I'm a fish pathologist, Outdoor & Science writer, part time river guide since 1978 and a very successful Steelhead and Salmon angler since 1973. Moreover, I used to have respect for your channel. Now I must really question your knowledge or lack thereof, after hearing you say, "Salmon rarely feed on the surface"!!! The Greatest majority of us, fish for Salmon and Steelhead, in Freshwater, not in the Ocean!! Anadromous fish, absolutely Do Not Feed after returning to their rivers of origin to spawn!! That's true for all anadromous fish of the genus Oncorhynchus and Sea Trout (Salmo trutta), plus Atlantic Salmon!!!! Wow it seems that everyone with a KZfaq channel, has now become a Self-professed expert!! I'm certain that I won't get one of those cute "social media-Hearts" from you and of course, I'm unsubscribing from your channel!!

Lol. I just read this post. I don’t usually bother with funny negative post like this but I think this is more a miss understanding of what I was meaning 😂 I get beginners coming into the shop all the time talking about salmon rising and “feeding” on the surface of a given river. You are right this does not happen. But we can get them to “Feed” eat a fly on the surface. I have caught lots of coho in rivers on wogs and poppers. It’s hard but very possible. I have also had jacks on remote systems eat dead drifted mayfly patterns. I think that any time a salmon or steelhead puts a fly or lure in its mouth they are triggered by a complicated mix of feeding / aggression instincts. In this video I was referring to the act of putting something in their mouth, weather it’s a “feeding” instinct or an aggression response. I have read a number of detailed studies on the topic and current science doesn’t come to a conclusive answer of why salmon “eat” in rivers but all of the studies look at feeding instinct and aggression instincts triggering them to eat.

what length of leader do you use with a Versa Tip. Always the same length as you use with t-6 t-9 or t-17 ?

I was in a rush at the store, and bought 6 ips sinking line. I fish the stave, which is pretty fast, and I dangle a lot. Should I run it , or go sink tip

Probably a sink tip is better.

Run the full sink.. You are at strike zone depth way longer than with tips and you can retrieve way closer in, without tips. Just work your angles accordingly, adjust to your depth and water speed with speed of retrieve and seconds betore retreive after the fly drops.. You dont mend in this technique.. Think of it almost as jiggin on a fly rod.. Allways have a pattern of retreive.. Works wayy waayyyy better than just swinging. You may hang up a little more than with a sink tip but when u get used to varying your retrieve you will get it. Just make whatever you can to be close to the bottom of the river with your presentation. About 2 ft is ideal. Best salmon flyfishing advice you ever got 😜

I am just getting started fly fishing for salmon. Are shootinghead single hand lines a good idea? How are they for swinging flies?

They are great for swinging flies. But if you are in slower water systems. Like Harrison or other side channel fisheries. they are not as good for cast and retrieve style fishing as standard single hand lines.

@@PacificAnglerTV Thanks. I watched the video and I have to say I am still a little confused. I’ve got an 8 weight single hand rod and a $100 budget for fly line. What exactly do I need to look for? Is a floating line with a sinking polyleader enough? My local fly shop recomended the SA MPX line

Do you think that a switch rod is any good for Coho fishing? Especially on the Bella Coola?

I ended up getting an SA amplitude smooth fly line from my local fly shop. (The guys actually gave me the line for free after I bought my rod, reel, and some flies) Would I be able to add sink tips to a standard floating fly line? Or should I stick to the poly leaders? In the future I hope to upgrade to a versitip line. After doing so would there be any reason to keep the integrated full floating line on hand?
