To prevent fabric from being grabbed by the machine when you start a seam, try sewing thru a piece of scrap fabric (called a "leader") first then sew right on to the seam. No more picking fabric out of your sewing machine.

I absolutely get the checking 10 times - then cutting! lol The big stitch quilting is adorable. And I love the backing fabric. Also, I love to see a baby quilt that isn't in "neutral beige/grey" colors but in fun colorful fabrics. Little one will love this!

I use that double sided tape. The only 2 or 3 things I would do differently is to press the tape at each stage of application because it makes it STICK down in place. And as another comment said a ladder stitch which I am also still practising. The results when the tape is well stuck down are better and where you stitch can be more accurately invisible to the naked eyes. I would hold the quilt direction or stitch direction opposite to the way I'm viewing your video. If the direction feels unnatural it probably will be more awkward to see exactly where you intend to place your needle. Im still a baby in the quilting world but a sewing person since i was 8. You never stop learning.

I love the “bat ear”method!! New to me! When I hand sew my binding, I take an extra reinforcing stitch in the quilt top every few inches for strength. Always pull your thread taut by pulling straight ahead parallel with the binding BEFORE doing the reinforcement stitch. It’s probably not critical to the process but I feel it strengthens everything!! Love that gorgeous quilt!! And thoroughly enjoy your tutorials!!

As for the corners. You can create miter corners. The way to do this is take the corner and fold the corner into the quilt at a 45 degree to the tip of the quilt. Then from there you can fold the edges in.

There are loads of tutorials on hand sewing binding down. When you take your stitches from the quilt to the binding make sure your stitches are straight. If they are on the diagonal more thread will show. I use a blind hem stitch and find it very relaxing. I’m hopeless at machine sewing both sides of the binding and struggle with wrangling the weight of the quilt so I’ve always hand sewn the second side down. Sometimes I machine sew to the back and fold over to the front. It’s great if I have points I think I might lose on the front as then I can fudge it a bit. I’ve done a similar thing with cutting the binding but I open the strip up completely. I’ve never seen it done your way but I’ll definitely give it a try. The 🎪 quilt is fabulous and the double gauze backing will be beautifully soft.

Better to be overly cautious than to ruin your project. We'll done, Tracy! But really, what's the worst that can happen if you DO cut the backing? You must then bind with the traditional binding. Quilt still done, and not in the least ruined!

Let's rethink this cutting another way. Grab yourself a piece of tailor or pencil chalk. Place the back, batting and top face up and laying flat on the cutting board. With the chalk mark the line where you want to cut on the top of the quilt. Turn the quilt to the back, ford the back as show in the video. Using a cold iron fold and iron the back. With the sewing machine use a basting the back to the back. Use 1/4, 1/2 from the edge of the back. Use a thread that is visible so you can see it on the front and back sides of the quilt. Once you have the basting stitch in place, Proceed to cut the top. Here the basting stitch thread will be used as a visual to let you know exactly where back is. and where you can cut and stay away from the back using the basting stitch as a visual with no guessing. Love your show. Blessings.

Hand stitching the binding. Start as you did going into the inside of the binding. Then go into the quilt. grab a bit and come back up. Go back into the binding a small fraction away from the first stitch. Pull the tread so that the quilt and binding are meeting tightly together. . To travel the the thread. Make a choice to the left or to the right whichever way is most comfortable to travel. Go back into the quilt near the same tacked place and travel under the quilt what ever length you want your stitches. 1/8 inch is good more or less. Then come up fro the quilt and grab a bit of the binding.. From here you have one of two choices. To travel the thread under the quilt or to travel the thread in the binding. Make a choice. and keep it consistent through out the binding process. 1 Travel from the quilt. Go in close the out stitch. travel under the quilt. Come up and grab some binding. Go back down near the stitch you came out of. 2 Travel through the binding. Come out of the binding. Grab a small stitch in the quilt. Go back into the binding close to the stitch you came out of. Then travel through the binding. A helpful tip is to use a sharpie on the needle to give you a visual on the length of stitch you want. Blessings

I usually begin at a corner, Wonder clipping the "previous" side for a couple inches, just to be sure my corner is truly square. Then I use a few more wonder clips about 4 in apart and hold the area I'm about to tack down. I do NOT clip all edges at once cause I'd be sure to knock off & lose some of the clips. This is MY way but do what works for YOU.
