Is a waiting list justified for the 2019/2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid? Yes, absolutely. We recently crowned it the best medium-sized SUV on sale at the moment, and outside of a few minor gripes, it's an incredibly good car that provides outstanding value for money.

I hated the old Rav 4. This new one looks great and having the hybrid option available at a reasonable price is great. Toyota is finally making some great cars again.

Yes, I have to agree. I drove RAV 4s in the 90s, although they weren’t mine though. The seats were dreadful, rock hard and similar to those found on Public transportation. Long drives were back-breaking. Over the years the designs were quite dreadful, too many designers wanting their influence. Toyota held the crown of being mediocre for many years only to have it taken by Nissan and Honda. Finally the 2020 model range has shown a matured Toyota. However, why release a new model without Apple or Android CarPlay saying that it’s available later. Are there existing licensing agreements pending with Garmin or TomTom? Other vehicle manufacturers didn’t have the problem. Or was Toyota hoping to charge it as an option like they tend to do until they realised the competition includes these as standard. They still have a mean streak. I remember the many Hi Ace vans in the 1980s. The up market model came with a radio but it was only A.M. The Koreans are still ahead in loading their cars with ‘goodies’. Admittedly I have a friend who has ordered a 2020 Hybrid and I’m quite excited to know the outcome.

I love your channel and I have an important question for you - Is Australia getting the RAV4 Black Edition at all and if yes, when is it coming here? I see it is already launched in US and Europe and looks stunning. I did try and call a couple dealerships here and no one seemed to know anything about it yet. Any update on that new color scheme would help me firm up my buy

I ordered mine 6 months ago and was supposed to take delivery this week (February 2021) but delayed indefinitely. The Melbourne dealer advised that there's a global parts shortage (notably computer chips) plus the massive global demand and Toyota can't keep up. The dealer advised there's a meeting next week with Toyota Australia to discuss what they're doing about it and firm up new delivery dates.

I was talking to my local Toyota dealer in central Canada a few weeks back and the conversation came to CVT transmissions and although Toyota has not had the problems that Nissan had in there cars the CVT in the hybrid versions of Toyota's is a different design. These are planetary gear sets instead of steel belts the same found in the Prius Synergy Drive which have a very good reputation of going easily over 300 000 kilometers which is why so many Taxis at least in North America are dominated by Prius models. Not sure in Australia but in North America hybrid and electric rollout has been slow but is starting to ramp up last 5 years as people trust the technology and see the savings. I just saw a local review of the 2020 Corolla which was getting 65 mpg combined city and highway driving and is essentially a Prius with a Corolla body and as the writer put it you either love or hate the Prius styling which is barrier to entry for some even with the savings. Good real life review of the RAV4 Hybrid.

Yay! There are at least two other people in the world that understand the difference between CVT and eCVT (Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive). I wish car reviewers would do some research beyond reading the press release.
@mackman1480
@mackman1480 4 жыл бұрын
@@dingbatt Thanks for the response I have actually had a few Toyota LE Corolla's as courtesy cars when my Toyota Tundra was being repaired at the body shop with the traditional CVT and these cars are actually well equipped and once you get used to the CVT and its driving characteristics it is ok and gets good mpg's to the tune of 42 mpg for me in fun driving not ecoonomy mode. I have heard that the Toyota CVT is very reliable with minimal issues but the eCVT as you know is bulletproof with a diehard reputation and suprisengly peppy. Not an aggressive driver but I have been hit 3 times twice driving and once parked and everyone says I am sorry I didn't see you to which I reply I know it is a little truck.

RAV4 hybrid uses eCVT - no belt or chain. It is reliable. The gasoline engine is NA and works on a high-efficiency otto cycle. It should last long as well due to relatively low pressure inside the cylinder. No turbo to maintain. I am not sure it if has D4-S - if someone know please inform me ;) The battery is the part that might cause "problems" along the line. The replacement is straight forward and solves the problem. The prices of the battery are dropping and now Panasonic has a partnership with Toyota and is already providing batteries for Corrola that will be sold on the Chinese market. I wish there was a 2.5l gasoline mated with eCVT eAWD on an MPV offered in Japan. I would buy that vehicle. ;)

So based on the pre-release reviews - as we were looking for an SUV we went and had a look and had an extended drive of the RAV4 hybrid. Overall its a great step forward for toyota but the NHV in cabin wasn't that good to be 100% honest. Still had alot of road transfer noise, a noticeable amount of drivetrain noise enter in the cabin (the engine isnt exactly a geat sounding donk). When around town it was fine but anything over 80 we noticed a lot cabin noise over all. In the end we bought a Tiguan All Space and in comparison - its like driving a vault. That all said - i really enjoyed the rav4 and would still consider it as it has alot of great features that more costly SUV's have. The lane assist is a lot more aggressive in its wheel manipulation - but when you learn to work with it - i actual prefer it to the one in the Tiguan! Please tell me there is an option to turn off the voice over advising to obey all road regulations? Which is on ... all the time! School zone after school time? Bong in she chimes ..... gets old very quickly

The original RAV4 Hybrid Cruiser I purchased in May came with a severe paint defect affecting the whole car which my dealer acknowledged and immediately ordered me a new one. Now my dealer has recently told me that due to what I previously said in my original comment I cannot get a replacement until around late January. @@MrPeteJMc so what you are saying is it has regenerative charging from the brakes.. so it will still go flat over a long journey or more accurately insufficient current to be available for any combined performance benefit. "The V6 had way too much power" ?????????
@Kip78956
@Kip78956 4 жыл бұрын
Right Lane Hog I know it’s a silly comment he made, but I’ve driven my cousin’s v6 rav4 before. While not overly powerful, it is extremely responsive. Just a hair of throttle and the car takes off. It can catch anyone not used to it off guard. Those v6 ravs are definitely keepers, though I have no doubt these hybrid variants will be more than good cars

@@Kip78956 Of the current generation the Hybrid is the best. Everyone I speak with in Canada who owns a 3rd generation RAV4 V6 loves it. It is the near perfect vehicle for towing medium sized trailers yet it is easy to park and gets decent fuel mileage.

Regardless of the V6 "having too much power" the 4 cylinder definitely doesn't have enough for this application for many customers, there should be a power upgrade beyond going hybrid, what if you want to tow and are at altitude?

@@rightlanehog3151 Unfortunately V6's have and are being phased out to meet EPA fuel mileage requirements in the US. In this size of vehicle there's no doubt a V6 gives the best mix of power, mpg and longevity. Unfortunately as manufacturers are rushed to meet emissions requirements the consumer is becoming a big loser with so many manufacturers having reliability and driveability issues with the new technology. Direct injection, CVT transmissions, toyota's 8 speed transmission woes etc. are all caused by this haste. New cars that can do 200-300k miles with out major expenditure are hardly available in the current market.

...so far how far does it go on the hybrid system ??? no mention at all. and CVT... god that is the worst thing they can put into something like this.
@dingbatt
@dingbatt 4 жыл бұрын
The “Hybrid System” by definition is a combination of an internal combustion engine with electric motor/generators so the distance it will go is its fuel efficiency multiplied by its fuel tank size. In the case of the RAV4 that is 1000km+. I think what you are actually asking is how far will it go on pure electric? Less than 5km, but it’s not an EV, it’s a really efficient petrol vehicle. I do wish Toyota offered more plugin hybrids so you could drive, say, 50km on pure electric. As for the CVT, it’s not a conventional belt driven CVT, it’s an eCVT. Toyota call it a Hybrid Synergy Drive and it uses a planetary gearbox to combine an ICE with two motor/generators. The system is proprietary so you will only see it in Toyota/Lexus vehicles, although there is some talk of Toyota licensing it to other manufacturers.
@pokiou
@pokiou 4 жыл бұрын
@@dingbatt Thank you, you just explained what i wanted to know. So 5km on an internal charge, i too would like to see Toyota make a plug in hybrid with say a range of 100km. That would be ideal for city dwelling and short runs to work. But have the range of the petrol/hybrid engine that could drive to say Adelaide without having to recharge over night( exaggerating). Ideally that would be the perfect vehicle.

@@shaungranger2166 that's right, but i think on small trails the cvt might not work well as a normal automatic. I could be wrong, but that's what i'm curious about as how it would work when trying to crawl on snow something similar.

pokiou I’m in NZ and Toyota actually sell a vehicle that you describe here. Unfortunately it is a butt ugly Prius (albeit the newer slightly less ugly shape) called the “Prius Prime”. It is a PHEV with a pure electric range of 63km and has a price similar to the top model RAV4 hybrid here. When I looked on the Toyota Australia site it doesn’t feature which I find strange when Toyota essentially treats Australasia as one market. If they can do it in the Prius (Prime) then they should be doing it for the RAV4 and the Camry as well.

Wow. Took one for a test drive today a 2.0 litre and when I got back the sales man said "your back already ". These are so so so underpowered for an SUV. I give it a good rating in the way it drove but geez good luck overtaking in high speed or even taking off. That why I always buy a VW and never had an issue with reliability with them too. Also they were poorly built inside the RAV 4. The floor carpet bounced around and most of the interior wasn't built with quality. Well they're built for a certain buyer

Just test drove a 2020 Rav4 to compare to my 2019 2.4 Hyundai Santa FE SEL model.My overall review is, the Rav4 was a big loser......Buzzy as hell engine, annoying + homely dash + uncomfortable non power drivers seat + fewer standard safety features + push sport mode button and engine surges + the steering feels like a jerky go cart + the non base model has plastic HUBCAPS..... My overall review is that the Santa Fe blows it away for quality price and overall driving comfort and feel + 10 year warranty. Test drive back to back and see for yourself.. I was shocked at the big difference !!
