mode every time I drove it, which basically just raises shift points and holds gears longer. A manual would have made me love it. It had a cool growl that beat the hell out of the 4 cylinder option, and sounds better than the average V6 to me. I found it funny that the VW 2.5 was based on half of a Lamborghini Gallardo engine.

Love the older ones, all the new ones with snap, crackle & pop "maps" sound terrible.

In the great wide world of motorsports does anything stir the soul like the sound of a Group B Quattro. The engine sound and that beautiful blow off whistle will forever be the sound of a long lost category us old boys (and girls) wish was still going ! 😎👍

I own a 1994 Urs4. I never put on the radio. Only when driving on the highway on cruise! 😉 Shift at redline because the AAN can take it!

My favourite engine to ever exist is the Lamborghini V10 (both the 5.0 and the 5.2), and this just sounds like a more timid version of that and I absolutely love it. Would buy one in a heartbeat.

The only annoying thing are the DSG farts from the new ones. I still can't believe Audi refused to make the new TTRS with manual gearbox. The old one was a bliss to drive with a 6speed manual. Now it's like every other car out there. What worries me more is the fact even though they're 5cylinder engines, the new FSIs and TFSIs don't sound as the old-school port-injection. I've had few old-school 5 cylinder quattros and when i entered the RS3 , the only time it sounded like a true 5-cylinder was when idling. So i guess the rate of fire isn't the only cause for the sweet sweet noise. It's the same with the V8s. Seems like direct injection dulls out some of the noise and lessens the thrill of the engine sound.

I do appreciate the upload, but - with respect - a lot of these engines sound like poop to me. I prefer the early 5-cylinder sounds. I did my (amateur/ club) rallying in the 1980s during the Group-B era: monstrous engines, heroic drivers, scary, primitive cars, left-foot braking to keep the turbos on song... Fabulous. Spectating in a forest at midnight you'd hear the cars literally half a mile away, and you could tell a Quattro from a Manta or a Mk.2 Escort and a Metro 6R4 from a Lancia Delta or Stratos with your eyes closed. Engines revved cleanly right up to the red line. I liked that. No, I LOVED that. Oh, I understand the reason for modern engine mapping, anti-lag, traction control, and all the rest of the sophisticated shenanigans, but to me the once glorious early Audi engines now sound like garbage. They spend more time 'off' than 'on', and that's incredibly unsatisfying. It's all bangs and cracks and not a hint of pure, clear, clean power. That's quite depressing. The odd noises seem to excite the modern generation of petrol-heads - young boys who are into drifting, LED lighting, doughnuts and letting off fireworks in car parks - but it breaks my heart to see people punching the air in triumph as what sounds like a 4-wheeled heap of scrap badly in need of tuning drives past. Yes, I know I'm completely out of touch and out of date, but l don't care. I wanna hear engines, not computers. After watching this video (thanks for it, by the way) I'll be switching to one of those 'pure sound Audi Quattro' rally compilation videos for a bit of proper 5-cylinder music... ;-)
