Penn Battle 2: amzn.to/2H9GU5h
In this video, I'm comparing a few spinning reels that I use for surf fishing on the Oregon coast. The reels are from Shimano, Penn, and Pflueger.
I recommend the Penn Battle 2 4000 for surf fishing here on the Oregon coast. It's about $100, and has the best value. I spool it with 20# braid and now becomes my go-to spinning reel for surf fishing.

*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

If you like a powerful spinning reel with high gear ratio and drag and buttery smooth when it comes to cranking you should give the Piscifun Honor XT a try. Actually, all of the Piscifun reels are great, including their new baitcaster reels. The best part is you get a reel that is usually priced at around $150-$200 if it were a Shimano for about $50! I own the Piscifun Honor XT, Carbon X, and Alloy M and they are all super light weight, poweful, buttery smooth, and have the high-geared ratio that you are looking for and they cast far and smoothly as well! You won’t find a better budget reel in the entire world than these Piscifun reels! I am very confident about that since I have used budget reels my entire life! Somebody told me Piscifun used to make reels for Japanese companies, but I haven’t heard anything officially from somebody in the know. Anyway, they are the best reel company that makes inexpensive fishing reels in my entire 40+ years of fishing! I used to feel that way about Okuma, but Piscifun has them beat in the “Best bang for the buck” department! In fact, many Americans greatly feared this company because they make awesome reels at a fraction of the price that Penn charges. The fear is that they would overtake American fishing reel companies in popularity and would put them out of business simply because Piscifun is a new Chinese fishing rod and reel company that makes quality inexpensive fishing rods and reels and some Americans irrationally feared that! However, that fear is unwarranted since there would always be a niche for Penn and other American companies just like there is a niche for a company like Piscifun that makes inexpensive fishing products for people that don’t have a lot of money to spend! The thing I like about Piscifun is the fact that people without a lot of money don’t have to settle for lesser quality products for the low prices that they spend on. That is always a plus for me since I appreciate a company that focuses on giving people the best products for the least amount of money when most companies simply try to get the most money for the products that they offer.

*Very smooth **pickoy.com/penn-1259871-fishing-reel/** Dual drags are super nice. Its the one on the right hand in photo. It does have some weight to it, but that is fine as I'm not slinging it a lot. I've only deployed for an hour so far. . . but can't wait to hook something nice with it.*

Good stuff PK, as usual. I agree with everything you said about Penn. I happened upon a really old one at a yard sale here in the Spokane area. Made in 1966. It was designed as a striper reel. Still smooth as glass. Wonderful reel. Spending a little extra money for quality is a good investment. Take care 🤠

The key to any of these low end reels is that they just don't hold up in the salt. Do your best to keep them out of the water, rinse them after use, and they'll treat you well over time. The good thing about the low end reels like the Sienna is that after a few seasons when they finally break down the $30 cost doesn't break the bank.

The PENN 3000 uses the same body as the 4000. I use for ease of care and ease of use without tangles. Wife seems to find any button or switch on a reel as a gateway to my damnation. So the Penn works fine and it does cast. I side cast 50-70 yards with the Tourny Trail and 2oz.

PK.. can't begin to tell you how helpful your videos have been for surf fishing here in So. Calif. The rigging, lures and techniques are appreciated.About reels... I've had my best luck with the Penn Battle 2, 5000 series on an 8' Penn rod combo spooled with 20 lb. Kastking Super braid. So far very dependable, solid performance. Looking to upgrade and add casting distance I just mated a Kastking 4000 Sharky iii to a 10' MH rod with a very light, fast tip and the newest Kastking 20 lb Super 9 braid. This rod is rated for 2-6 oz weight but using only a 1/2 oz swimbait this combo easily cast close to 80 yards!!! So, this could be a very versatile setup???I was wondering with your years of experience if you might try some of the new Kastking products, something a bit more affordable for us folks that struggle to justify pricier rigs??? The new 'Sharky iii' w/11 sealed salt water resistant bearings is also available in a bait caster version, both selling around $50.00. www.amazon.com/KastKing-Sharky-III-Fishing-Reel/dp/B077JY28L4/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1518455453&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=kastking+sharky+iii&psc=1 It would be interesting to see how these compare to the more expensive Penn, Daiwa and Shimano reels. Your honest opinion might be instrumental get more people on the water to share our passion for surf fishing.

I vote for a Daiwa BG or a Shimano Spheros or... I have 3 shimano saragosa reels and my oldest one is 5 years old and still smooth and I even dunked it over 20 times. Spheros or Saragosa is IMO the best reel for the money.

PK - I am thinking about getting started with surf perch fishing here where I live in Washington (Ocean Shores/Westport) and on occasion in Oregon. I am debating between buying the Penn Battle 2 3000 or the BTL2-4000 reels. Would match up with the Okuma 11 ft. CES902MHA rod. What size reel would you recommend I buy?
@oregonlife
@oregonlife 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on what line you use. I use 15# braid for surf fishing, and I use a Battle 2 4000. It has worked really nice for me, and I don't plan on switching. I put it on the same Okuma rod, but mine is a medium light (vs the medium heavy that you mentioned). Good luck

How do you maintain your reels? Are these reels specifically for saltwater environments?
@oregonlife
@oregonlife 6 жыл бұрын
Some are not. However, I've used freshwater reels for the surf without any problems. I lightly spray them down with a garden hose after each use. Shake off the excess water and store them away. I'm a believer that longevity lies with the fisherman, not the reel. Taking extra care with your equipment will ensures a longer life for the reel.

I picked up the 8' Medium power St. Croix Triumph Surf the other day, is it a good choice for shore/pier fishing? It's rated for 8-17 lB. 1/2-2 oz. Also what do you recommend as far as the reel?
