This is the first mention of Fran the Man. You could not be more right. I have done a statistical analysis comparing each Hall of Fame quarterback to the average quarterback of their era and Fran is the farthest above average when you consider 15 statistical categories including strength of schedule and longevity. He is followed by Manning, Brees, Unitas and Staubach. I was surprised when I completed my thousand plus hour study but it only makes sense. He had all the records when he retired, broke them in less games than it took Unitas to establish them and held those records longer than anyone ever has. Even though they changed the rules the year he retired to make it easier to pass. He also played at the time in NFL history when defenses were at their peak when compared to the offenses. Fran is the real GOAT, who knew. I always knew he was underrated and going into the study I thought top 10, maybe top 5 but probably not. But in the end he came out on top and only Manning was close to him. Interestingly on a scale from Troy Aikman at 234 points to Fran at 664 the 3 through 5 ranked QBs are only 5 points apart at around 600. Also something interesting is that the average quarterback from any era scores 236 on this scale.

I think that Ken Anderson definitely should've also been an honorable mention for the 70's. He was the very first NFL QB to play in a pass-heavy offense, he led the league in passing yards twice, passer rating twice, completion percentage once, second-team all-pro nod once, 2x pro bowler, and he had a much lower INT total than Bradshaw. Also consider that Anderson didn't have the luxury of an elite team, and his accomplishments are more impressive than they seem, especially in a run-heavy era where there were fewer rules protecting offensive players.

Fran Tarkenton should’ve been the honorable mention for the 70’s. He set every single passing record and was the forerunner for the scrambling QB’s that were to come as time went on. If you put him on the Cowboys, Steelers or Raiders, any of those teams would’ve gone to and possibly won every Super Bowl in the 70’s. Also kinda stunned Manning didn’t make an honorable mention in the 2010’s. Made 4 pro bowls, 2 all pro teams, won an MVP, won comeback player of the year, started 2 super bowls oh and only had the greatest regular season ever by a QB in NFL history in 2013. Peyton’s Denver years are very overlooked, the first 3 years he was there, he was playing QB in a way that nobody ever had before.

Starr was a game manager with the best defense from the 60's and the best running game from the 60's. Before and after those two pieces were in place Bart was below average. His teammates carried him through the glory years and when they needed a quarterback to step up when the rest of the team was not the best in the league he failed miserably. Unitas, Jurgensen and Tarkenton were all much, much better. I have written a book on the subject and after thousands of hours of research I can tell you that Tarkenton is the only quarterback in history that can claim to be the best best in the league for two non overlapping 7 year stretches, from 1964 to 1970 and again from 1972 to 1978.

I didn't like the Roger staubach pick either but you can definitely make more of an argument for him than you could for Young over Farve. Three-time MVP, three straight NFC championship games, same amount of super bowls won, much better stats year in and year out except for accuracy. 2- squeezing Johnny U in, just to make sure he got a decade, was lame. It's hard to say that emmitt Smith is the greatest running back of all time when we know that Barry Sanders and Jim Brown ran circles around him. But he had the best offensive line ever. It was like he was running downhill his whole career. You could drive 18 wheelers between the holes that guys like Larry Allen and nate Newton were creating. Nova check at tight end moose at tailback the all-time greatest running back yardage wise, Alvin Harper and Michael Irvin on the outside, and that insane offensive line blocking for you, makes it hard to give aikman full credit as well. I know he got three rings but I don't think that he was a better quarterback than young or farve. I would put number four, as the clear number one for that decade because he was great from 92 all the way through the end of the decade and one three consecutive MVPs, went to three straight NFC championship games, went to two super bowls and got a ring as well as putting up gaudy ass numbers. Then after that it's a toss-up between aikman Young and you have to put elway in there. I know the '80s was probably his better decade but at the same time he won back-to-back rings at the end of the 90s! I think aikman was great, and he does deserve credit, but like I said I have a hard time giving him full credit when he had that team around him. I would have to really sit down and think about where I would put those other three guys, but I know that they would all be behind Brett favre.

I completely understand. It was the same for my high school football team. I played TE and DE/OLB (true WR was non existence, just Tight End and Slotback) and I still remember my career stats: 7 catches on 7 attempts, 88 yards, 1 TD... in 3 years of playing varsity😞. The star of the team was always the RB. We ran the ball every game at least 90% of the time and never optioned the ball once because our offensive live sucked. Even when teams kept stopping our runs we still ran it, smh. We had a really good QB and good receivers to balance it out but no, it's run, run, run. What was even more frustrating was our defense. We always ran a base 4-4. How did teams beat us: 5 wide. EVERY.. FREAKING.. TIME!!! We begged our coaches to have more DBs out there but their stubborn old school way of thinking always got the better of them. They just refused to adapt to the game. When it came to the yearly awards you know who walked away with the most hardware? You guessed it, the running back.

Sonny was great and I think that it was coaching that kept him from being a top 10 greatest of all time. In my book I have him at #14. Although it was not George Allen that messed up his career. When Allen took over Sonny's career was down to 4 partial seasons as a backup. Throughout the 60's when Sonny had all of his best seasons he only played on one winning team because they didn't balance their offense at all and they had a porous defense. Vince Lombardi coached Washington for one season and they were 7-5-2. As the backup after George Allen came along and they had a defense and a running attack Jurgensen had an 11-2 record as a starter when he was past his prime.

It bugs me how Bradshaw always gets knocked for having the Steel Curtain and everyone acts like Montana deserves most the credit for his SB wins. Montana's defense was exactly top 3 regular season when averaged out for every superbowl year... Terry's defense averages out at top 2.5. That means for all those 4 SB wins Terry's defense was only 17% better than Montana's during his 4 SB wins (rounded up).

In 1974, Bradshaw threw under 1k yards, 7 Touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Yet that Steelers team still won a SB In 1979, Bradshaw threw for 26 touchdowns and 25 interceptions, yet that Steelers crew manage to go 12-4 and win another Super Bowl. In the 1975 playoffs, Bradshaw threw for 3 interceptions against the Oakland Raiders in the conference championship and the Steelers still won that game and the SB. A week before the AFC Title game, Bradshaw threw for 2 interceptions and 0 touchdowns. The Steelers also manage to make it to the playoffs in 1973 despite Bradshaw having 15 interceptions and 10 touchdowns. Even his MVP season was possibly the worst (statically) in the 70s for all QBs that won MVP that decade. Of all the QBs that won MVP in the 70s, Bradshaw is last in Rating, has the most interceptions in his MVP season, the 2nd fewest yards, and the highest interception percentage. The only reason why he got the award is because 1978 was just an overall bad year for QBs and for some reason they didn't want to give the award to any of the Running backs that had a better season. Bradshaw was more so a hinderance than an ally for the Steelers and it legit speaks volumes how fantastic that Steelers defense was. Meanwhile Joe Montana's worst statistical season when he won a SB was 1981 when he threw for 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. A completely different performance compared to Bradshaw first year winning a SB. And Montana did this without Jerry Rice (Rice was drafted in 85). Fun fact, that season Montana had more touchdowns than the entire Steelers QB locker room combined. So ask yourself this, why shouldn't Bradshaw receive a few knocks against him for that Steelers Steel Curtain?

@@wholesomecomment45 I'm not saying that Bradshaw was as good or better than Montana, I just think the discrepancy in popular opinion between the two is greater than it should be when you break it down. In the 70's QB's threw a lot more picks in general so comparing 70's stats to 80's isn't a linear comparison. In the 70's even HOF QB's would commonly throw for more picks than TD's every other season. The only guys that didn't were the dink and dunk ones who rarely took risks and even they threw a lot of picks compared to TD's. I don't think Montana would've fared too well if he played in the era Bradshaw did. I mean, what even were the best defenses Montana faced in the 80's? Terry routinely played against a lot of the toughest defenses in NFL history basically and won against them. The 1981 Bengals had the 12th ranked D, '84 Dolphins were 7th, 1988 Bengals were 16th, 1989 Broncos were 1st (can't argue with that one). So Montana faced on average a 9th ranked defense in The SB with at least 3 pro bowlers on his O-line every year and one year every O-lineman was a pro-bowler at one point. Terry faced 1974 Vikings Purple People Eaters (2nd most iconic defense in the 70's) at 3rd ranked, 1975 Cowboys at 9th, 1978 Cowboys at 3rd, and the '79 Rams at 11th. So Terry on averaged faced a 6.5 ranked defense in The SB with one HOF center on 3 and a couple 1-2 time pro-bowlers spread out. Bradshaw also outdueled Roger Staubach TWICE in the big game. Terry played in 2 SB's that were one score games and the other 2 weren't complete blowouts. Half of Montana's SB's were complete blowouts where he ran up the score when the opposing offense had no chance.

The Packers had the best running game of the decade, the best defense of the decade and the best coach. Starr was a game manager, nothing more. Even though he is helped out greatly by his team's success in my study of the greatest of all time he is the 26th best out of the 28 Hall of Fame quarterbacks to retire after 1960. Once his defense and running game became about average Bart was well below the average quarterback of his day. On the other hand when you compare how much better a quarterback was than the average quarterback of his era, Johnny U comes in as the 4th best of all time.

One QB that many tend to forget in late 70's and early 80's is Dan Fouts. Almost every year, his team would finish #1 in offense, but #28 in defense. If they would have at least halfway decent defense, they may have gone to a Superbowl.
