Posture…aaah yes. I remember on Tuesday stream you said to me…don’t cross my ankles when I play. Every time I practice, I think of this wonderful but great advice. Immediately I uncross my legs at the ankle. Thank you Sangah for all your excellent tips. They have helped me grow in my beginning piano journey for lifetime of joy and doing it right. I love them. Also, thank you for always motivating us “to do our best.” Whooo hoooo! 👍🏼😊❤️👏🙌

I also would add that most free pianos you're going to see are going to be spinets, which has a different kind of action than regular uprights and isn't going to have good touch, even compared to a keyboard with weighted keys. They're generally just an all around inferior piano, even disregarding cost.

Hi. I bought an 88 key weighted keyboard. I love it. But I also recommend one that has touch response. In other words the harder you strike the key, the louder the volume of the key. It feels much like a piano.

Started with a unweighted 88k Yamaha. Sounded find enough, got me through RCM 1. But then got a Nord Grand Digital. Much better Digital Piano. I still use it to practice at nights and when there are people in the house and I don't want to "perform". But after RCM 2 and practicing multiple hours a day, the Nord Grand, even with the Kawaii action, wasn't the same as playing on a real acoustic. So I bit the bullet and got a Boston 178 (Built by Kawaii). It sounds so much better and the control on the actions is so much better as well. It will last my a lifetime or at least till I'm good enough to appreciate the difference on a more luxury style piano.

I totally agree. I began 10 years ago with a digital piano. Practicing 90 minutes everyday. I finally decided to buy an acoustic, a used one. A specialist made the evaluation. The piano was 35 years of age, but was used for about 2 years. So, my « old » piano, was in fact almost new. I only had to tune it 2 times before it was perfect for me. I paid my piano 500.00$. An upright Heintzman. Now i tune it twice a year. My progression increased pretty fast with it. Last thing. The piano bench, me i like the wooden bench. I feel more confortable to move left-right. But this is my personnal feeling. Thanks Sangah for all of your work.

I started with a Casio keyboard when I first started piano lessons. Then upgraded to a Casio digital piano. After many years of not playing, started piano lessons again in 2020. Turned my piano on, and it sounded as perfect as the day I bought it. Digital all the way for me now.

I started with a MIDI controller keyboard and virtual instruments in a PC. Then upgraded to a digital piano which is very nice, on a table-style piano stand. Once I can actually play to my satisfaction I hope to 'reward' myself with an acoustic piano. Thanks for getting to the heart of the question, without unnecessary details. Great presentation, for sure!

Not a piano player, but I still liked and learned from this. I often tell people who ask about a "beginner" guitar to choose an acoustic because the strings will be softer, allowing you to learn notes, scales and chords much easier. That is, to avoid what John Lennon screamed once on a song - "I got blisters on my fingers!"

3:28 Great point! That's actually the main reason I bought my keyboard. I wanted to practice anytime but we only had an acoustic (in the living room) so I couldn't play when other people in the house were watching a movie or sleeping. Plus, I wanted to repeatedly practice scales and drills without disturbing or annoying others.

My first digital piano was a Yamaha 61 key half weighted keyboard. That was 35 yrs ago…but then 10 yrs later after I want to start learning again, I upgraded to Yamaha weighted hammer action keys stage piano P-120 in Cherry color. It sounded super awesome and really well made in Japan. Beautiful piano, too! Bought Yamaha Arius line 10 yrs later. Again very nice still made in Japan YDP-160. Played it 3-4 months but I had my son and didn’t touch it for over 11 years collecting dust. Sold it on Craigslist in April 2020. Now, my son is older, I have more time to dedicate to practicing again. I went to the store and played on several piano and settled again on a Yamaha. It’s a YDP-164 and pretty nice & looks similar to the Clavinova line. After 2 yrs consistently playing & practicing with this one now, I feel I would like to upgrade the top hammer action, the wood hammer keys of the higher line Clavinova. I tested them out at the piano music store every few months to see which one suit me better. I really appreciate your advice Sangah and opening up for discussions on this wonderful topic of piano. It is a fine instrument. Have a beautiful day everyone! Thank you for coming here to support Sangah and get involved in this enjoyable music topic. PS. I have a portable Casio red hot P-1000 in my office for lunch time practice. 😉 And a lighter portable awesome fun Roland Go-Keys, too! 👍🏼❤️

This is great advice Sangah. I made the mistake of buying a restored antique upright player piano. At the time I had a three story house and could practice to my heart's desire. Now I live in a one story home and while it makes a beautiful piece of furniture, I almost never play it because it's in the living room. I bought a Casio to tinker around with from time to time but I wish now I had gone with a digital to begin with. You're the best 💕

Sangah, thank you so much for this video. I’ve been grappling with this very question (digital or acoustic) for some time. Due to your inspirational influence, I’ve decided to take piano seriously and was weighing the options. It’s not so clear-cut. With the acoustic, it’s really a piece of furniture, requires maintenance, needs tuning, is heavy, and is influenced by weather (like the desert Southwest where I’m from). However, the harmonics, resonances, and true sound of an acoustic piano are difficult to replicate. On the other hand, with digital pianos, technology is advancing in leaps and bounds. As digital signal processing gets better and better, digital pianos are getting closer and closer to the real sound of an acoustic. After all, with a digital piano, it’s essentially a recording of a high end acoustic. But there are advantages: they’re lighter and more flexible, you can get an entire orchestra in a box, there’s so many sound options, you can wear headphones, and you get a real piano experience. Ah, the choices. Price wise, you can buy a used, quality acoustic or high end digital like the Kawai for about the same price; of course, it really depends on what you want. So thank you for this video - it was timely and helped me answer some questions I was struggling with. You just tipped the meter towards digital for me. Of course, the important thing is that with your inspiration and influence, we are all sitting on a bench in front of an instrument, whether it’s plugged in to produce sound or notes are resonating in a cabinet made of wood. Awesome video Sangah - you’re wonderful! ♥️

When I learned to play piano , I started w acoustic since my mom was my piano teacher, and already have acoustic at home. My mother was piano teacher by profession. . So I didn’t even know what digital piano or have played it till our family moved to the US in ‘89. But having said that , Sangah is accurately right on picking up digital for even the intermediate pianist as well . You’re saving space, maintenance in tuning it (annually) for me.. my piano was given to me by one of my friends who moved out of state. Otherwise I would have purchased a consoled digital for myself as well ! Thanks Sangah for the awesome practical advice for getting piano 🎹

What a great video idea. An acoustic piano is on my bucket list, but I need to be in the right kind of place to have one. I've had digital pianos since I started learning almost 30 years ago ( October 1993), starting with a very small Casio with very small keys, graduating eventually to 88-note, weighted, hammer action; my current, and longest lasting model is the Yamaha P90, which I've had for 15 years. The P90 has such a gorgeous sound through the headphones, and was not too pricey at the time (£600 UK Sterling, sort of entry level stage piano - 88 note, with weighted keys. I need a replacement since it has developed problems with the L/R audio channels and I can only use it as a midi keyboard nowadays. Great advice on the 'cons' of an acoustic piano.

I'm relieved to discover what you recommend, because that's exactly what I bought for my friend's daughters who want to learn piano. They don't have room for an acoustic so I decided on digital (plus they can play silently with headphones) but I really thought it was essential to have the same feeling as an acoustic for both dynamics and finger strength. So, I ended up buying them a weighted keyboard...not a very expensive one, but good for two young girls who have never played before.

I always go for a keyboard instead of a piano. I play a lot of synths and frequently use the mod wheel for various sounds and most digital pianos do not include one as well as sliders and knobs for instrument and DAW control. I like the ability to be able to connect to a computer too which acoustic piano's are not capable of doing.

First keyboard I had when I actually got serious about learning was Yamaha DGX-235 (from 2005, maybe), which had unweighted keys. I agree that weighted is important, but I still learned a lot on it. Then DGX-660, weighted, but I find the keybed far noisier than I like. So now I have a Casio Celviano hybrid. Very heavy and needs a moving crew go get into the house, but an excellent instrument in my opinion. I considered acoustic but decided the dangers of humidity, and need for tuning, made the hybrid a better choice.

I started studying piano in elementary with my dad acquaintance. I got my first keyboard from his recommendation. It's a very long time ago, maybe he didn't know there was a weighted keyboard. My first keyboard was a Yamaha PSR S910, I recently discovered it's more of a synth than a piano. I use that for a very long time, until middle school I went to another city, living with my aunt and there's an actual upright piano there. I am a shy person and I am very hesitant in playing the piano even though my uncle encouraged me to just play and don't be shy. It's in the living room and very loud and heavy for me because I'm used to the lighted keyboard I trained back in elementary but there are some occasional moments where I get in mood and no one's in the house and I just play the piano. Obviously it's my interest that has gotten down throughout the years, but recently I want to play the piano again. Purchased a Kawai ES-920. It's weighted with hammer action and I've been with it for a year.

It's only been two years since I got a digital piano, one with a very nice action. When I first got it, it was all I wanted to play. The action was perfectly even, the sounds were beautiful. It was a joy to play (and still is) But after a few weeks and months of playing it, I started to feel its limitations. As expressive as I could be on the digital keyboard, I couldn't express like I could on a real acoustic piano. Interestingly, I also found that my finger strength started to suffer a little bit. Now I play the digital only when I want different sounds or am going to record something. That said, I much prefer playing on a decent digital keyboard to a completely worn out acoustic like the one I grew up with. These days, digital keyboards can take you a long ways. All that to say, Sangha is spot on with her advice. Start with a digital if you're not in a family that already has an acoustic piano.

Very interesting video and valuable suggestions, thank you Sangah! Once you understand that you love the piano and you play it, it's nice to buy an acoustic one: the house becomes more beautiful and you give those who stay after us a friend for life. At least that happened to me and - besides life of course - it was the best gift my father gave me ❤️🎹

Thanks for the video Sangah, I enjoy your music very much! My latest electric piano is a Yamaha something something and it sounds great through the headphones. It sounds a lot better to me than an acoustic piano without bothering with the bulk and the tuning. However I can't get it to sound all that great through speakers so that I could share my skills with other people every once in a while. I should just probably keep experimenting with speaker settings or whatever or call a technician or salesperson to see what they recommend. I was watching a Nord KZfaq channel video of Jazz pianists and they seemed to be able to produce a good sound. Just some thoughts, thanks again for your great music

When I was 9 years old my parents got an old second-hand acoustic upright for me to learn on. Later, as an adult I realised this was a big mistake. The keys were stiff and heavy. It was much more difficult to play than my teacher's modern instrument - also acoustic (they all were in those days). I gave up at Associated Board grade 2. Over the years I had a go playing my ex's Yamaha grand and later a Yamaha upright. Now I have a 25 year old Clavinova and am still not beyond grade 2. I am so thankful for the headphones so I don't inflict my efforts on the neighbours.

Very good advice Noona! As a beginner I started with a three manual electric organ (two keyboards and pedals). Now recently I got a hammer-action weighted digital thing. I was scared to order this from web shop without trying first (!) this as I have only used unweighted and semi-weighted keys before. But I love it! It is a bit strange to play organ and synth sounds but the piano playing I'm learning fast. See my channel for demo!

I agree with you 100%. The horror stories that I've heard from amature and pro bands (like the Grateful Dead players Pigpen (Hammond B3 organ) and Keith Godchaux (Piano usually Steinway) during the Euro 72 tour. Amazing how many of the great music halls they played didn't have a piano equipped, and next to none had a Hammond B3). When Rowland first started putting weighted keys in their keyboards, it originally felt awkward, but over the decades, they've gotten a lot better. I still like the sound of a really good acoustic piano by a really good artist, but it's not so good if the piano is out of tune. Nowadays with digital technologies, the acoustic sound is extremely close to a real acoustic. (Just a side note, but it still blows me away what digital technology has done with some of the original recordings of Sergei Rachmoninov performed by Sergei Rachmoninov). More jams please. My favorite of yours is the Guitar Boogie one.

Dang that's expensive. It's about half that much in my area. I wonder if it's a real high end tuner that does the pianos in concert halls and stuff, cause that might explain the higher rate.

Wonderful advice and so well explained. I've started with a yamaha keyboard, unweighted keys and an X stand, which seems okay for that instrument. It's also very portable, offers a wide range of standard voices and can work as a MIDI controller. At the moment it serves my purposes very well, but I strongly suspect there's a Casio digital piano in my future!

not a stand but today we just need a sliding drawer built under the PC table so it saves all the space, and its perfect. Any carpenter will built it easily, i got it for my Komplete Kontrol A49 midi keyboard, it's semi-weighted keys. I am hoping to produce music and make recordings. PianoTeq is an amazing virtual piano, physical modeling, not sampled sounds of pianos. So you must try it. Im a beginner frm India. I also dont need the bench coz desk chair is working fine. Its doesn't automatically swivel and the armrest dont bother me.

A digital keyboard has lots of advantages, but it isn’t really a piano. It may be great in some cases, but if you’re serious about music, a real piano with hammers and strings is a must. It takes training to learn how to produce the many sounds that a piano can make, and you’ll never learn that on a keyboard.

I really love that you are willing to teach us beginners piano lessons that you used ❤ I was really sold on the Yamaha DGX 670 ($850 USD) for the longest time because of the reviews given by Jeremy See. Most recently he has recommended the KORG Liano 88 key ($330 USD) for beginners. Maucoli Pianoman recommends the Yamaha P-515, but at $1600, it is a bit of a risk--what if I don't like something about it? Roland Customer No-Service was a huge turnoff for me. If a company won't stand behind its products, why should I buy them?

The question I would ask is: "touch" keyboard or "pressure" keyboard (my terminology because I don't know what they are called). With the TOUCH piano, as soon you touch a key you get a sound. Touch the next key and you get a sound of similar volume. With the PRESSURE keyboard, the loudness depends on how hard to play the key (how much pressure you apply) just like an acoustic piano, so you can get a soft sound by pressing softly or a loud sound by pressing hard. I bought a Yamaha with a TOUCH keyboard and I often regret it. I think I would enjoy a PRESSURE keyboard better. Any thoughts anyone?
