If you want Carlie on your team, always set her in your third character slot. Normally when you reach the seal, you get your second party member, and you get your third character in the prison. Carlie however always joins in the same spot, so you can exploit this fact to unlock your entire party early. That crab boss in the video? Much easier with a full party.

I've played Seiken Densetsu 3 multiple times through! My brother and I did it a few summers in a row while he was in college, which was super fun. It's a great game.

I'm coming back 10 months after watching this video and playing the game. I recently beat it, and I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT! Everything was so fun! BEST RPG EVER (In my opinion)!

Oh wow, i can't believe you did a video about this game. That's so awesome! This game has some of the most interesting concepts that I have ever seen from a jrpg, especially for its time. I didn't even think that some of these things could have been done on the snes, but lo and behold, here they are. XD

When this video came out, I was in awe of this game. For the last few years it has effected basically every purchase I’ve made in terms of rpg games. I might not have found my love for the genre if not for this video. I am so, ridiculously happy that this game was released in English officially for the first time today. I can’t wait for the full 3D version later this year either. I will be playing both, and I will be loving both. Thanks Hammy.

"Illegal." Here's some news for ya. Got the game? Got the system? Legal! Tada!

This game was my first JRPG ever. I played it with my dad when I was 4 and many many more times over the years. I obviously didn't know that it was in any way illegal. I also didn't know that there was no legal and legitimate way to buy this game in my country so I'd say it was no harm done. I love this game so much and when I heard that the were bringing it to the west AND remaking it? I cried my eyes out, I was so happy. Nobody understood why but this game is very important to me. Not only was it my first JRPG and made me fall in love with the genre. I don't have many happy memories of my dad and playing the game together is definitely one of them. I know that it probably doesn't hold up to modern standards and the remake definitely fixed some of that but I will always love the original. The characters, the combat and the replayability are so great, you can absolutely forgive the unoriginal story and the grinding. "You're the chosen hero, go save the world" was an acceptable story for RPGs when this game first came out and I won't hold that against it. The remake didn't change the story but in direct comparison it feels worse than the original. The remake is a Super Nintendo game, that plays like a PS2 game and looks like a PS4 game. That paired with the lacking story and the gameplay loop of "Getting told where to go and fighting monsters on the way there" wasn't the best of all moves. They had no reason to assume that there would be love for this game in the west and they still brought it over AND remade it. It felt like they were doing it just for me :)

I can attest from just watching the games intro. It is astounding in looks for a SNES game. Definitely obtain a copy of this one!

0:57 That is a sad common misconception. The emulator software itself is not illegal, and even emulating the games isn't illegal, it's how people generally tend to get a hold of these games. If you have the means to rip your own personal games to your computer for emulating, that is PERFECTLY LEGAL as long as you do not redistribute the files. People tend to think emulation is illegal because getting games online itself is illegal and is connected with the aformentioned redistribution... this piracy tends to be the primary method that most obtain games to play through these emulators, but are NOT the only games you can play through the software-- again, if you can rip your own games to your computer, that is covered under fair use. Downloading games off of the internet is illegal, emulation is perfectly legal. We good? We clear? Cool. High five.

I first discovered this game, and an early version of the fan translation AGES ago... Showed it to all of my friends and we all really got into it. One of them ended up writing a very comprehensive guide for GameFAQs. Needless to say when I learned about SD3, I was psyched, because SOM was one of my favorite SNES games as a kid.

I used to love this game, played a lot as a kid, it's nice to see someone finally covering it! My team was Duran-Kevin-Angela. When Angela helps you break out from Jad prison she seduces the guard by literally showing her butt to him. Also, if you make Carlie your 3rd character, she'll appear earlier than the other characters, when you're still in the caves!

Thanks, awesome vid for an awesome game! Really liked it, played it as a teen. Didn't know it wasn't adapted to English. I chose Duran as main character because of Secret of Mana in mind (Duran has a sword so he kan wield the mana sword). The game has so much replay value that every few years I still like to do a run through with different characters.

Having played both SoM and SD3, SoM still stands above it, IMO. You may have to 'wait' for the attack, but when you have all 3 characters going at once, it helps ensure your hit is actually going to, well.. Hit. The ring system is just damn fun, the music. SD3 without question has more story, and that's important. But when I'm forced to enter a combat stance, adding to the slow pace of the grind, that already feels like a grind.. I start to have problems. Have to say, all in all, well done video. First video of yours I have seen, and the comedic timing is good. More content like this and you may have a new sub! Off to look and see what you have to offer

A great JRPG series I recently got into is the Tales series after having played Tales of Vesperia on Xbox and I really wish more games were localized here. The older ones looked really great and it's such a shame many of us not in Japan can't play them. If I could get ANY JRPG localized it would be Tales of Phantasia (for being the first Tales game) and Tales of Rebirth (for looking really cool).

Really nice video, Jeff! I love the Mana series up until Sword of Mana, which is sort of a remake of the original Seiken Densetsu for the Game Boy. By the way, you should check out Legend of Mana for PSX! That game has one of the best soundtracks in video games, ever! And the combat style is quite similar to Seiken Densetsu 3. I definitely will be playing this with my brother every year. I didn't know about the class changes! Anyway, keep up the good work!

Love the game, love the review. One thing. If you're going to take Carly as your NOT main character, pick her third. You'll get character #2 in front of the blocked tunnel, and Carly where he showed her. Then you have all three before the first boss. Not super important, but it's a cool little thing.

Just finished this game. I can easily say this is one of the best RPG games I ever played. I played it many years ago without knowing Japanese (Yeah, I'm stucked because the objectives are really tricky!). But the music, the class diversity, and the story are still amazing to me.. If anyone is wondering, the game finally got an official English release on Switch, as a part of Collection of Mana. And the official English name is Trials of Mana. The remake also has the same name, Trials of Mana, and is a multiplatform title.
