EMD seemed to rule the rails back in those days. The whistle of an EMD turbo is nice

My 1970’s childhood home in river forest Illinois was literally 30 feet away from the soo tracks. My bedroom would shake every hour or so during the night. It was before they replaced the jointed rail with welded continuous rails. The click clack of the wheels was like a lullaby helping me to go to sleep. I actually remember seeing unit 1776 decorated for the bicentennial in 1976 with fresh paint. I thought it was cool as hell!

Wow! Where to start😮 SOO locos all looked great… Switchers, GPs, SDs, X Milwaukee Roads, Cabooses, SP Caboose….. and NO GRAFFITI 👍😁 A true home run Jeff…awesome. I almost forgot…. The guy running to climb on the loco😳😮that brought back some memories… some scary. They finally ruled no getting on or off moving equipment.😎

Just amazing video. SOO 1400 with the spark arrestors and hot dog builder plate in good condition, fantastic. SSS Bettendorf will always be railfanning home for me so those views are always a treat. I can almost feel the mosquitos in some of those clips.

Probably through interchange of trains in hubs like Chicago, I have footage of a Rio Grande caboose back then also on the SOO. Thanks for watching Gordon.

7:05 WOAH HEY HEY!!! That is extremely dangerous and stupid on that guy’s part trying to climb onto a train when it’s moving that quickly! Jesus, what an idiot he could have gotten seriously hurt or killed doin that!

I think he was trying to pass on some news about another railroad worker and the crew didn't realize he wanted to get on. Yeah it didn't look real good.

WHAT???? The red and white,with black letters, for SOO, was one of the most visible, eye catching, and just plain neat paint schemes ever put on a loco. Better than 75% of these colors/ lettering of today. !!
