We went through the profiles of top New York private equity professionals to determine which schools and firms place the best into private equity. Our dataset examines the career paths of people at mega funds and upper middle market firms. We found that the University of Pennsylvania is the best undergraduate program, while HBS is the best MBA. Goldman is the best investment bank and McKinsey is the best consulting firm.
Correction in Video: The % Total column on the "PE Feeder Schools" list is calculating incorrectly. University of Pennsylvania should be about 19% and most numbers should be doubled.

@Peaks Frameworks I'm working an ops role at GS. Any thoughts on transitioning to a PE/IB type role? Is MBA -> Associate the best option?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, MBA -> Associate I think is the way to go. Operations tends to be a little too far of a reach. I'd maybe check your group history to see if there's any examples of laterals to different functions internally. But even if you could hop around, it'd probably still take 3+ years to get into IB.

Sick video Matt. Just wondering, how did lateral recruiting work at Evercore? Was it networking or job posts? Also, how was the culture in tmt NY?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
Both networking and job postings. I think job postings were always posted, but they were filled so quickly that a lot of people came into the process via referrals. TMT is actually a bunch of different groups in NY. Tech, media, telecom are all different groups. I think they're notoriously all very busy. Media does a lot of sell-sides. Telecom is very technical. Tech is overall pretty grindy.
@samwhaddad
@samwhaddad 3 жыл бұрын
@@PeakFrameworks what do you think makes a group more busy vs another? For example, an analyst can only take on so much work, right? Otherwise work wouldn’t get done (excld. Moelis). Also, if you aren’t on a live deal, MDs would just pitch pitch pitch so you’ll have to work the hours either way.

HI, saw the following comment on an online forum about PE careers and would love to get your opinion on it: "I feel like 75% of the guys I know coming out of their Pre-MBA PE roles are pretty much done with PE, and in some cases investing all together, and will tell anyone and everyone that PE is the intellectual equivalent of watching paint dry. I think it stems from a couple of things 1. The feeder aspect of target schools/banks 2. Lack of perspective 3. PE process and 4. Fund culture"
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, that's a pretty awesome comment. I wouldn't say 75%... I might say 1/3 leave finance / investing altogether. Most people in PE still stay in finance, with lots going to hedge funds and activist funds. Not everyone stays in PE itself, but that's because it's competitive to do so and for a lot of hedge fund people, it wasn't their intention in the first place. Intellectually I actually think PE can be pretty involved. Seems more so the higher you climb up in the firm. It's not always going to be traditionally fun intellectual stuff, but many of the key tasks: building a detailed operating model, negotiating credit terms, reading legal documents are all quite hard. It's hard to do any of those things passively. I agree that PE process is usually what breaks people. It can be extremely demanding and sudden. Fund culture tends to be pretty intense, but that's true for almost everything in finance.

Hi Matt. What is your opinion on Western Ivey MBA (assuming international student who wants to settle in Canada)? Thank you for the great work
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
I think Rotman is the best in Canada. Ivey is alright, but all Canadian MBAs are significantly weaker than their undergraduate programs. It's generally not worth it in my opinion unless you're switching industries.
@Hcjfnzjc
@Hcjfnzjc 3 жыл бұрын
Extrapolation is in the eye of the statistician, but these numbers really should be normalized for the undergrads, MBAs, and former firms. For example, raw numbers of GS vs PJT or Evercore will definitely swing to GS; but per head count for junior analysts, this will definitely favor PJT. Evercore places well, but they also pay top of the industry to have a good retention within the company
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I would like that level of data to refine this further, but I think this still gets the directional answer. I think I already did PJT a huge favor by combining their results with Blackstone - PJT by itself has definitely not been as strong. Evercore also I would say has poor analyst retention (because their recruiting is solid). Very, very few analysts stay to associate.

Thanks for the video. Had an opportunity to join either Bain or a Growth Equity portfolio company operations out of undergrad. Long term goal is unicorn c-suite/ entrepreneurship. What would be your suggestion?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, it really depends on the specific portfolio company. I would lean Bain though. Unless you have strong conviction about the company, I think it's a safer bet to do Bain. You can most likely join that same company or a similar company from Bain afterwards. Bain is probably also a better credential and gives you some more downside protection. I also assume that if the company is already owned by a growth equity firm, it's probably mature enough where you're not getting meaningful equity as a new grad.

The conclusion that McKinsey is the best of consulting is a pretty weak argument because McKinsey doesn’t win by a lot while it has significantly more employees than Bain and BCG
@FXFXFXFX
@FXFXFXFX 3 жыл бұрын
McKinsey has the strongest brand name among the three. The others are strong companies as well, and the differences are marginal. Pay is the same at all three firms. It's more about prestige factors. McKinsey slightly edges out BB in MBB. There's a reason it's MBB and not BMB or BBM. The exit opps at McKinsey are ridiculous and they are a feeder into F500 C-suites
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point. Given the small magnitude of exits, I still think McKinsey is comfortably ahead of the other firms. As you said, it might be the same when you account for things per capita. I would personally still pick McKinsey over the other two if my goal was private equity though.

Great video. This topic gets debated so often but rarely assessed empirically. I think it's tricky to compare apples to apples from an undergrad perspective. You have a lot fewer students from Princeton trying to break into PE than from business schools like Wharton / Ivey. Clearly Wharton / Ivey kill it, but it's misleading to interpret this as saying you'd be at a relative disadvantage when recruiting with a degree from many of the non business schools on this list. Like you mention early on, "traditional prestige" for undergrad tends to matter more for PE than banking. To that end, when you consider student body size + liberal arts vs. business as a proxy for number of students trying to break into PE, I think Harvard, Dartmouth and Yale really stand out. Dartmouth in particular given its liberal arts emphasis and small student body. Somewhat of a subjective interpretation for sure though. - monkey headed to megafund PE

Queen's isn't a top school for private equity, but they definitely still have people in the industry. There are still consistently a handful of Queen's people that end up in banking every year and have a shot at PE. This is only for NY too. Queen's does well in Toronto.

I think this view misses the picture a little. I think most people don’t break into PE post mba so the real view is career PE people are HBS/Stanford/Wharton or the MBA isn’t worth it to them.

Do private sector PE firms recruit from pension funds?

I've seen certain groups at CPP break into top private equity firms, but those candidates were sort of rockstars coming from top Canadian schools to begin with. There are a lot of groups at pension funds - not all will get contacted by headhunters.

If you had a larger sample of PE firms (include BX and Apollo) and factor in the West Coast offices of Tech funds, I suspect you will see that GS / MS outplaces all the other BB's
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
GS / MS and are already outplacing the other firms, but yes agreed! Not all firms have big offices out west, so I think including west coast would change things a bit. GS / MS / Moelis / Evercore all up. Qatalyst probably makes the list too at that point if you include SF roles.

Any advice to get into REPE
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 3 жыл бұрын
Real estate IB is probably the most common way in. In my view, it's a lot less competitive than other fields. I think a lot of real estate firms also hire directly out of school too though.

@@PeakFrameworks I'm from Mexico, next year I'll be attending a masters real estate in NYU or MBA at Mccombs. Haven't decided yet. Any advice on these options? I'm looking forward to a seat in a REPE firm and have a good opportunity to end up in a Credit division of a Small bank in San Antonio.

Dude Your McKinsey point is biased, no consulting firm has a laser-like focus on PE than Bain, it's consultants are way more trained for PE than McKinsey. And secondly, HBS sends more than 900 MBAs in the market while Stanford has only 400, if you look overall, Stanford MBAs have a competitive edge over HBS in PE and VC funds. The rest you can comment

A lot of PE recruiting is timing. You don’t need to be at largest fund to be making a lot of money. Remember you don’t get anything that you don’t ask for

U of T isn't close. I actually didn't find a single person at these top firms who went to U of T. Ivey, McGill, Queen's, and even Waterloo / Laurier double degree are better. Rotman is still the best MBA in Canada but that's more because all the MBAs in Canada are pretty weak for finance.
