I consider Gwangju as my Korean hometown. It’s the first city where I spent most of the hot, humid summer of 2018 wandering and exploring when I first moved to South Korea.
Gwangju is the city where I bought my bicycle, my first hiking experience in Korea, where I partied with friends on the weekends, where I saw BTS, and it’s the first place where I started learning about Korea’s modern history.

How to visit Gwangju Metropolitan City (광주광역시)?
To visit Gwangju via train, korail’s website to visit Gwangju Songjeong Station (광주송정역) or maybe Gwangju Station (광주역). To visit Gwangu via bus, use the Bustoago website to go to Gwangju U Square Bus Terminal. Or even visit Gwangju by plane!

Nice to see A positive spin on gwangju. I moved from Seoul to here because of wife and initially wanted to cry....i have since acclimated and ACC is worth a visit or many visits as the installments and events change. Gwangju is known for korean democracy, as you aptly pointed out, and fine ceramics due to the composition of the soil. Also, the food is considered the best in the country (hansik) as this is an agricultural region. The old kings of seoul sent intellectuals to gwangju that disagreed with their thoughts, hence the rebellious nature and the risk taking in 1980 to bring down the autocrats. I am very proud of the people for that and gwangju continues to serve as a source of independent thinking to counter the overwhelming dominance of Seoul. Gwangju is not a tourist town, so you probably need a reason to be here other than for site seeing. I am very happy to see your positive spin on the area and several of your suggestions I was not familiar with. I will check them out. Nice work.

Thanks for making this video. I was stationed at Gwangju Air Base from 1989 to 1990 while serving in the USAF (back they it was spelled Kwanju). Gwangju Air Base is a Korean Royal Air Force base located right next to, and around Gwanju International Airport. I believe there are still some Americans stationed at the air base.

@@WheresAnne Yes, I recognise some of the places in the downtown area. Of course, like all cities, Gwangju is changing fast. There was no subway there, for example, when I was there. I lived in Yong Bong dong area near Chonnam University, which is where the 1980 uprising started.

영상 유익하게 잘 봤습니다 감사합니다. 참고로, ACC 앞 구 도청건물은 518 당시 광주시민들이 계엄군과 최후의 항전이 벌어진 곳으로 ACC 설계시 모두 없애려고 계획했던 곳인데 광주시민들이 끝까지 지켜내어 보존하고 있는 아주아주 의미 있는 장소입니다 더불어 망월동에 있는 국립518민주묘지 가시면 당시 희생자들과 처참했던 당시의 현장을 영상으로 만나보실 수 있답니다 미리 신청하시면 해설사의 안내와 설명까지 들으실 수가 있습니다.

Yes! It’s Gwangju Metropolitan City 광주광역시 as mentioned in the description, near Jeonnam 전남 province in the south. (Not the Gwangju city in gyeonggi-do)

Hi, Gwangju (광주광역시) is a city, not a province at all. It's near Jeollanam-do province, but isn't IN the province. Cities aren't provinces. (Similar comparison is how New York City is a city, not a state)

It’s already mentioned in the comments and the video and the video description. When you’re at a bus terminal or train station in Korea, it often says 광주 (전남) and 광주 (경기도) so adding 전남 helps make it clear it’s in the southern region. Thanks!

How long does it take you to get to Gwangju from Jeollanamdo via public transportation usually?

Totally depends on which town in Jeollanamdo where you’d be traveling from. :) For example, bus from Bitgaram-dong, Naju-si can take 30 minutes. Train from Yeosu could take hours.

If you wanna go to any cities in jeollananamdo from Gwangju , You can get there less than 2 or 2 and a half hours by bus .
