Best Time To Treat Bees - WHEN TO VAPE YOUR BEES WITH OXALIC ACID TO GET MAXIMUM VARROA DROP
In this video I discuss the best time to vape/sublimate your bees with Oxalic Acid or ApiBioxal!
Black Mountain Honey is a No Nonsense Beekeeping Channel.
We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

We supply F1 Mated Buckfast and Jolanta Queens throughout the season. The UK Mated Jolanta Queens are reared using genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

We are passionate about beekeeping and really enjoy helping beekeepers through our KZfaq channel.
On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.
#NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.
We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!
My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.
We aim to bridge the gap between commercial and hobbyist beekeepers and cater for beekeepers of all experience levels.

Thanks Lawrence. I'm a real advocate of multiple O/A sublimation treatments. I treat 6 times, with a 5 day gap between treatments, I administered the final treatment on new year's eve. I do a mite count on each hive 2 days after treatment. I had a mite drop of between 60/ and 83 from my 8 hives on first application. My mite count yesterday, 2 days after the final treatment was between 11 and 20 mites over my 8 hives. I treat over 30 days to ensure I've treated longer than a full brood cycle, that way, hopefully virtually all of the bees have been in contact with the chemical. In total, over all of my 8 hives, I've killed close on 800 mites. (Thanks to Kamon Renalds at Tennissees Bees), for this regime. I understand his location is an entirely different environment from ours in the UK. However, his thoughts on mite management are, I think universally sound. Until now, I've used an insect fogger using 25G of oxalic aciddisolved in 100ml of alcohol. This was easily sufficient to treat all of my hives. I couldn't justify the cost of some of the uber expensive sublimators, now, I've a Gas Vap, so that will be my administration method of choice going forward. Any comments from any U.K. bee keeper with experience of using an insect fogger as an oxalic acid treatment option. All bee keepers, please weigh in here, used Lawrence's channel as a real information hub for UK bee keepers. Yet again Lawrence, an excellent, thought provoking tutorial. Best. Stuart.

Cheers Stuart. What kind of drops did you get with the fogger? I think the general consensus is thats nowhere near as effective as sublimation. The gasvap brings the cost of sublimation right down! Repeated sublimations 5 days apart is hugely effective. We dont have the manpower to do any sort of repeated treatments.

Do you think putting construction plastic sheets under the hive will protect it from the grass growing? Is that okay? How good is it for the bees?

@@BlackMountainHoney I haven't decided yet. I'm thinking of growing so I don't want to buy something and then need to buy something else. Kinda like buy once cry once😄. Just finished my first year beekeeping with 7 hives.

I could be wrong on this but I think the oxalic acid will linger in the hive for a few days even after treatment which can kill additional mites that were under caps at the time of treatment. Do you have any thoughts on this?
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 3 жыл бұрын
Studies show there is pretty much zero impact on any capped mites. Ill see if I can find them

How do you recommend doing an oxalic acid vaporization on a poly hive without damaging the poly?

If using a Gas-Vap buy an extender pipe. Extender pipe will be cooler so not melt hive however be careful to check it for blocking between each use as this possible on occasion. Have a piece of stiff wire handy to keep pipe clear. Also wear full face visor just in case of a blow back ~ remembering you are using sublimated gas acid. Gas-Vaps work brilliantly are quick to use however must be treated with respect.

Mmm I did gasbag mine 2 times at the end of November but it’s been so warm in s/W Devon I have bees flying most days even this week so I was wondering if I should treat them a.gain or just not worry about it my hives are so strong I live and work on same site I was setting mole traps I last week and I was interrupted by A loud buzzing looked up and could see it be checking out lots of holes in fascia board for somewhere to sworn to interesting as it’s only January must’ve been from one of my hives as my hives are so strong and every time I go there and it’s warm enough they are absolutely heaving help

What are the legal legislations regards O/A? I've just bought some off amazon, 500g tub to use in my gazvap . It's not a brand name just says 99.6%oxalic dehydrate. Think it was £6.75 from bee equipment.

I've read somewhere that oxalic acid shortens the bee's life span. Any thoughts. That said I vaped my colonies on the 20 of November and 21 of December and got no varroa drop. Used gasvape. They did get Apigard in middle of August.

If it does, you need to balance it versus the destructive damage of varroa

Sublimated oxalic acid is a mild irritant to adult bees and won't harm brood. The oa dribble is what can really harm the larvae so keep that treatment at a minimum. OA vapor hardly bothers the bees. They ramp up for about 5 minutes inside the hive which only helps move the vapor around. I never see dead bees or larvae after applying OAV. Killing mites is the plan.....the mites are far far more deadly and stressful then applying oxalic acid.

Have had no problems using Gas-Vap and use it in conjunction with Varroa strips. These these are special cardboard strips used extensively by NZ bee keepers and are very effective in keeping mite levels extremely low throughout year. The bonus of course being lower amount of disease and viruses. 40% Oxalic acid powder is mixed with 60% glycerine and heated to no more than 60 degrees (If this happens it changes to Formic acid) Once oxalic and glycerine becomes clear it is poured into container for 24 hours to soak up solution. Strips can then be stored in sealed container and have shelf life for one year. Look up KZfaq videos for further accurate info. Some beekeepers make a mix of 50/50 claiming over 97% effectiveness. Question is why risk build up at all and spreading of disease when you can have permenant all year round solution? In NZ strips are used with supers. Because oxalic acid is organic and naturally occuring in many plants, scientific test have shown it to not be in sampled honey. In USA after iitially being about to give approval for use, I believe the main bee keeping association backed down. Likely because of badgering from other chemical manufacturers worried about losing their profits. When organic products work and are safe and inexpensive, chemical manufacturers will always loathe competition and take any measures possible however how distasteful to keep lining their dirty greedy pockets...
