He was the age-appropriate Mr. Darcy. In the novel Darcy is 28, and Matthew Macfadyen was 28 when he filmed this. He really did nail the performance.

Matthew MacFadyen is to me the most romantic and most true to life Mr Darcy ever.. his eyes.. his expressions.. his beautiful voice... every part of him speaks of passion and hope fulfilled.. Pride and Prejudice I have read many times.. currently I am reading it again.. and as I do I imagine this wonderful and truly beautiful man as Mr Darcy.. absolute perfection he is.. exactly as I have always imagined him to be.. Thank you for this exquisite and ethereal video.. watching it impossible it is not to fall in love with him yourself.. so magnetic and mesmerizing he is.. Yes., with Matthew in this role.. I indeed love Mr Darcy.. most ardently indeed! Jen999💙

I quite agree. I have seen other depictions but they never quite measure up. Matthew Macfayden is the quintessential Mr. Darcy. I also think Keira Knightly is the ultimate Elizabeth Bennet: beautiful without being too beautiful, lively yet thoughtful and most of all, the perfect match for Matthew Macfayden's Mr. Darcy. I recently re-read this, as well, and enjoy it every time I do.

I concur . I’ve watched the movie several times and captivated by Matthew Macfadyen’s wonderful performance as mr Darcy , his nuances Mannerisms, vulnerability onscreen is mesmerizing . Keira is delightful , exhibits a personality of strength , meekness when truth is revealed of Mr Darcy’s love for her . A romantic movie for all ages .❤

Looking back at this movie following the cast's success with their careers, it's insane how we managed to get to see them together in one movie before they went bigger. I mean, Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Rosamund Pike, Carey Mulligan, Donald Sutherland, Judi Dench? Omg.....

Matthew has “it”. Stage presence and a voice that draws you to him no matter the part. His Mr. Darcy is my fav next to Olivier.

I had a Mr. Darcy type and I miss him so kind of trouble. We got into it bad... I said some things and he wrote a horrible letter to me which he knows how much I love of a letters. So we walked away from each other sadly. I fell in love with him I meant it unlike him I still in love and want to be with him. I'm heartbroken truly. I'm hoping I won't be anymore because I can't take it and since he is done I need to move on.

Matthew is such a good actor that it took me like three episodes to realize he was Mr. Darcy. Tom's a nasty, nasty character but Matthew makes him very enjoyable to watch. And his Darcy is my favorite

Mr. Darcy's pride in his family lineage, achievements, vast estate, etc.) and his prejudice on subjective observation, family status, scandals etc. Lizzy's pride on her humble family, her liberated and free thinking, etc. while her prejudice is rooted on status quo, gender issues, the divide between rich and poor, etc. These subtle discussion of issues in the movie and book makes Jane Austen a woman with views that are advance in the 1800s. That is why the characters are all endearing because they are real and historically correct during those times for both genders.

Elizabeth did tell Mr Darcy the best way to communicate affection is through dancing. Then she told him to overcome not being able to communicate, he should practice. Funny thing he tried both of those suggestions on her and she missed it, because she was stuck on what she heard him say about her at the 1st ball. Darcy and Elizabeth seemed to break all the rules regard being alone, with him coming into her living space and bedroom unannounced and Elizabeth had no idea of his efforts. It made for a beautiful love story that worked out in the end. And, the casting was very good. The actor's presentation of the story was captivating. Every moment.

Dating a Mr. Darcy type is hard. I had one and I miss him so kind of trouble. I'm so sorry that we got into it bad I said things, for which he wrote a horrible letter to me (which he use my love of a letters) and we walked away from each other but when I said I fell in love with him I meant it unlike him. Why do I still have to be in love him and want to be with him. I'm heartbroken truly. I hope this crazy feeling will go away because I can't take it anymore since he is over me. Keira's version of Elizabeth is insufferable. She smirks and simpers and preens as if eternally transfixed with her own image in a mirror. And the guy playing Darcy...ugh. He doesn't get it all. He plays it flat out moonstruck puppy that someone kicked and then left out in the rain.

Wrong. Most of us who like this version do not see it with the perception you're describing, in my opinion her smirking and similing reflects her girly and tom-boyish nature which I like. Which is how 20 year olds actually act. Kierna was actually 19 in the movie as well, she was perfect. Mathew was perfect in his portrayal of the hard side as well as the vulnerable side of Me Darcy which gives more life to the character and makes him less robot-like. It is subjective after all.
