Max is correct here, because Bryan is clearly NOT a psychiatrist. Here is a more clear example: "If I were a vampire, then I would bite you." So Max is correct here. Max's terminology is also correct, within the paradigm of an English professor. Bryan is not an English professor, and Bryan might interpret 'hypothetical' to mean 'maybe'. But if Bryan might be a psychiatrist, then he would use the "If I was" construction. "If I was rude, then I apologize."
