I feel like one of the main reasons Brainiac 5, at least this iteration, didn't end up like the other Brainiac clones (and, yeah, for the record Brainiac 5 is a clone, an entirely separate entity from the original who isn't even evil) is because he's the only one who allowed himself to have genuine *human* connections. Particularly with Supergirl. Their relationship started with animosity to say the least. They basically couldn't stand each other, but over time they actually got to know and respect each other , eventually becoming friends and even a couple. It took a while, it wasn't "efficient" or "logical" as the original Brainiac would have put it, but its *genuine*
