Here is its almost 3 years later and this is still a solid buy. In fact, many HiFi retailers have no stock currently. Apparently the next comes in March 2022. I am picking up a demo unit from a reputed retailer. They will give me 1 year warranty from date of purchase. Can't go wrong. What attracts me to this is not only the streaming functionality with MusicCast app but also the usb drive option. Through the app you can choose from your audio library and play your personal tunes. Most of mine are FLAC. Thanks for the review. Cheers.

Yeah but at this moment, you can get a slimline Marantz NR1609 right now for the same price from Amazon. The NR1509 is $100 cheaper. Both are not as small but are slimline designs with more HDMI ports, speaker outputs, 2 zones, DV and HDR10 passthrough and possibilities for future upgrades. You could save $100 to put towards some bookshelves and get HDMI passthrough for more devices with the NR1509. If you don't mind jumping up in size, there are more and better options below the $499 price point. If the Yamaha were $299, I would say it makes sense. $500 can buy a fair amount more receiver from various brands. More output power, more flexibility, more capability, just more everything. It could also buy a fair amount of soundbar too if object based sound isn't your goal. I understand that the idea is simplicity and better sound. But for less money, I'd go two channel with the Marantz NR 1509 and pocket the savings. The same benefits (excluding size) but with more features. The pricing isn't worth the compact size. Pioneer, Marantz, and Yamaha all offer slimline receivers if size is an issue. If simplicity is your goal, a soundbar will be better at the sacrifice of sound quality. This in between product just costs too much for what it offers. I like the idea of it but the numbers just don't work out for it.

Also if you are going to pay extra for the small size factor then why would you not go with the Sonos mini amplifier? It has HDMI input. My Fire TV plugs into the back of my TV and the best way to get sound from it is HDMI arc... so without HDMI this Yamaha is not the best option.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 5 жыл бұрын
I totally understand what you’re saying. I think the Denon X2500H is a great AVR for this price range. But, there are a lot of people out there that are so use to all these device not having a screen, a small remote and not too many options. They literally stream from their TV and phone. I know many family and friends like this. Having more options just confuses them and they don’t want to bother. Since this is mainly for people connecting a TV to the optical input, HDR passthrough is not necessary as these people are streaming from their TV only. I just got an email from someone that has a Sonos 5.1 which is all wireless using the Playbar as the Maine piece, which only has optical. HDMI/ARC is just not necessary unless you want Atmos, in which case you would need an AVR or an expensive soundbar. A product like this fills a specific need for a specific person. One that wants better sound, convenience, and a headache-less install/setup.
@matthewgaines10
@matthewgaines10 5 жыл бұрын
@@TechnoDad Yep. A very specific need for a specific person. As long value isn't a consideration. I'm sure there is someone out there who may go for something like this but going up to a basic receiver or down to a soundbar is where most people will go. Even a Denon CEOL RCD-N10 can be had for $399 at this moment and provide the basic optical in, small form factor, and similar simplicity with more capabilities. I'm certain the Yamaha is a fine product. It just isn't a great value for the soundbar or basic receiver crowd. You must want to have an in between device and not want the Denon RCD-N10. Even better yet, the Klipsch R-51PM powered Bluetooth speakers get you the same functionality without buying the amplifier separately for $370. Optical in, Bluetooth, and no space needed for the amplifier at all. There are alternatives that put price, performance, and versatility pressures on the Yamaha.
@matthewgaines10

@@Joao_Humberto It's a reasonable selection if you want a 2 channel solution for your TV. If that is what you're trying to do, you could certainly do worse.

If you're running L and R channels into a sub, they usually have a adjustable crossover knob on the sub for the purpose of preventing that very issue.
@m0rish
@m0rish 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewgaines10 In a way yes, but the issue is that this only filters the high frequencies for the sub, but the other speakers will still get the full range. What you often want is for them to not get frequencies below say 100 Hz. So a configurable low-pass for the sub and high-pass for the speakers.

I don't really understand this amp. It seems to me it's better suited as a very good amplifier for PC use and small bookshelf speakers. I feel like for that money, you can get yourself a pretty decent home theatre amplifier like one of the smaller marantz. Even if you only use two speakers with it, it just seems like a better decision. I guess this thing really is for customers who want something very small because they have no space...but they have space for speakers? I don't get it.

How can this be a soundbar alternative without a HDMI input - the source that most people look for to power their soundbar? I’ve been searching for ages to find a real soundbar alternative - small, 2.1, HDMI-CEC control, good sounding, did I say small? I’ve recently found the NAD D3045, which has an HDMI input. Other alternatives include the NAD C700 (but even this is getting large and having an additional screen in the bedroom is not a great idea), or the Bluesound PowerNode. Are there any other real alternatives that I should look at. But seriously, this is not a competent soundbar alternative. Even Yamaha don’t seem to categorize it as such on their website. It’s a streaming amp…

Nice looking machine there! Love all those inputs on the back. This unit would work awesome for a secondary system in my front room. I really like how you provided a link to this unit, AND a link to speakers that would complement it. Not a bad price tag at all, for what you get. I am a Yamaha fan. I have an RX-V685, and a CD-S300, love them both.

I dont think its useful if I want to connect it to the speakers of different rooms in my house !! I think one WXA-50 can connect only to a pair of speakers. So if I want to stream a common music in my 2 or 3 rooms , I will have to buy separate WXA-50 amplifiers for each room and connect them to the speakers of each room. So my intention to play a song silultaneously all around my different rooms will not be possible with this WXA-50 amplifier.Please correct me if I am wrong.

So, would you say that the main reason to get this amp is if you need good to channel performance in a small package? One could easily pick up a pretty great surround sound receiver for $500 and use it in a two channel configuration and it would have a lot more options than this app does.
@TechnoDad

Yeah, I totally believe that. The Denon X2500H (amzn.to/2MW94qr) is great for the same price but the vast majority of people aren’t looking for more options. They want something that’s small, simple, and that works.

My primary usage is out of the home office, connected to either the computer via optical or Bluetooth via tablet/phone. I am looking at a good setup that can support hifi/flac audio for me to be able to enjoy. Do you think this is sufficient, I only need a 2.1 system since surround isn't necessary for my type of listening. Any help would be appreciated....

Having sub preout is good. Having no bass management is not good. I really dont see the point of this product other than a little space saving. If it had the functionality of an avr in small form factor for two channels then we're talking. As it is however it will flop.

If it doesn't come on automatically when input is detected via optical then unfortunately it's not a sound bar alternative. I need to provide a sound solution for my techy averse parents and they will not tolerate another remote even if it is just a damn on off switch.

How does this compare to the Sonos Amp?
@gnevos
@gnevos 5 жыл бұрын
The amp is aewsome! It gives you all the benefits of this product plus it's got hdmi Arc so you can use your regular TV remote, airplay 2, and the biggest advantage is you can add surrounds later. All in a box only about twice the size (still about a quarter the size of an avr)

Sure the hardware is good but not so the software to run it. I have had the Yamaha Musiccast system for almost a year and it's buggy and not very intuitive. Also, they don't offer Google Play Music nor KZfaq Music as a streaming service. This is insane. One of the most widely used music services in the world and it isn't included in the app. I'm a huge fan of all Yamaha products (from motorcycles, to instruments and audio) however, I am really disappointed in Musiccast.

It doesn't make sense to me. It can't run the tv and it can't run a receiver and i can buy a real receiver....i could see a unit that hooks my phone to an older system or a video from my phone to the tv and stereo for units that lack screen share or blue tooth but this is an over priced computer amp set up.

I find that two channel set of bookshelves does not really even try to replicate the true home theater experience that a $700+ sound bar does. I have tried the Klipsch Fives and they sounded great for music and good if you only care for improved sound over TV speakers but it’s an obvious 2 channel experience with no center speaker (feels like there’s a huge hole in between the speakers even with them toed in) and absolutely no surround. Good for news and certain tv shows but I’d recommend a good quality sound bar with dedicated sub and surrounds if you want more of a home theater experience

$500 and no HDMI for arc? Absolutely not the "Best soundbar alternative" I am completely interested in a small amplifier like this. Was comparing it with the Amazon and Sonos options. I am painted into a corner because Sonos is the only one with the HDMI input. This is an issue for me because I stream from a Fire TV stick which is plugged into my TV.... so I need a way to get the audio from the Fire TV to the amplifier.
@TechnoDad
@TechnoDad 5 жыл бұрын
This is for people that are connecting a TV and if there’s only two channels there isn’t a need for HDMI/ARC. You should just connect everything to the TV via hdmi and output to whatever device via hdmi or optical from the TV.
@gnevos
@gnevos 5 жыл бұрын
The Sonos option is the way to go. More power, airplay 2 , and the ability to add wireless rears. I love mine paired with some kef q150s and a cheap Dayton sub. Blows away any soundbar for $1000. I think hdmi Arc is essential. Not having to fumble around for another remote or having to buy a universal remote is fantastic.
