"It also plays regular compact discs". Not bad for a portable cd-player! 😉

It took me a moment to realize that the pattern on the lid of the CD player when you took it out of the styrofoam block at 1:06ish was due to the protective cling plastic. I was thinking 'that's a cool pattern and color scheme' before you observed it was the film on it.

I've always wanted to buy a portable cd. It's been a while since I owned one and I really missed my Sony discman (RIP). Last I checked Sony don't make portable cd players anymore and I'm no longer familiar with some of the brands I'm seeing online. I only play my cds on my laptop right now. This seems like a really good one. I LOVE that it has a rechargeable battery. That's a really cool feature. Thanks for the recommendation.

I have a question, does it beep when it's paused? I hated when portable CD players would beep whenever they were paused or whenever you turn the volume up or down, it was a very loud high pitch beep.

nice review on this quality looking portable cd player, i have many many cds and though i have a sony portable and a component one, also a sony its always nice to see that they are still being manufactured. i know their are a lot of cheap and flimsy ones out there but this one seems to be of a much better choice from your review. i dont think cds are going to become extinct any time soon , contrary to what some people think. thanks for sharing!

I can't see this as "the best" portable CD player ever. There were plenty of models and brands that were smaller and thinner then this one. Especially in Sony's line of "CD Walkman". They produced models that had metal cases, some that were only slightly thicker the a CD jewel case. Additionally rechargeable battery systems have been used in portable CD players in the past. With companies using rechargeable AA and "gum stick" batteries. It appears that this unit has a built in rechargeable battery that is not replaceable. Which to me is a draw back. So many portable electronics are designed this way which I think makes them throw away devices sooner then necessary.

You gotta have a listen. I have the next version of this one here, and it's up there with the old Sonys. Guys on Head-fi should be in the forums raving about it, but they probably aren't. It's clean as anything, got it plugged into a Corda-HA2, using Grados, and it's dead quiet between the notes. It reminds me of my old Nad CDP, for real. I don't know who this little company is, but they hit a homerun with this little guy. Ya know sometimes in audio, it happens.

Thank you, I was going to comment to say exactly what you had on each point. I have one of these minimal size Sony Walkmans with the gumstick battery and a charging dock, they still make new batteries by the way which is really nice.

Like you, I like the CD format. The shape and mechanism of the Monodeal CD player resembles some recent portable CD players (Memorex, Onn and a Sony DE-J model) which I've bought, for almost nothing, at yard sales. Features on the Monodeal are a nice addition. My gut tells me a few years from now we'll see a "comeback" of interest in CDs since it's a form of physical media often with cover art, notes and in most (but not all) instances with really good sound quality. I also have an original 1984-vintage Sony D-5 "Compact Disc Compact Player" which predates the "Discman" branding. Generally, my better home-audio CD players still give better dynamic range than the portables but I'm definitely pleased to see somebody keeping CD players in production nowadays! PS Is the Monodeal capable of playing MP3 CD-R discs, common feature on most portable CD players made since the early 2000s?

Thank you for your message. Yes it can play mp3 and hdcd formats as well. I agree with you! My first CD player was the D-131 and I still have it. It has a touch of hiss but I still love it. How has your d-5 heald up?

the big problem with nowdays portable CD Players (or ANY made after 2008) is the complete nonexistence of bass. It's impossible to listen to hardstyle / frenchcore / harddance music in general on one of those... i miss the early 2000's when everything had a big X-BASS button on it for good reasons... story might be way different for americans as those genres never really made it there. the best portable CD Player ever made imo is the InterTronic InterSound CD60! it might be ugly and take 4 x AA batteries, but it's bass will surely shake your house

@@Recordology most still do, but it actually doesn't really do a thing compared to the older ones, which usually also let you adjust it from 0 - 3, the good ones from 0 - 6, but as said i guess it's much of an european issue as those genres were never a thing in the US...

Another nice looking player..In all honesty,i don`t listen to many CD`s personally at home anymore...Despite owning quite a few....I think the problem here is having DAB radio,with literally stacks of specialist music type stations to listen to....Kind of makes listening to music.the lazy option..ie forget CD`s....Just turn the radio on..Of course,my radio gets turned off sharply at least 2 or 3 times a day to avoid contamination of the ears in the house....at least with CD`s,i can have a Safe,no worries listening session...So yeah..need to play some cd`s a bit more.Have never owned a portable player......Played a cassette tape yesterday..Quality was brilliant,on the all in one....The Same player with the awful turntable ! All the best...Ade

They've got a new version of this, the MD601 I think it is? It's got bluetooth, but if you comb through the reviews, there's a few people saying it sounds better than this one, more instrument separation, and it has digital volume control, and a matte finish. I can't compare the two, but I can say that PCDP is excellent, it's easily up there with the old Sonys. I don't know what they did, but comparing this to the Aiwa (you reviews it under a different brand but same player), the Aiwa is a joke. This thing is clean clean clean. Anyway, I know you said you were done, but with that one, you might not be done? :) Edit to add: Oh, and USB-C charging.

I'm not sure whether or not I'm a fan of rechargeable batteries. I have a Panasonic Shockwave I've been using for at least fifteen years. I've burned through many disposable batteries, but the Shockwave still plays and sounds great. If it had been manufactured with a rechargeable battery, the player probably would have been tossed years ago. What is your opinion?
@lesrogers7310

Exactly, those built-in rechargeable batteries should be user replaceable. In this day and age it should be enforced by international law. We throw too much stuff away already.

For me, spotting old CD-rs full of people's custom music is a ton of fun. I recently found one using classic rock and space-age country to create a playlist dedicated to space travel. cost me 25 cents, but its a priceless experience.

not having cd-rw is a big L to me. For existing in a world with very few high quality cd releases, everythings done yourself. cd-rw cuts down on SO much wasted physical media, simply by being reusable. HDCD compatability is nice and all, but the whole point of that subformat is to be compatible with older players anyway. Having an older cd walkman with cd-rw would be an easy upgrade over this thing for me. Sure, its convenient that this one has USB, but its not like its usinghte data connection to burn CDs right on the player or anything spectacular like that, and most 4.5-6 volt walkmen can be adapted to usb just fine with the right barrel cable.
