there's footage of him cheering on the streets before a soccer game wearing a flag in his back like a cape just singing out loud ps. that's was a report of the people on the streets because of the soccer game that was about to happen not about him at all he was just casually got caught there

that was a st louis rapid and blitz tournament I believe and that was Magnus' famous "quiet the haters" confessional booth, story goes that everyone there (the GM commentator) "criticizing" Magnus and goes long way praising Caruana and So (it was in the US) so when Magnus got a winning position against Caruana He went into the confessional booth and made that famous hand gesture

Why didn't the St. Louis Chess commentator try acknowledging what Magnus was saying, maybe backing up a bit: I apologize I said your game wasn't smooth about 5 times and I can see how that wouldn't sound very respectful. Could we start over and I will try to be more reasonable in my expectations.

He is a vivid guy.. his words just gets under our skin.. a huge criticizer.. Example anand vs smirin game where anand spend 1:43 mins on 4th move

Maurice is also a GM, though he doesn't play much anymore so he has probably dropped off (whether you consider peak rating vs current rating). He was the first black person to achieve grandmaster in chess in 1999. He was also inducted into the chess hall of fame in 2016. Maurice is definitely not a nobody. I don't know the history between Maurice and Magnus, but Maurice is ALWAYS like this on camera. He is trying to get interesting comments, but people take it too personally. I guess he could have said "The game may not seem smooth to the people watching, but how would you describe it, Magnus?" may take on a less defamatory tone. But again, this isn't an isolated incidence with how Maurice chooses his words. He knows what he is doing, and that's why he maintains his spot as the commentator. He does both high level commentary and low level commentary, because he is capable of that.

I'm at a loss because I can't think of any competition where afterwards asking a participant, "Why wasn't that smooth?" would make any sense at all.

@@martinmartin8666 It's actually quite equal. There's a show on Netflix showing either an orignal story or a documentary about a 13 year old girl chess player who becomes a world champion I believe. You can google chess players and see who's good. That's all I really know :)

Honestly, I kind of agree with Magnus here. Maurice has this way of belittling players that aren't playing totally perfect chess, and making even a win seem dramatic and a struggle.

Maurice is credited in textbooks for becoming the first black GM player that helped introduce many communities to chess. Carlsen is featured in niche chess books. Maurice does not give two fucks. First black player to become a GM (1999), inducted into the chess of fame in 2016. Maurice is an inspiration to many as well, showing that a black man can become a GM.

Magnus was already pissed at the commentators for rooting for the Americans in that tournament and then Maurice asks him why the game wasn't "smooth" enough, which is not a great question. I mean, do you want an angry reaction from the World champion or do you rather have him explain in detail how the game went? In this case Maurice was playing the role of a journalist who wants to make the interviewee uncomfortable and that was understandably annoying for Magnus.
